Accommodation, meals, prices
Accommodation is offered in three student dormitories, which are brick five-storey buildings of corridor type.
- In the Cadet's House, living rooms are located from the 2nd to the 5th floors. On each floor there are toilets, washbasins, kitchens, on the 1st, 2nd and 4th floors there are showers.
- In the hostel No. 3, living rooms are located from the 1st to the 5th floors. The rooms are occupied by 2-3 people. On each floor there are toilets, washbasins and kitchens, on the ground floor there is a laundry room and showers, on the 4th floor there is a hall for classes.
- In the hostel No. 1, living rooms are located from the 2nd to the 5th floors. On each floor there are toilets, washbasins and kitchens. On the 1st floor there is a laundry room, a washing machine, on the 2nd and 3rd floors there are showers. On the 3rd floor there is a reading room and an ironing room.
All dormitories are equipped with automatic fire alarms, video surveillance in the corridors, entrance area and around the perimeter of the building.
The main meals of students are organized in the canteen for 100 seats, additional - in the buffet, coffee machines work.
Meals for cadets are provided in the canteen of the Cadet House for 320 seats. Cadets of the school are provided with three hot meals a day: breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Extracurricular activities at the university are developing in the following areas:

The military-patriotic association "Flagman" in November 2021 for the first time performed from the Nizhny Novgorod region in the final of the All-Russian student military-patriotic game "Zarnitsa" in Rostov-on-Don. Every year, the team of "Flagman" becomes the leader among the participants of regional and district competitions in military-applied disciplines.
On the basis of the university, the student club holds a national film screening "Podolsk Cadets", historical quizzes on the theme of the Great Patriotic War.
The university implements a set of measures in the field of patriotic education: various meetings, seminars, and the development of the club movement of the historical profile.
The creative direction is also pronounced. Drummers of the Nizhny Novgorod River School named after I.P. Kulibin in 2021 became participants in the regional stage of the "Student Spring".

To develop practical skills, the university has an educational and sports base "Vodnik", a base "Academician" and a motor ship "Peter Andrianov".
VSUWT has an extensive database of teaching and upbringing tools, which includes: devices and equipment, including sports equipment and inventory, instruments (including musical), educational and visual aids, computers, information and telecommunication networks, hardware, software and audiovisual means, printed and electronic educational and information resources.
Medical care for university students is organized under an agreement with the Federal Budgetary Institution "Volga District Medical Center" of the Federal Medical and Biological Agency.

The Scientific and Technical Library of VSUWT was founded together with the Institute on December 25, 1930. The foundation of the fund was 10,056 books received from the Volga Shipping Company Administration. Currently, the library is one of the largest industry for water transport in Russia.
