Situated in the central part of Switzerland in the canton of Uri, International School Altdorf welcomes international students from all over the world. With nature just around the corner, our school is surrounded by the stunning Swiss Alps and the beautiful Lake Lucerne. Our school offers the internationally recognized IGCSE, IBDP and University Preparation programs as well as a summer program and classes to prepare for IELTS, TOEFL and SAT exams that our students can take at the certified test centre on our campus. International School Altdorf is also pleased to offer scholarships to highly capable students who meet strict academic requirements and demonstrate their future potential. With a strong focus on academics, our students also participate in the European Physics Olympiads and the World Olympic Mathematic Competition. Through outside collaborations with pharmaceutical companies and attending UNWTO meetings, our students also get the chance to apply their academic experience outside of the classrooms.

The GCSE programme and its international counterpart IGCSE is recognized worldwide, in more than 40 countries, so it will be a suitable choice for international students.

The course is taught in English.

A balanced curriculum will help to create a strong foundation of knowledge on the basic school curriculum and prepare for graduating classes:

IB Diploma Program

  • 16-19 years.

The IB Diploma International Reference Course is the final stage of the unified IB (International Baccalaureate) program, which is most often chosen by students around the world. The IB diploma is valued all over the world, so it does not limit you in choosing a country and university for higher education.

3 subjects are studied at the basic level of complexity(SL,150 academic hours), another 3 - at the in-depth(HL,240 academic hours; as a rule, these are the directions that the student will choose at the university). Subjects are divided into 6 thematic groups - you need to choose 1 option from five + 1 additionally (from any group).

  1. Languages and Literature: English Language and Literature, Chinese Language and Literature, Literature of China.
  2. Language courses: English, German, French, Spanish; Spanish, French and German courses for beginners (SL only)
  3. Personality and Society: Economics, Business and Management, History, Psychology, Philosophy (SL), Internet Technologies in the Global Community (SL), Environment and Society (SL)
  4. Experimental Sciences: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Environment and Society (SL)
  5. Mathematics: Mathematics - Analysis and Approaches (HL), Mathematics - Applications and Interpretation
  6. Art: Visual Arts, Cinema (SL).

Exams are taken at the end of the second year of study, the maximum score is 45: the diploma is awarded with a result of 24 points, 38 points or more open the door to the most prestigious universities in the world.

Additional elements of the program, for which credit points are also awarded:

  1. Theory of Knowledge (TOK)
  2. Extended Essay (EE) – from 4000 words
  3. CAS: Creativity, Activity, Service.

Accommodation, meals, prices

The school offers full-time education and boarding (from the age of 13, including flexible). Most students choose to stay at the boarding house: comfortable conditions, support of senior staff and a company of new friends help to overcome homesickness, quickly join a new atmosphere, become independent.

Students live in 2-3-bed rooms with a private bathroom. Three meals a day are offered every day (including weekends), it is possible to order a diet menu if necessary.

Activities Altdorf International School Switzerland

Extracurricular activities are an important part of our student’s education and personal development and we encourage students to actively participate and challenge themselves outside of the classroom. The school has it´s own animal shelter, which is entirely maintained by our own students. We´ve got many clubs to choose from and to name a few dance science and technology, debate, cooking classes, poetry, business, newsletter and astronomy.

With a strong focus on academics, our students also participate in the European Physics Olympiads and the World Olympic Mathematics Competition. Through outside collaborations with pharmaceutical companies and attending UNWTO meetings, our students also get the chance to apply their academic experience outside of the classrooms. The school offers sports on campus; Basket ball, Tennis, Volleyball, Football, Swimming, Badminton and Table Tennis. Excursions and events are held several times per year both in Switzerland and abroad.
