University of Nicosia Medical School is a part of the University of Nicosia (UNIC), the largest higher education institution in Southern Europe. The University of Nicosia annually educates around 12,500 students from more than 100 countries, offering programs in various specializations in English. It has campuses in Nicosia and 18 other cities worldwide.

For the past two decades, UNIC has been a leader in developing programs in the life and health sciences in Cyprus. The Medical School was established in 2011, offering students a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) program in affiliation with St George's, University of London.

Today, the UNIC Medical School is the largest in the country and provides three undergraduate programs and four postgraduate degrees. In addition to academic achievements and research skills, students benefit from world-class faculty who are experienced and passionate about their work. Degree in Medicine for High School Leavers

  • Age - from 18 years,
  • The term of study is six years.

The six-year MD degree program is designed for graduates who have graduated from high school. It consists of six stages-years, in which students will study specialized disciplines and practice.

  1. During the first three years, students will gain knowledge in basic medical sciences, including general and organic chemistry, biology, anatomy, microbiology and virology, medical genetics and others. They will also take an integrated clinical practice course where they will be able to develop important communication and diagnostic skills. Under supervision, students will be able to meet selected patients from local hospitals and clinics to practice basic care and diagnostic skills.
  2. The fourth year of study is devoted to complex research - the transition from preclinical to clinical. Students will take courses in hematology, systematic pharmacology, epidemiology, and public health + create a research project. The clinical practice will begin in the second semester and will consist of visits to local hospitals to acquire communication and clinical skills, internships in surgery and primary care.
  3. In the fifth and sixth years, students will have to gain extensive experience in the clinical environment - hospitals, communities, private clinics. They will work together with existing doctors, applying all previously acquired skills and knowledge. Senior students are also offered the opportunity to participate in an optional internship abroad.

Medical Program St. George's University of London & Medical School UNIC, Medical Program of St. George's University of London and University of Nicosia School of Medicine

  • The term of study is four years.

In partnership with St. George's University of London, UNIC Medical School presents the Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) program. Within four years, students will receive knowledge and a diploma from the University of London, giving them the opportunity to enroll in postgraduate studies in the UK.

In the first year of study, students will have to explore specialized disciplines, and from the second year they will move on to clinical practice. The curriculum is based on four main themes:

  • "The Patient and the Doctor",
  • "Public and public health",
  • "Personal and professional development",
  • "Life cycle".

Students will gain valuable knowledge in medical fields such as immunology, oncology, pediatrics, gastroenterology, orthopedics, neurology, and others. Such a wide variety will allow students to accurately choose the future path in their medical career.

Students also have a choice in the place of study: the campuses of the University of London or the University of Nicosia. When attending classes at one of them, the internship is supposed to be on the other.

Master's Programs

The UNIC Medical School offers three master's degree programs, each of which contains three semesters of studying specialized disciplines and clinical practice:

  • Public Health,
  • Family medicine,
  • Health Services Management.

Within a year and a half of study, students will gain competitive skills and knowledge in their chosen field, setting a quick start for their career path.

Graduate Entry – Doctor of Medicine Degree, Postgraduate Admission – Doctor of Medicine

  • Age - from 21 years,
  • The term of study is five years.

The postgraduate program is suitable for those students who already have any higher education diplomas: bachelor's or master's degrees.

The curriculum of the program is innovative and is based on modern international achievements in the field of medical education. Students will receive not only high-quality knowledge, but also career guidance services, training in small groups, and the opportunity to use technological innovations.

  1. In the first three years, the emphasis is on specialized disciplines: histology, pharmacology, biochemistry, molecular biology and genetics, as well as discussion and analysis of cases - real clinical cases.
  2. In the fourth and fifth years, training takes place in a clinical environment - students visit medical institutions to practice clinical and communication skills.

Doctoral Degree

  • Age - from 23 years,
  • The term of study is from three years.

The University of Nicosia School of Medicine offers the Doctor of Medical Sciences degree to students who have successfully completed an independent research program. The stage will allow students to become independent researchers, contributing to innovation and the development of international medicine. After completing their doctorate, graduates will consolidate abilities that will enable them to conduct and lead research projects, innovate, and push the boundaries of science. 

You can study under the doctoral program for at least three years. Over the years, students will receive:

  • In-depth study of their chosen topic,
  • Ability to be creative in research,
  • Developing skills that will allow them to critically examine existing literature in their specific field of study,
  • Development of skills in the development and testing of hypotheses,
  • The skill of developing new theories,
  • Ability to plan and conduct experiments,
  • Development of professionalism and networking skills.

Accommodation, meals, prices

Students at the Medical School are provided with accommodation in University of Nicosia residences, which offer various levels of comfort:

  1. SIX: This complex consists of six buildings with a total of 314 rooms that can accommodate up to three people. The complex features a coffee shop and a minimarket.

