Description of St Davids College

  • Location: Llandudno, county of Conwy
  • Educational programs: KS3, GCSE, A-Level
  • Students age: 9 to 18 years
  • Type of tuition: boarding house and day form
  • Type of studying: mixed
  • Total number of students: 200.

St. David's College was established in 1965 by John Mager and today accepts children from 11 to 18 years for studying. The total number of students reaches 245 people: 176 boys and 68 girls (of which 115 are at boarding house).

St. David's College was created as a comfortable place to teach children with developmental features, with slower maturation and learning problems. The founder of the school was convinced that in ordinary schools such children do not receive the proper amount of attention and care, and founded a school in which everyone can feel special attention, warmth and support. John Mager became practically a pioneer in teaching children with slow development, he proved that this is not a disease, but only a psychological feature, and such students can also be successful students.

A personal curriculum is created for each student, which takes into account all its features, unique requests and possibilities. The school pursues a policy of simple admission, and about half of the children have the status of "difficult to learn" - despite this, the teachers manage to achieve impressive academic progress. According to statistics, graduates annually demonstrate excellent academic results:

  • GCSE - more than 80% pass on the grades from A* to C
  • A-level - 30% of the students receive the highest A* and A scores

Small classes, up to 10 people each, and a large number of individual lessons contribute to the success, which are available to all students who require a more careful and consistent explanation of the educational material that did not have time to learn the information in the main lesson.

The independent edition of The Good Schools Guide notes: "This is really a special school and a magical place where children are surrounded by care, love, and teachers are ready to fulfill their cherished dreams." St. David's College is loyal to all religious denominations, beliefs and religions - there is no official religion here, in the education of students, they rely on traditional, common Christian values.

The school is doing everything possible so that even the most modest and self-contained pupils can maximize their exposure, show their talents and abilities, freely communicate with other children and learn to interact with different people. Upon admission, the applicant must demonstrate a sufficiently high level of language knowledge (English), as there is no additional supportive course for foreign students.

The director from 2008 to the present day is Stewart Hay: a professor of electronic engineering and a great sports fan, shares interests to schoolchildren and is always ready to share his experience, advice, recommendation.

St. David's College is deservedly proud of the successes of its graduates, many of whom have become recognized professionals in their field of activity:

  • Jerry Moffatt, climber
  • Nick Elphic, sculptor
  • David Head, formerly executive director of Pepsi Australia
  • Edward Cadogan, Viscount Chelsea
  • Simeon Oakley, program manager on British television and many others.

About the educational program: St. David's College was one of the first to adopt the "one subject - several teachers" educational system. At school 16 highly specialized teachers are taught, three are engaged exclusively in mathematics. Each student can take individual lessons in a special center of Cadogan, located directly on campus; actively compiling a unique, personal plan of studies.

Teaching staff:

  • Teachers, who help foreign students to learn English almost at the level of the native speaker;
  • Two practicing psychologists;
  • An experienced speech therapist (for some categories of children, regular speech practices are organized, helping them gain confidence and remove the blocks in communication).

Approximately 20% of students register annually for the "More capable and talented" program: it enables potentially active and gifted children to succeed in one or more spheres.

Accommodation, meals, prices

Directly on campus David's College there were built cozy and comfortable residences for students: when settling it takes into account the age and gender of the child. At the residence there are always teachers and school staff - they monitor the observance of order, discipline, cleanliness, fully guarantee the safety of children around the clock, 24/7.
