Ulrike Weil

PA to Head of School at St Gilgen International School

How long have you been working in the field of secondary education?

I've been in secondary education since 2008, coinciding with the opening of St Gilgen International School.

What makes Austrian schools stand out? Why do parents from around the world highly value primary and secondary education in Austria?

St Gilgen International School, nestled in the picturesque city of St. Gilgen by Lake Wolfgang and at the base of the Austrian Alps, epitomizes the allure of Austrian schools. Our prime location, just a stone's throw from Salzburg and easily accessible to Vienna and Munich, offers the perfect blend of serene countryside and vibrant city life. This setting creates an ideal learning environment for students.

What factors do parents consider when choosing a school in Austria?

With a student body of about 210 and a 5:1 student-to-teacher ratio, we pride ourselves on our comprehensive pastoral care and personalized attention. Our commitment to helping each child discover and develop their talents is central to our philosophy of 'path to excellence,' which focuses on exceptional care, high-quality education, and unique opportunities. We are dedicated to preparing students thoroughly to achieve their utmost potential without compromise.

When is the optimal time to apply to Austrian schools, and what should applicants expect?

Applications are generally welcomed year-round, but we recommend applying by May for a September start. After receiving an application, we arrange a trial day, including a campus tour, a meeting with the head of the school, English and math assessments, participation in classes, and potentially an overnight stay in the boarding facilities if campus accommodation is sought.

Which subjects have gained popularity among students recently?

Recently, the most popular subjects include:

  • English Language and Literature

  • German Language and Literature

  • Economics

  • Biology.

Additionally, subjects like lower-level English and German, geography, history, chemistry, physics, and fine arts are also gaining traction.

How challenging is it to obtain a scholarship for talented students? What kind of financial aid is typically available?

Most scholarships we offer are partial. Full tuition coverage is reserved for exceptionally talented students with significant potential.

At what age do international students commonly enroll in Austrian schools?

Students typically enroll from the 7th grade onwards, with the majority joining in grades 9 to 11.

Do all schools in Austria offer ESL courses for international students? How important are these courses?

At St Gilgen International School, we offer what we call EAL (English as an Additional Language) to all our international students. The intensity of EAL support varies based on the student's age and proficiency level. Proficiency in English is crucial, as our entire curriculum is taught in English, and students struggling with the language may find it challenging to keep up.

We recommend prospective students work on improving their English skills before enrolling.

What additional expenses should parents anticipate beyond tuition and boarding fees?

Parents should budget approximately 2000 euros for additional costs, including uniforms, a registration fee, and mandatory insurance. A personal laptop is necessary, along with some pocket money for personal expenses.

Beyond teacher qualifications, what do parents consider when choosing a school?

Our school's ethos is to treat the world as a classroom. We offer over 40 outdoor sports and cultural activities under professional supervision. Our students enjoy guided hiking in Mont Blanc, horseback riding, basketball with a former NBA player, and a variety of seasonal sports like water skiing, skiing, and rock climbing.

Artistic pursuits are also encouraged, with options in theater, dance, and music. Our partnership with the Mozarteum in Salzburg provides exceptional opportunities for music education. Being in St. Gilgen, with its connection to Mozart, means students are immersed in a world of inspiration.

What advice would you offer to potential students before joining an Austrian school?

We encourage you to visit us for a trial day. It's the best way to experience firsthand the opportunities and environment at one of Austria's top schools, especially here at St Gilgen International School.
