Digital Media Academy runs summer camps on the St. George campus of the University of Toronto. The location of the campus in the center makes it an ideal place for students, allows you to realize a variety of interests, make new friends. Every year, the camp offers children and teenagers various STEAM courses, covering video game coding, robotics, film production, Java programming. Students will create their own animation sequences, new technological applications, their own laptops, master 3D printing, and other important qualities that are in demand today - the basics of teamwork, leadership, critical thinking.
Originally founded in 1827 as King's College, the University of Toronto developed, now it occupies three different 180 acre campuses. Here, some of the greatest discoveries in the field of medicine, science, and technology were made: insulin was developed here in 1921, stem cells were discovered in 1963. The first electron microscope was constructed in 1938. It was also created multi-touch technology, used by modern smartphones, computers. SciNet School Consortium also runs Canada's most powerful supercomputer. Startup academy
Startup Academy is an introduction to entrepreneurship program, it starts with the basic principles of forming a business idea, design thinking concepts, business modeling, including case studies of successful global startups. Young people learn teamwork skills, the basics of creating significant social, economic value, conducting market research, developing a prototype of a product or service, and checking the conformity of the market. Next, students present their business ideas to other course participants, parents, and teachers.
Week 2 includes a study of startup, business expansion: students will learn about management, execution, basic principles of business expansion, fundraising strategies, business presentation to investors. Students will master the tools, methodologies used by successful entrepreneurs.
3D Modeling & Animation Academy
3D-design, modeling will help to find their place in many types of modern creative careers. Teenagers will learn the working processes of designing, releasing 3D models, the basics of character design, create their own original 3D details, sets of figures, characters. Using Autodesk Maya, participants will be able to revive the characters using lighting, settings, camera angles. They will study work processes, use pre-assembled models, and animate them in an original short sequence that tells a story.
Illustration & Animation Academy
Using modern tools for creating works of art - Toon Boom Harmony, Adobe Photoshop, young people will receive everything they need to create works of professional quality. By the end of the classes, students will develop portfolio elements that allow you to start a career as an animator, commercial artist. Potential animators, illustrators get direct experience as a production designer. Through the use of professional production tools, Toon Boom Harmony, Adobe Photoshop, students will move from a passion for creative work to a career in art, 2D Animation Production. Young people will develop ready-to-work assets (characters, backgrounds, props), include them in a high-level portfolio.
Game Development Academy with VR
The program offers students to develop their own game, apply the capabilities of virtual reality. Using the standard Unity gaming environment, students will learn how to use the Unity editor to create levels, environments, program mechanics in C #, and develop several managed projects. Pupils work together or independently, to create their own game, using assets, mechanics of their choice. Teenagers will learn how best to use the Unity game development engine, solve unique design problems that arise when developing virtual and augmented reality, understand the principles of the game engine, how to control the movement of platforms, artificial intelligence, and learn the basics of C # programming.
Audio & Music Production Academy
The course will teach students to structure songs, recreate the sounds they hear, record their own unique tracks. Topics covered include recording, audio sampling, synthesizer, percussion, improvisation, mixing basics, mastering. Participants will master the theory, the foundations of the composition, the process of music production, and advanced audio techniques. By the end of the week, young people will compose, produce their own song, apply advanced concepts of music production.
Filmmaking academy
The course begins with the basic principles of short narrative film production: script structure, functionality, camera operation, description of roles. Students will learn teamwork skills, create storyboards, direct, edit, upload each of their projects to their own YouTube channel. In the second week, students will study the design of titles, the basic VFX Adobe Photoshop, After Effects, will begin work on a short project. Pupils will film projects of various genres, including narration, music video, documentary films. All students will leave this course with several completed film works.
Artificial Intelligence Academy
Young people will master the introduction to artificial intelligence, machine learning using Python: at the beginning of the first week, students will learn the basics of machine learning, artificial intelligence, their impact on the world, and will create projects based on machine learning with block programming. As they progress through the course, students will learn the basics of Python programming, develop machine learning projects: chat bots, predictive models, game bots.
At the beginning of the second week, students will learn ways, applied data science, to apply artificial intelligence using Python to data, tools, services, as well as ways to apply AI to their projects. Young people will master the theory, mathematics of machine learning, solve data problems using these skills, strategies.
Software Development & Coding Academy
Students will learn Java, use React, and develop mobile applications for several platforms, including iOS, Android, Windows Mobile. Young people will learn how to use processing commands to learn the basics of programming, create their own drawings, and animation. By the end of the week, students will be learning object-oriented programming in Java to create multi-class games or applications.
Participants will master mobile application development with React, learn how to combine new React, HTML, Javascript, CSS skills to create useful, fun applications. By the end of the week, they will be building strong interfaces, apps, or games of their choice.
Robotics & Engineering Academy
Robotics & Engineering Academy members will design, program a robot using Arduino, a pi-top laptop using Python, and then take it home.
The participants will get acquainted with the world of robotics, electrical engineering, will move from basic programming concepts, electronic circuits to creating a robot, exploring the capabilities of each sensor, actuator by programming the RedBot Arduino platform.