  2. TRIANGLE: This residence offers 147 spacious rooms and includes restaurants, cafes, bars, and supermarkets.

Both the SIX and TRIANGLE residences are situated in a highly desirable area of Nicosia, within walking or cycling distance of the medical school, university campus buildings, and other amenities.

  1. U: U is a state-of-the-art residential building with 399 rooms spread across seven floors. Single studios come equipped with amenities such as a bathroom, kitchenette, and private balconies. One-bedroom apartments are also available for student friends or couples. This complex is conveniently located within walking distance of educational buildings.

The UNIC campus provides students with a wide range of dining options, including restaurants and cafeterias that offer a diverse menu. Students can enjoy hot lunches, snacks, drinks, sweets, and cuisine from different nations. Additionally, popular catering chains like McDonald's, Starbucks, and KFC are located near the campus for students' convenience.

Activities University of Nicosia Medical School

UNIC sponsors and organizes many lectures, symposia, conferences and entertainment events annually, promotes the work of student clubs. On campus there is a wide variety of infrastructure for leisure and development of students' interests: from an open-air amphitheater, a cinema and sports grounds to art studios, game rooms and recreation areas. All medical students become members of the Medical Society.

Student clubs are interest groups created to entertain, benefit and enrich students, encouraging their personal development. The activities of the current clubs include community service, sports, health and cultural interests. Students usually create clubs themselves in social, ethnic, academic, sports, art or other areas, gathering like-minded people and organizing thematic events, for example:

Facilities and equipment at University of Nicosia Medical School

The medical school's classrooms are located on the UNIC campus. State-of-the-art facilities equipped with the latest technology, including an anatomical center and clinical skills laboratories, allow students to gain applied experience and knowledge that meet the demands of a rapidly changing world. Students also have access to the following academic centers:

  • Laboratories of General Anatomy, Human Qualities, Nutrition, Microbiology and Molecular Biology, Physiotherapy,
  • Histology & Histopathology Resources,
  • Anatomical center with practical materials, a large collection of anatomical models and bones. It is equipped with video projector screens, a sound system, a repository of useful teaching aids such as anatomical atlases and anatomy manuals,
  • Health Library, which presents publications on basic sciences and clinical medicine. The library provides electronic access to an extensive collection of medical databases, e-books and journals.

During clinical skills classes, students work with realistic models and mannequins, with "simulated" and real patients, develop methods of communication with patients that will expand abilities and clinical knowledge.

The academic year consists of two semesters, culminating in verification exams. Students attend classes on weekdays, and rest on weekends, days of international and national holidays, vacations.

Candidates need to fill out an online application and provide the documents required by the program, pay registration fees. The admissions committee comprehensively reviews applicants' applications and informs about further stages of registration: visa documents, online or campus interviews, and attending orientation events.

Entry requirements, how to apply, what is required to enrol

The institution offers education at two levels of higher education: Master's and Doctorate.

To be eligible for Master's programs, international applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. A bachelor's degree with an above-average overall grade.
  2. A certificate demonstrating English language proficiency: IELTS (score of 6.5 or higher), TOEFL iBT (score of 79 or higher), or an equivalent.
  3. Evidence of current registration with a medical council.
  4. Confirmation of participation in clinical practice.
  5. Two recommendation letters from academic advisors or employers.
  6. A personal statement describing work experience, goals, and research interests.
  7. Personal documents: passport, medical insurance, visa, or residence permit.

For the six-year Doctor of Medicine degree, prospective students must provide the following documents:

  1. A high school diploma with an overall grade of 90%, and a score certificate for subjects such as biology, chemistry, physics, and others.
  2. A certificate demonstrating English language proficiency: IELTS (score of 6.5 or higher), TOEFL iBT (score of 79 or higher), or an equivalent.
  3. Personal documents: passport, medical insurance, visa, or residence permit.

Candidates for the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree should submit:

  1. Bachelor's and Master's degree diplomas or Doctor of Medicine degree.
  2. Copies of transcripts from all previously attended institutions.
  3. A certificate demonstrating English language proficiency: IELTS (score of 7 or higher), TOEFL iBT (score of 94 or higher), or an equivalent.
  4. Two recommendation letters, with at least one from an academician.
  5. A curriculum vitae (CV).
  6. A research proposal and statement of its necessity, including a literature list and methodology, limited to a maximum of five pages.
  7. Personal documents: passport, medical insurance, visa, or residence permit.

Scholarships University of Nicosia Medical School

UNIC provides its students with a wide range of scholarships and funding opportunities: from material support in special cases to scholarships for academic merit.

The medical school awards scholarships of up to 20% based on the needs of the students. Students from some countries can also apply for financial support from their country's government.
