The Justus Liebig University of Giessen (JLU) combines a wide range of programs with the study of legal, economic, humanities, social, natural sciences. Agriculture, ecology and nutritional sciences, human medicine and veterinary medicine are subjects that are offered in this combination only in very few German universities. In the field of culture and the humanities, the study is devoted to Dynamics of Security, literature on the Holocaust, and applied theater studies. Research centers - the Giessen Center for Eastern Europe (GiZo) and the Center for Media and Interactivity (ZMI) - complete the profile of the university.

The university was founded by Landgrave Ludwig V of Hesse-Darmstadt in 1607. More than four hundred years of history of the Justus Liebig University in Giessen (JLU) is associated with the names of outstanding graduates - L. Jüngermann, F. Phoebus, R. Browns.

Accommodation, meals, prices

Students in Giessen live in one of the student residences or in the private sector. Thanks to its capabilities, JLU offers international students active support in finding accommodation.

Accommodation in a student residence is available for exchange students within the framework of mobility programs (Erasmus +, ISEP, cooperation with universities, other exchange programs).

JLU dorm rooms will be reserved if applications for admission and dorms are submitted by January 15th or July 15th.

  • The university conducts a number of programs in English: English-language research, agrobiotechnology, choreography, performance, insect biotechnology, bioresources, international law, global change, ecosystem science, politics.
  • The goal of JLU courses and consultations is to expand competencies across disciplines, transfer key qualifications, interpersonal skills, promote applications, career prospects.
  • The learning environment at JLU is continually assessed in dialogue with students and faculty. Annual surveys show that the proportion of satisfied JLU undergraduate students has grown steadily since the 2006/07 winter semester, from 58% to about 80% in 2016/17.
  • JLU has a wide variety of teacher education and professional development programs. Since 2015, teacher training has been funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Gießener Offensive Teacher Training (GOL) project.
  • JLU works with universities and institutions around the world. About 100 universities in Europe and abroad are linked by agreements on partnership, cooperation, exchange. The university has agreements with more than 215 ERASMUS partner universities in Europe, 18 universities in North America, 9 universities in Australia.

Facilities and equipment at Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU)

  1. The Botanical Garden of the Justus Liebig University in Giessen is part of the Faculty of Biology and Chemistry. About 7,500 plant species from all over the world are grown on an area of about 3 hectares for the study of botany and research.
  2. The Justus Liebig Museum is the historical laboratory of the chemist Justus von Liebig, where he worked from 1824 to 1852. The laboratory has remained practically unchanged and is one of the ten most important museums in the history of chemistry.
  3. "Mathematicum" is the first interactive mathematical museum in the world, where about 200 exhibits open a new door to the world of mathematics. Visitors of all ages and educational levels are experimenting: adding puzzles, building bridges, racking their brains solving puzzles, standing in a giant soap bubble and much more.
  4. The city theater of Giessen was built at the initiative of the townspeople who wanted to build a theater site on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the university. The residents of Giessen donated 2/3 of the cost for the construction of the new theater. The city theater program includes performances, operas, operettas, dance performances, symphony and chamber concerts.
  5. Giessen offers its students many opportunities for extracurricular activities while studying and being on the move. The good thing about Giessen is that you don't have to travel long distances: student can quickly leave the city or drive to the greater Frankfurt am Main (about 60 km).
  6. General University Sports (ahs) offers a wide range of sports activities each semester, and many regional sports clubs also have an interesting program and welcome new members.
  7. If students enjoy making music and playing an instrument, the JLU Orchestra invites students. Choirs work at the university and in the city of Giessen and are happy to welcome new singers.
  8. The student communities of Giessen, the Catholic University of Giessen (KHG) and the Evangelical Student Community (ESG) offer a varied program of cultural activities.
  9. If international students want to participate in university politics, a number of political groups are organized at the university: Student Self-Government, Student Parliament (Stupa), General Student Committee (AStA), Student Councils (FS), etc.

Entry requirements, how to apply, what is required to enrol

To qualify for a bachelor's degree, students must obtain a university entrance qualification - Abitur (equivalent).

Some courses have additional special requirements.

Requirements for knowledge of German:

  • TestDaF at least 14 points;
  • B2 (or higher) certificates from Goethe-Institut, ÖSD or TELC;
  • ZMP (Central Intermediate Exam);
  • onDaF (TestDaF Institute) not less than 65%.

Scholarships Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU)

  • Under its own funding program, the University of Justus Liebig awards postgraduate scholarships annually plus extra award for consumables and travel expenses, if necessary, and other additional funding.
  • The university supports budding researchers in the form of research grants. They are provided annually to postdocs working as junior faculty at the university as seed funding for promising projects.
  • The Just'us Postdoctoral Program provides scholarships to outstanding young researchers based on the recommendations of JLU professors. The Just'us program has two funding lines for internal candidates and doctoral candidates from external organizations.
