Education information

Austria is one of the most attractive countries in Europe where foreign students can get high-quality education. Austrian educational institutions are annually included in the ranking lists of leading schools, colleges and universities in Europe, which offer their students a secondary and higher education of the highest level. That's why several thousand foreign students from different countries come to Austria every year.

And of course, if you really go to Austria, it is better to go to the capital of this country - the magnificent Vienna. This city has repeatedly been recognized as the best among other capitals of the world in terms of such factors as the level and comfort of living and the architectural beauty of the city. In addition, Vienna has for many years already been an honorary status of the political and cultural center of Europe. And there really is something to see, from medieval castles, palaces and fortresses to more modern buildings and places: the Schönbrunn Palace, the Vienna Opera, the St. Stephen's Cathedral, the Museum of Art History, the Danube Tower and many others.

Austria's educational system, mirroring Germany's, comprises primary, secondary, and higher education. For local students, secondary education is free, offering choices between vocational training (Hauptschule) or academic-focused Gymnasium, the latter preparing students for university admission.

International students typically attend fee-based boarding schools in Austria, where they receive intensive foreign language training. These schools offer varied curricula, including Austrian, British, American, and International Baccalaureate (IB) programs, providing flexibility for students' future educational pursuits.

Benefits of Austrian Private Secondary Schools

  • Supervised Boarding: Minors reside in boarding houses under constant supervision.

  • Multicultural Exposure: Students thrive in a multicultural setting, fostering broad personal development.

  • Direct University Access: Graduates can directly apply to universities abroad, bypassing preparatory courses often required for other international students.

Paul McLean
Director of AIS-Salzburg since 1995

Paul is the Headmaster at The American International School in Saizburg. Paul became the Director of AIS-Salzburg in 1995, however he has been working in secondary education since 1983 when he started his teaching career in Colorado, USA. He was a sports coach for about 6 years and then moved to Austria, where he was already a teacher and administrator in Salzburg and Innsbruck (since 1989). In Paul's opinion, security level, stability (starting from the national level, social and political organizations), and strong social norms that allow children to live and learn in peace are the most important features to consider when choosing a school.
