Wuppertal Research University offers students a wide range of sought-after programs, some of which are unique and are no longer offered at any German university.

It is located in Wuppertal, in the heart of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is a member of an international association of over 220 partner universities around the world, most of which are located in Asia, North, Central and South America. Despite its powerful international connections, it enjoys an established reputation as a local university, which, thanks to the establishment of close ties with many public and business organizations in the region, managed to form a solid regional network aimed at realizing the goals of the university and strengthening the position of graduates.

It was founded in 1972 as part of a land initiative aimed at creating a universal higher education sector. A number of existing local higher schools, including engineering, industrial design and education, were reorganized and strengthened by new faculties. The initiator of the creation of the university, called the "Comprehensive University of Wuppertal", was the future President of Germany Johannes Rau. In 2003, the university received its current name.

Traditionally, the university pays high attention to engineering and natural science disciplines, art history and design, pedagogy, but the economic and humanitarian departments also enjoy well-deserved fame.

Faculties and colleges

Organizationally it consists of 8 faculties:

and a pedagogical school – an inter-faculty institution of a universal nature.

  • Early Modern Age Research Center (FFN);
  • Interdisciplinary Center for Science and Technology Studies;
  • Interdisciplinary Center for Applied Informatics and Scientific Computing;
  • Interdisciplinary process control center;
  • Wuppertal Center for Intelligent Materials and Systems;
  • Interdisciplinary Center for Machine Learning and Data Analysis;
  • Jackstedt Center for Interdisciplinary Entrepreneurship and Innovation Studies;
  • Interdisciplinary Center for the Study of Publications and Documents;
  • Center for Narrative Research;
  • Center for Interdisciplinary Language Studies (ZefiS);
  • Center for Childhood Research;
  • Center for Pure and Applied Mass Spectrometry;
  • Center for Transformational Studies and Sustainable Development (TransZent).

As well as the Competence Center for Health Management, the Biblical Archaeological Institute, the Institute of Occupational Medicine, Safety and Ergonomics (ASER) and the Martin Heidegger Institute – the first in the German-speaking world dedicated to the work and heritage of this German philosopher.

Scientific achievements

  • The amount of third-party funding attracted by the university in 2021/2022 is 47 million euros;
  • The university serves as the base for two of the world's most powerful computing centers, Pleiades and QPACE.

In the 2020/2021 academic year, the university had 509 project groups, divided into four areas:

  1. Humanities and Social Sciences: 119
  2. Technical sciences: 149
  3. Natural sciences: 183
  4. Other: 35.

These projects are funded at land, national or European level. There are international research programmes operating on the basis of international and intergovernmental agreements.

Things to know about

Unlike classical German universities, the University of Wuppertal does not have faculties of law and medicine.

In 1975, the University of Wuppertal introduced a course in safety engineering. No other university in Germany offers courses of this orientation. Within the framework of the program, students are taught special knowledge in the field of fire safety, labor protection, the environment and quality assurance.

Other unique courses are bachelor of arts in media/technology, master of industrial and organizational psychology, master in sustainability management.

The university has established close cooperation with the Youth University of Wuppertal, founded in 2008, offering a number of unique courses for children and young people.

Accommodation, meals, prices

The university provides a dormitory: 1100 beds are available in 16 buildings located in several locations of varying degrees of distance from the campuses of the university. It is one of the largest networks of mixed hostels in Germany, winning a number of awards for comfort of living and energy balance. Many residential premises are architectural monuments of regional and national importance.

The three campuses have three canteens and 5 cafeterias, the level of work of each of them corresponds to the highest levels of consumer protection in Europe.

Facilities and equipment at University of Wuppertal — Bergische Universität Wuppertal

The university has three campuses:

  • Griffenberg Campus

Located in Elberfeld and is a honeycomb building made of reinforced concrete, designed according to a modular system connected by wide corridors. Most of the faculties and administrative premises, the lion's share of library collections are located here. Here are the faculties of humanities and cultural studies, humanities and social sciences, economics, mathematics and natural sciences, mechanical engineering and security technologies, design and art. Lecture halls accommodate 4200 students. There is also the largest student canteen at the university and 5 specialized specialized libraries.

  • Freudenberg Campus

It has been in use since 1999. The building was built in 1930 as a barracks for the Wehrmacht, used by the army until 1993. The buildings are used as lecture halls, laboratories, as sites for the placement of research centers and subsidiary institutes of the university. The campus housed the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Information Technology and Media Technology, the Faculty Library, 6 lecture halls for 760 people and a dining room.

  • Haspel Campus

The most modest campus is located in the western Bartender. It occupies the building of the construction school opened here in 1900, built in 1897 - the forerunner of the corresponding faculty, annexed in 1972 to the new university and a number of other buildings. The nearby Paulskirche is used for events.

The university library has existed since its foundation and offers one and a half million books, 1900 subscription periodicals, access to dozens of full-text databases, as well as at least 20 thousand journals in electronic form. The library's collection also contains personal collections of philologists Jachman and Puelma, the Franz Kafka Library and a collection of CDs by Ulrik Schreiber. Since 2002, the University of Wuppertal Archives has also been operating, where university documents and private funds related to the university are accumulated. Access is open, by letter-attitude.

The university also has a uni Bergische Universität stadium with 4100 seats, and a sports center offering more than 90 sports. In total, students have access to 18 sports facilities on campuses and with partners. Among them are a hockey field, golf courses, climbing walls and gyms.

In addition, the university has its own kindergarten for children from six months to six years old, designed for children of students and teachers; it currently has 38 pupils.

Special mention should be made of the laboratory of historical television: the museum of the history of TV, exhibiting old televisions, film and studio equipment, as well as a number of local attractions - the sculpture "Start" and the Foucault pendulum installed at the entrance to the main administrative building, a number of samples of wall painting - mosaic panels and murals by Billy Baymeiter.

Enrolment process

After passing the exams, in case of an affirmative decision, the student receives an offer of admission to one or more programs. It is necessary to make a decision and choose a program, otherwise the applicant can be enrolled automatically, after which all alternative offers will be canceled without the possibility of recovery.

It is important to keep the admission notice: once the enrollment campaign is complete, it will be permanently deleted. After that, you must register on the university's website, print out the application form and send it by mail or personally submit it along with other documents no later than September 1 of the current year.

  • foreign documents on education (certificate, diploma);
  • foreign educational documents officially recognized by the district authorities (Bezirksregierung Düsseldorf);