Students will master the basics of programming, circuitry, will develop their own unique projects using Raspberry Pi, various sensors. Students will learn the basics of Python, physical computing Pi, an Internet connection for remote communication.
Intro to 3D Modeling with Maya
3D-design, modeling open the door to all kinds of modern creative careers. After learning the basics of the user interface, Maya tools, young people will practice creating complex forms, models, master basic modeling concepts, learn advanced skills, methods while students model the character, create textures, and form the final model. Throughout the course, students gain an understanding of the possibilities of a future career, studio roles, the benefits of participating in joint processes.
3D Character Animation with Maya
Develop an understanding of storytelling and character animation with standard 3D Autodesk Maya software. Students will learn how to animate characters using lighting, settings, and camera angles. We will teach you the workflows that will take pre-mounted models and animate them in an original short story-telling sequence.
Based on their knowledge of the basics of 3D modeling, students will transfer their design skills from modeling to animation, like professionals. By the end of the week, students will understand key frames, facial expressions, character poses, object modeling, and the process of preparing for work.
Intro to 2D Animation & Digital Illustration
Students of Intro to 2D Animation & Digital Illustration will study drawing, illustrations, use professional software, graphic design equipment, and learn how to revive their characters. They will leave the course with basic knowledge, experience in professional illustration, animation. Students will explore a professional animation pipeline, pay special attention to illustrative preproduction, and will use standard tools - Photoshop, Toon Boom Harmony. Students will create a production package or portfolio of illustrated works, apply them to the final animation.
2D Animation Production & Character Development
The course is aimed at potential production artists, students will use Toon Boom Harmony, Adobe Photoshop tools to create works of art, simulate ready-to-work resources, and learn the intricacies of finding themselves at an advanced production studio. They will acquire the skills necessary to become software professionals, industry professionals.
2D Animation Production will give future animators direct experience as a production designer. Thanks to the use of professional production tools, young people will go beyond a simple passion for art, take the first steps to an illustrator career.
Students will create a repertoire of ready-to-work assets (characters, backgrounds, props, which can be used as an upscale portfolio). Students will learn important tools, X-Sheets, Node Viewers, character modeling, camera controls, allowing them to become an effective production designer.
Intro to Game Design with Unity
Digital Media Academy gives students the opportunity to become the creators of digital media, to develop a good gaming product using advanced technical tools. Unity is the basic structure used to develop most of the video games that people play today. Students will use the Unity editor to model levels, environments, C # programming, and run several managed projects. Young people will work together or independently, create their own game, using assets, mechanics of their choice.
Game Development with Unity & VR
Game development is undergoing significant changes as virtual reality continues to push the boundaries of storytelling, games, and interactive experiences. Creating their own game or virtual reality experience will help students achieve significant success in this developing field.
They will learn the skills necessary to create games, virtual reality experiences for a mobile phone or headset, use tools to create a story or augmented reality game. Having studied the best ways to use the Unity game development engine, participants will solve unique design problems that arise when creating virtual, augmented reality. Young people will learn how the game engine controls the movement of platforms, artificial intelligence, and learn the basics of C # programming.
Intro to Music Production with Ableton
Students learn all about production, recording their own music, developing audio production skills. The course teaches students the technical, creative skills of electronic music production. They will study the theory of music, which explains what makes an effective melody, rhythm, mixing.
Young people will learn how to use professional music software to record their own ideas, to record a song from beginning to end. Topics covered include beat production, audio, MIDI recordings, wavetable synthesis, creative samples, mixing, mastering. Throughout the week, teens will create original tracks, remixes, collages, remakes of popular songs, using templates developed by DMA teachers.
Music Production & Songwriting with Ableton
Music is an important part of human collective experience and, like most of our lives, today it is increasingly expanding its borders thanks to technology. Students will learn the creative process of writing songs, the technical theory of modern music, song creation. Students will learn the process of creating, the basics of theory, composing music using the Hookpad editor.
Teens will learn how to combine different types of sounds inspired by musical styles, learn how to record, edit a live performance of Ableton Live 10. They will learn, apply advanced methods of music production, sound engineering, compose, produce their own songs.
Intro to Filmmaking & Video Production with Premiere
Using the latest equipment, techniques, software, students will learn the intricacies of video production, make films, use the Adobe Premiere editing kit, which is trusted by professionals.
The course begins with the basic principles of short film production: script structure, camera functionality, camera work, role description. Young people will learn teamwork skills, learn how to make storyboards, direct, edit. Students will prepare two or three short films from start to finish, study all types of work, they will share, reflect, and receive constructive feedback. Projects will be written, executed by small teams of 3-5 people. Each student will edit their version of the project using material shot by the group.
Filmmaking & visual effects with after effects
Based on the students' knowledge of the basic principles of filmmaking, students begin work starting with a short narrative project that they will complete on the first day of the course.
Participants shoot film projects of various genres, including narration, music video, documentary, art, master the design of captions, the main visual effects or VFX using Adobe Photoshop, Adobe After Effects, before starting the second short film. Young people will receive basic knowledge of sound design for the production of videos, films.
