The International School of Bremen (ISB) is a private school of international education that offers training programs for students of all school ages: from kindergarten to grade 12. At the end of their studies, middle school students receive the International General Certificate of Cambridge Education (IGCSE), and senior students receive the International Baccalaureate (IBDP).

The institution opened its doors in 1998, two years after the idea of founding a school that would provide high-quality education to students from different countries appeared. The initial enrollment of students included no more than 50 applicants, and currently exceeds a hundred new students each year. About 380 students constantly communicate, study and engage in versatile development on campus.

Educational process

ISB has an online distance learning platform that was developed during the Covid-19 pandemic. At the moment, it provides educational articles, the opportunity to study from anywhere in the world for those who cannot come to Bremen.

Early Learning

The Early Development Center offers young children the opportunity to start their education in an energetic, caring and fun atmosphere. Students in grades EL1 and EL2 study on topics included in the International Early Childhood Curriculum.

The training covers all areas of development necessary for a solid personal base: cognitive, personal, social and emotional skills. The program includes the study of many important areas: literacy and numeracy, taking care of yourself and others, safety and health, languages and much more. Children are assessed in an informal setting, observing their interaction with each other and in a single setting.

The elementary department covers grades 1-5 and trains students in the International Elementary Curriculum (IPC). It is a comprehensive and creative curriculum with specific objectives for each subject. Secondary School — GCSE

Students in grades 8-10 take subject exams for the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE). IGCSEs are recognized by leading universities and employers around the world and are considered an international passport of academic progress and success. Students will have to pass several mandatory and additional disciplines of their choice, including:

  • Two languages: English and French/German,
  • Social sciences,
  • Humanities
  • Natural sciences: biology, chemistry, physics,
  • Computer technologies.

IB Diploma

  • Age — from 16 years,
  • The training period is 2 years.

The International Baccalaureate (IBDP) curriculum offers students training in six main subject groups, from which it is necessary to choose up to six disciplines for the exam. Each course is chosen for two years and is assessed both "inside" by the ISB and the IB organization "outside". External assessment usually takes the form of written tests, while internal assessment varies depending on the nature of the subject: from oral presentations to practical or written work. For the study of the subject in an in-depth format, about 240 hours of classes are given over two years, compared with 150 hours for standard disciplines.

In addition to the six IBDP subjects, students also take several courses:

  • The theory of knowledge (TOC), in which students reflect on the nature of knowledge,
  • Extended Essay (EE), which is an independent independent research-essay for 4000 words,
  • Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS), in which students complete a project related to these three concepts.

Accommodation, meals, prices

The institution provides accommodation in a new boarding house, which has prepared single and double rooms for 23-46 students aged 14 years and older. The building is located a 10-minute walk from the ISB educational buildings. The rooms have bicycle storage, a seating and self-study area, a bathroom, a kitchenette for self-catering. Wi-Fi, wired internet connection are available in the building.

There is a cafeteria in the pension, providing residents with delicious, fresh and healthy food throughout their stay. Students will be able to purchase salads, hot dishes, drinks and pastries. Kitchen staff are ready to observe the medical, dietary and other predispositions of students, offering alternative food.

The cost of one meal varies depending on the class and ranges from 3.60 to 4.50 €. The cafeteria is also available for parents – lunch will cost them 5.70 €.

The location of the hostel is convenient for trips around the city and its surroundings:

  • 15 minutes by tram to the central railway station and the city center,
  • 30 minutes by tram to the airport.

Activities International School of Bremen

ISB has created many opportunities for the development of sports, creative and intellectual abilities of students. One of them is participation in the International Duke of Edinburgh Award, which allows students to show their skills in different directions under the guidance of qualified instructors. Since 2007, many students have decorated their portfolios with certificates of merit in the field of social activities and extraordinary abilities.

Middle school students have the opportunity to participate in the G.I.N. (Global Issues Network) program, which contributes to raising awareness of the world's environmental, ethical and economic issues. A UN academic simulation is also available to inform participants about current developments relating to the environment, international human rights relations, diplomacy and United Nations agendas. The ISB regularly merges with other schools, sending its "delegates" to similar conferences held locally or nationally.

On the campus of the school there are a variety of hobby clubs, music and art studios, individual lessons on playing musical instruments, language practices and much more that will help students discover new talents and master previously unfamiliar areas.

The school year lasts from the end of August to the last week of June. During the year, several weeks of vacations and weekends are provided in honor of national and international holidays. Classes take place on weekdays, and activities are most often organized in the afternoon or on weekends.
