Tonbridge School is an institution with a long history, which organizes English language programs for children from 8 to 17 years old in the summer.

The school, opened in 1553, is located in the heart of the trading town of Tonbridge, England. Foundation Global Young Leaders is a program based on debate, argumentation skills, and global problem solving. The course has been running for more than a decade with unflagging success.

The introduction to the debate is an important part of the program, which aims to:

  • Developing competitive debating skills,
  • Increased confidence in academic spoken English,
  • Participation in the debate competition in the format of World Schools Debating,

Classes are structured to encourage collaboration, mutual support, and positive relationships between students. Lessons are conducted in small classes, so an experienced teacher can always help each pupil.

Lessons in the important sciences of our time introduce students to a number of key ideas in philosophy, politics, and economics. Topics cover a wide range of social science ideas: world history, geography, history of science, world religions, sociology, and law. The interdisciplinary approach gives students an understanding of the world around them, the logic of the actions of its representatives and possible solutions to problems.

The weekly academic load is:

  • 15 hours of seminars in philosophy, politics and economics,
  • 7.5 hours of debate and public speaking classes,
  • 7.5 hours of sports.

Future Young Leaders and Intensive English

The course, which combines the study of the English language with the basics of politics, economics, and philosophy, is an introduction to debate and the history of ideas that have shaped the world as we know it today. Experienced teachers teach small class lessons on a range of topics designed to help students become more informed and engaged global citizens.

The program has three main areas of study.

  1. The first of these is the development of English language skills through debates, which help to gain confidence in spoken English, participate in public speaking and discussions with students from all over the world, acquire valuable skills in negotiation, argumentation, analysis. This aspect of the program culminates in the participation of students in a debate competition in the World Schools Debating format.
  2. Introduction to Philosophy, Politics, and Economics is the second fundamental component of the course. The combination of these sciences helps students develop their understanding of the world around them, see interdisciplinary approaches, and solve problems based on the experience of global issues that have already been resolved.
  3. Intensive English is the third aspect, thanks to which students will improve their reading, grammar, writing, speaking and listening skills, and enrich their vocabulary. Through lessons taught in small classes by qualified native-speaking teachers, students will develop a deeper linguistic understanding of the topics discussed.

Students' weekly schedules include:

  • 7.5 hours of Intensive English,
  • 7.5 hours of debate and public speaking classes,
  • 7.5 hours of seminars on philosophy, politics and economics,
  • 7.5 hours of sports.

English plus Sport and Activity

  • Age — from 8 to 17 years old,
  • Language level – any,
  • The duration of the training is 2 or 4 weeks.

The program combines English classes with an extensive program of sports and leisure activities.

Language lessons are designed to build confidence in speaking, develop reading and writing skills, grammar and vocabulary knowledge through communication in English, teaching in small groups of up to 15 people. Classes consist of three hours of study time per day, five days a week. All English teachers are qualified, and the courses are accredited by the British Council to teach the language in the UK. 

In addition to General English classes, all students participate in a wide range of activities designed to give them the opportunity to develop new skills while using spoken English in a specific context. Students move on to a new activity every day, including journalism, creative writing, mindfulness workshops, vlogging, cooking, drama, arts and crafts. Classes last 90 minutes and are aimed at developing speaking and listening skills.  

Every day, pupils are offered a fantastic combination of sports! They can practice their skills or take the opportunity to learn new ones in sports such as football, table tennis, tennis, athletics, swimming, and others. In addition to these aspects, the program includes two full-day excursions organized to London and nearby cities.

The academic load includes weekly:

English plus Performing Arts

Course English plus Performing Arts offers boys and girls from 8 to 17 years old the opportunity to develop their theatrical skills in drama and dance, improve their level of English under the guidance of qualified teachers. English is studied in the morning, and classes per week include 15 hours of reading, writing, and speaking skills. In small groups of up to 15 people, teachers give individual attention to each of them, making intensive progress together. Afternoon classes focus on developing skills in acting, singing, dancing, and performing arts, culminating in a performance in front of other students and staff at the end of the program. One of the highlights of the course is attending a London music show at the West End Theatre. 

The weekly schedule of the program includes:

  • 15 hours of General English lessons,
  • 15 hours of art classes,
  • A varied social program,
  • Two full-day excursions to London and beyond.

Global Young Leaders

Summer Program Now in its 17th year, Global Young Leaders is a leading debate and critical thinking course that exposes students to some of the world's most influential global issues.

The program is based on two aspects: debate and critical thinking skills. In 2-4 weeks of training, students will develop skills in competitive debate and analysis, gain self-confidence and take part in public speaking. In critical thinking classes, they will learn about various global issues, learn how to think critically and reason.

The weekly workload includes:

  • 15 hours of debate classes,
  • 15 hours of seminars in philosophy, politics and economics.

Accommodation, meals, prices

Three residences, which house summer course students, are located next to the school campus; They have separate accommodation for boys and girls, who can socialize in the rest areas, but cannot enter the residential units of the opposite sex.  There are several types of rooms for accommodation: single, double, triple and quadruple. Common bedrooms accommodate children who are close to each other in age, but different in nationality. The bedrooms in the rooms have a shared bathroom.

The residences are also home to employees who provide safety, comfort and comprehensive round-the-clock support for pupils.

Each student is provided with three meals a day, prepared from fresh vegetables, meat, and cereals. The menu meets all the standards of a healthy diet, is regularly updated, offering a wide range of delicious and healthy dishes.

Activities Tonbridge School Summer Camp

After a full day of English lessons, electives and sports in the evenings, students enjoy a lively programme of social activities. Every week there are discos, barbecues, sports competitions, intellectual games and other entertainment aimed at uniting the student team.  Pupils have free time, which can be spent in the boarding house, recreation rooms and computer classes, relax on a vast territory. 

Thanks to the modern sports infrastructure of the campus, students can try their hand at different sports:

A weekly trip to London offers students a wide range of opportunities that combine cultural, historical attractions with shopping and entertainment.

  • Brighton always serves as a popular destination to visit, combining the atmosphere of a typical English seaside resort with the historical interest of the opulent Royal Pavilion, the arts and crafts shops in the narrow streets.
  • The ancient university city of Oxford offers another memorable excursion, including visits to colleges, boat rides on the river. Cambridge is best known as the home of the University of Cambridge, founded in 1209 and consistently ranked among the top five universities in the world. Students will be inspired by the many beautiful museums and art galleries, admire the architecture and majestic college buildings, and explore the quaint streets that surround historic markets and colleges. 
  • Chessington World of Adventures offers an exciting day at one of the UK's most beloved amusement parks, and Whipsnade Zoo, the largest in the country, is home to more than 3,500 animals from around the world, allowing you to see species that are not represented in most zoos around the world.

Facilities and equipment at Tonbridge School Summer Camp

The world-famous Tonbridge School is located in the heart of the historic shopping city, on a spacious, green 150-acre campus. The buildings of the institution are of great architectural importance, especially the magnificent chapel, founded in 1553. Many modern buildings have also been built on the grounds, such as a swimming pool, a sports center, a media center, and a theater. A dedicated block of classrooms with interactive whiteboards, wireless Internet access is the main place of learning, so it meets all the standards of modern education.

Near the school campus there are three comfortable boarding houses.

The city of Tonbridge attracts many international visitors, offering them a wide range of shops and amenities, and the train station offers easy access to London, which is less than 45 minutes' drive away. In the center of the town, next to the school, there is a well-preserved 13th-century castle surrounded by beautiful gardens.