Social Content Masterclass: TikTok + Instagram
Based on the students' knowledge of the basic principles of filmmaking in this course, students begin work, starting with a short short narrative project, which they complete on the first day of the course.
Film projects can be in different genres, including narration, music video, documentary, art and much more. Students will then learn about caption design, basic visual effects, or VFX using Adobe Photoshop, Adobe After Effects, before embarking on a second short project. Students will learn how to use the green screen effectively. In addition, students will receive basic knowledge of sound design for the production of video, films.
Intro to Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning
Artificial intelligence, automation will replace almost half of all workers 16-24 years old. Outstripping this trend, program participants will learn how the machines that will perform this work work.
Teenagers will get acquainted with machine learning tools, use them to create amazing things: they will teach a computer to play their favorite game, find patterns that a person cannot see, create interactive simulations. Applied Data Science & Artificial Intelligence w / Python
The course is based on the student’s knowledge of the basics of Python, machine learning: they will simulate a digital machine that will be able to report books, form neural networks that play games, translate text.
Students will learn how artificial intelligence applies to data, tools, services, and learn how they can apply AI to their own projects. By the end of the week, young people will master the theory, mathematics of machine learning, solve data problems using these skills and strategies.
Intro to Java Programming
Java is the most widely used programming language, the best way to get started with coding. Participants will have the opportunity to open the door with knowledge, know-how to use the Java language, which allows you to develop applications, games, drawings.
Students will use processing commands when learning the basics of programming, creating their own drawings, animations. By the end of the week, students will learn object-oriented Java programming to create multi-class games or applications.
Mobile App Development with React
React Native is a development tool that professionals choose when creating mobile applications for several platforms, including iOS, Android, Windows Mobile. Based on students' knowledge of Java, the course will allow students to move on to developing their own applications or games. Students will combine new skills in HTML, Javascript, CSS to create useful, fun applications. They will learn how to develop powerful interfaces, applications or games of their choice.
Build a robot with arduino
The Build a Robot with Arduino course gives an excellent idea of the world of robotics, electrical engineering, helps to move from basic programming concepts, electronic circuits to creating a robot, exploring the capabilities of each sensor, actuator by programming with Arduino to perform automated tasks. The week ends with a choice of two final tests: a navigation course in the maze, a battle with balloons. Participants will program, assemble a robot, take it home.
Build and Program a Laptop with Python
Raspberry Pi, Python opens up a new world for students, where they become designers, creators of incredible things. Students will collect, take home a pi-top laptop: an ideal tool that will help them learn how to code, create amazing devices, and raise their knowledge to a new level.
The course is based on knowledge of basic programming, circuitry, which allows students to create their own unique projects using Raspberry Pi, various sensors. Teens will learn the basics of Python, physical computing with Pi, using the Pi's Internet connection for remote communication.
Adventures in 3D Printing & Modeling
Over the past decade, creativity has undergone an incredible evolution thanks to the capabilities of 3D printing, continuing to grow rapidly. The course will give students a basic understanding, experience with software, hardware responsible for custom 3D printing.
Young people will spend a week using CAD software called Tinkercad, learn how to split real objects into three-dimensional shapes, learn about the 3D printing process, use objects from Tinkercad, set them up for printing in the Cura app, and learn how to print them on Ultimaker 2+ printers. Pupils will leave the camp with 4 specially designed 3D printed objects.
Adventures in game design
Young people learn to realize their ideas, stories, applying the skills of game design. Having discovered the exciting world of game development, participants will learn the basic principles of game design, game theory, character creation, storytelling of digital stories, publications. They will be able to create, customize game elements using Adobe Photoshop, practice solving problems, developing creative solutions in a supportive community of growing designers. At the end of the week, students will take their developments home, share with friends, family.
Adventures in Coding & Artificial Intelligence
The Adventures in Coding & Artificial Intelligence program provides students with the opportunity to explore the world of artificial intelligence, machine learning, to understand how they affect life today, whether they can be used for projects. Students will master the beginnings of programming, teaching machine learning models, and develop dynamic, “smart” projects - chat bots, image recognizers, and much more.

- Digital Media Academy offers classes Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The extended day option allows students to stay until 6:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

Entry requirements, how to apply, what is required to enrol
Camp participants study, communicate in English, so the level of language proficiency should be sufficient to understand technological terms, interact with instructors, fellow students.
Scholarships University of Toronto Summer Camp
The Nudelman Family Fund provides students of Digital Media Academy with one thousand full scholarships, allowing world-class STEM education to interested and motivated students, and to increase the number of women in STEM, half of the scholarships are reserved for girls. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of merit, needs, cover the cost of tuition, meals, service fees. Fellowship applications are completed two weeks before the start date of the selected course.
Applicants fill out an application for a scholarship on the Digital Media Academy Tech Camps website. To fill out the application you will need the following information:

- Average mark (after awarding a scholarship, you will need to provide proof of academic achievement)
