At the age of 15, students must pass the final exam to obtain a certificate of full secondary education SCESG – Scottish Certificate of Education Standard Grade (which corresponds to GCSE in the UK), thereby completing the first stage (Nationals). Next, students have a choice: either go to college to get a professional education, or continue studying in high school at the age of 16 to 18. After successful completion of this stage, graduates receive a Higher Degree certificate, which is sufficient for admission to higher educational institutions in Scotland.

There are more than 40 colleges in Scotland offering special vocational education. These educational institutions offer studying in various professional qualifications, such as computer science, fundamentals of business and entrepreneurship, sports and tourism, design, medicine, journalism, etc. A year of study at such an educational institution allows you to get a Higher National Certificate, and two years of study - a Higher Education Diploma.
