Central Hesse Technical University of Applied Sciences (THM) is a German higher education institution that provides bachelor's and master's degree programs. It is one of the oldest in terms of the date of foundation.

The history of the university began in 1838, when the Giessen School of Technical Art was opened, in which artisans were trained in reading, drawing, and simple calculations. Over the next 15 years, other institutions joined the school, faculties were opened, and new curricula were created. The university was officially established in 1971.

In recent years, the number of students has exceeded 16,000 people, and the teaching staff is represented by about 4,000 highly qualified specialists in various fields.

Accommodation, meals, prices

On the campus in Giessen, 10 dormitories of different comfort have been built. For placement in them are prepared:

Depending on the choice of accommodation option, kitchenettes, showers and toilets are common. The buildings are equipped with guest areas, laundries, sports halls, on the territories - parking for cars and bicycles, shops.

The cost of living in Giessen ranges from 183 to 752 €.

Dormitories in Fulda are five territories with buildings in which they are equipped:

Many living quarters have private bathrooms, pantries. The cost of living depending on the rental area: from 183 to 625 €.

In Friedberg on two territories are built:

The apartments and apartments are equipped with kitchens, toilets and showers, in the rooms - only bedrooms. The price for accommodation in residential buildings in Friedberg ranges from 216 to 415 €.

In many buildings of the university there are cafeterias, canteens, vending machines. The canteens feature a variety of meat, fish, vegan and vegetarian dishes, salads, drinks and more. One portion will cost the student from 0.60 to 4.60 €.

Activities Central Hesse Technical University of Applied Sciences

Many different classes are held at the sports facilities of the institution:

Most students participate in student associations: from national sports teams and dance groups to volunteer activities and social works.

The university's educational campuses are located in the central part of Germany - in Friedberg, Giessen and Wetzlar. The infrastructure of the university contains:

Admission dates and extra charges

Studying at THM is possible on a full-time and remote basis. The academic year contains three semesters: autumn, spring, summer. During the summer semester, sports and recreation courses are organized from April 25 to July 15. Holidays are held on public holidays, in January and August.

Entry requirements, how to apply, what is required to enrol

You should apply to the university at least four weeks before the deadline.

  • Summer: December 1-March 20
  • Winter: June 1-September 20.

For admission you will need:

  • Certificate of graduation from school – for bachelors, bachelor's degree – for masters
  • Official transcripts of final exams
  • Transcript of the university or faculty, if the student has already studied somewhere
  • Certificate of Proficiency in German
  • Personal documents: passport, residence permit, visa, medical insurance
  • Registration fee – 75€.

Accepted German language certificates:

  • DSH not lower than the second level
  • TestDaf – minimum 4 points for each section
  • Kultusministerkonferenz's Sprachdiplom Level II
  • Diploma from the Goethe-Institut
  • ZOP (Zentrale Oberstufenprüfung) by Goethe-Institut
  • TELC C1.

School graduates who have never studied at a university before have the opportunity to take a preparatory course lasting one year. Before starting his studies in Germany, the applicant must study for at least one year in his country.

The one-year Studienkolleg course gives admission to those who do not have the qualification for direct admission to the university. The mandatory entrance test requires a level of knowledge of the German language not lower than B2. During the course, applicants are enrolled in THM.

Scholarships Central Hesse Technical University of Applied Sciences

The scholarship application can be submitted by students who have academic success and take part in student clubs or research projects.

Financial aid is paid to foreign students under these programs:

  • ESG (Evangelische Studierendengemeinde) – Association of Protestant Students
  • KHG (Katholische Hochschulgemeinde) – Catholic Student Association
  • Förderverein für unschuldig in Not geratene Studierende is an association for students experiencing financial difficulties through no fault of their own.

Some scholarship programs:

  • The DAAD grant provides assistance to foreign students in the last stages of their studies in the form of a partial monthly scholarship of 250€
  • The Ministry of Science and Arts of the State of Hesse awards scholarships to particularly talented and successful refugee students, doctoral students and scientists within the framework of the HessenFonds program.
  • BaföG government grants to support German citizens.
