Education information

Transitioning from high school to university education in the Netherlands can be challenging, especially if you are an international student. A special Foundation program can help here, within the framework of which you can not only improve your academic knowledge, but also get acquainted with a new culture and adapt to a new learning style.

Benefits of Studying in the Netherlands

  1. Widespread English Proficiency: The Netherlands is among Europe's leading countries where English-taught programs in universities have long been established. Currently, there are over 2100 programs spanning a variety of fields, from bioengineering to comparative literature. Consequently, prospective students don't necessarily have to learn Dutch prior to admission; proficiency in English is sufficient. If needed, students can always attend language schools for a few months. Moreover, 95% of the population speaks English fluently, making the stay in the Netherlands comfortable for foreigners even without knowledge of Dutch.

  2. Opportunities for Academic Careers: Most doctoral programs in the Netherlands are academic positions at universities that recruit and fund their candidates. The robust infrastructure of universities, emphasis on the practical application of research findings, and a thriving academic community make the doctoral programs in the country among the most prestigious in Europe.

  3. International Recognition: In the 2021 QS rankings, nine Dutch universities were listed in the top 200 best universities worldwide. The Netherlands is firmly associated with innovation and a creative approach to science and education. Renowned university programs in urban planning, architecture, engineering, design, and sustainable development, along with world-famous art schools, attract forward-thinking youths from all over the globe.

  4. Informal Learning Environment: Dutch universities foster an environment where students and instructors interact as equals. It's common to address professors by their first name and question them. Students aren't expected to always agree with their instructors' perspectives. This approach nurtures independent judgment, critical thinking, and the ability to defend one's viewpoint. University educators serve as facilitators of knowledge and guides to scientific discoveries, rather than merely being information dispensers.

  5. The Joy of Learning: This is how the Dutch describe their education system! Educational institutions in the Netherlands are entirely student-centric, creating a learning environment that's free from stress. Universities don't promote competition or categorize students based on who excels and who doesn't; average performance is seen as the norm. This approach ensures that students maintain confidence in their abilities and are motivated to work without the risk of falling into depression or experiencing emotional burnout.

  6. Safety and Multicultural Atmosphere: The Netherlands ranks among the top countries globally in safety and is listed among the 25 countries with the fewest crimes. According to a global ranking in 2019, the Netherlands secured the 17th position. The country warmly welcomes foreigners and embraces people from diverse nations with varying religious and political beliefs. In the Netherlands, one can find churches, mosques, synagogues, as well as temples for Hindus, Buddhists, and Sikhs. Equality and multiculturalism are intrinsic to Dutch policies.

Foundation Program in English in the Netherlands

The Foundation Program is designed for international students who wish to pursue higher education in the Netherlands. It offers intensive training in academic skills, courses aligned with the chosen bachelor's degree program, and English language proficiency (based on the student's initial skill level).

Reasons to Consider the Foundation Program:

  • If a student's proficiency in English/Dutch isn't sufficient for direct admission.
  • If academic credentials or examination results don't meet the university's requirements.
  • To ensure a smoother transition from high school to higher education.
  • To acclimate to life and study in the Netherlands.
  • For a chance to gain admission to a prestigious research university without the standard admission process.

Successful graduates are automatically admitted to the university that offers the Foundation Program. Alternatively, they may choose to apply to other institutions.

The typical duration of these preparatory programs is one year, and the coursework during this time is intensive. Besides preparing for university admission, a key aim is to familiarize students with the delivery method, assessment, and evaluation of academic material. In a year, students get acclimatized to the new educational system.

Generally, preparatory courses include modules on specialized subjects (like business, economics and social sciences, or engineering) and advanced language study. In the English/Dutch language courses, in addition to language proficiency, there's a focus on academic skills such as scientific writing and reading, presentations, note-taking, essay writing, and foreign language discussions. Some programs even assign a mentor to students to assist with administrative procedures. Beyond regular classes, Foundation Programs offer career guidance sessions and occasionally, cultural events.

The Foundation Program encompasses a wide range of activities: seminars, project work, workshops, and hands-on sessions. There's also a module on Dutch culture to help students better understand their new environment and its people. Students are assessed through written assignments, homework, presentations, and examinations.

Admission Requirements: For admission to preparatory programs in the Netherlands, students must provide a high school diploma with a good average score and an English proficiency certificate (IELTS from 5.0, TOEFL iBT from 61). Other documents may be required based on the specific program chosen.

Costs: The fees for preparatory programs can vary. The most affordable program is a 4-week program from Saxion University, priced at €2100, which includes tuition and accommodation. Year-long preparatory programs for admission to Dutch universities start from €13,675.
