Ernst-Kalkul Private Gymnasium is one of the traditional and oldest secondary boarding schools in Bonn. In 1880, Ernst Kalkul (1849-1918) from Remscheid, having gained experience as a teacher in private schools in England and France, decided to open his own school for boys in Oberkassel near Bonn, then the “Institute of Kalkul”. In her speech on the occasion of the school's 125th anniversary on 27 September 2005, Bonn Mayor Berbel Dieckmann emphasized the importance of today's Ernst-Kalkuhl-Gymnasium for the city of Bonn. It also praised the special educational approach of the school, which, based on 125 years of experience, is able to set educational emphasis in the field of holistic pedagogy.
