The unification of the universities of Duisburg and Essen in 2003 allowed the founding of the state higher education institution University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE). The university is the youngest university in Germany, but already occupies 34th place in the national ranking and is one of the most prestigious educational institutions. The University of Duisburg-Essen implements more than 230 programs for students from more than 130 countries, is a member of the International Research Universities Network (IRUN) and the European University Association (EUA).
