The Summer Program at Rothesay Netherwood School is a summer academic program for children from 13 to 17 years old, taking place on the campus of a boarding school in Canada.

Rothesay Netherwood School (RNS) organizes programs for students in grades 6-12 throughout the school year. The school's campus is located in Rothesay, New Brunswick and has a large area with modern infrastructure, facilities and many areas for recreation and entertainment. During the summer months, students from all over the world have the opportunity to have unforgettable experiences and diverse experiences by attending themed courses.

The team of teachers, tutors and coaches has the highest qualifications to teach specialized subjects and educate children. Every year, energetic counselors are recruited for summer programs, who are entrusted with the care of the pupils and ensuring their safety.

Educational process

The approach to teaching in summer programs is based on Integrated Content and Language Learning (CLIL) and is holistic and diverse. The CLIL curriculum is based on four components: content, cognition, communication, culture. With their help, the student will be able to:

  • Expand knowledge of the key topics of the curriculum in the selected subject areas,
  • Develop cognitive, thinking and fast, effective learning skills,
  • Work on communication skills using English, students will learn how to present well and write an extended essay,
  • Understand your culture and your role as a global citizen, your beliefs and values.

The CLIL approach guarantees the most effective way to improve the knowledge of the English language, as a variety of forms of teaching are used for children: play, research, academic.

Summer Program: Explorers & Engagers

  • Age — from 13 to 17 years old,
  • The duration of the training is one or two weeks.

The large-scale summer course is available to students from 13 to 17 years old. The training for one to two weeks is varied and offers:

  • In the first week: Get Outdoors and Entrepreneur Camp,
  • In the second week: Public Speaking Camp and STEAM Camp.

Students have the opportunity to put together an individual schedule and study only what is interesting and close to them. There are 24 to 30 hours of academic instruction each week, with lessons taking place from Monday to Thursday.

Description of thematic programs:

  • Entrepreneurship Camp (14-17 years old): Delving into Economics, Business and Entrepreneurship. Through dynamic projects, students will learn everything from developing strategies and business plans to marketing skills and ethical entrepreneurship.
  • Get Outdoor (13-15 years old): A four-day outdoor recreation course that aims to explore nature and gain valuable experience: reading maps, making a fire, preparing for the journey, weaving knots and ropes, cooking in the field. Students will develop teamwork and leadership skills, solve complex problems under the guidance of experienced teachers and counselors.
  • STEAM Camp (ages 13-17): A dynamic blend of academics, language learning, and hands-on learning focused on STEAM subjects: Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. The curriculum contains a wide variety of topics, from immersion in computer science and robotics, exploring the implications of artificial intelligence, and unraveling the mysteries of human biology to solving environmental problems and engineering solutions. Regardless of Whether your child is passionate about the inner workings of the world or an exciting career in STEAM, this course is perfect for aspiring engineers, tech enthusiasts, and inquisitive minds.
  • Speaking & Debate Camp (14-17 years old): Empowering through voice training and building competent mono- and dialogues. The focus is on developing effective verbal communication and cooperation with others. Students will take part in seminars on the basics of speech and debate, master an introduction to various styles: individual, team.

In addition to the specialized training that students will choose for themselves, excursions, on-campus activities and developmental classes await them. The two-week program includes five full-day trips, and the one-week program includes three. Even if students choose to attend classes during the day, they will be able to attend all the events included in the course.

Each student in the two-week program will complete a 10-hour "Be a Leader" course in addition to the core curriculum, which will lead to a CPD qualification. Students will develop leadership and teamwork skills, participate in speaking engagements with experienced professionals, and take a self-assessment test. CPD Classification means continuous professional development and is a prestigious accreditation that will strengthen a student's resume.

The cost of the summer program includes all necessary fees:

  • With accommodation: accommodation in the residence, study materials and classes, "Be a Leader" program, three meals a day, travel and medical insurance, transfers, trips and activities,
  • Full-time format: training, study materials, lunches, some excursions.

Accommodation, meals, prices

Students in the summer program are accommodated in a comfortable residence at Rothesay Netherwood. The on-campus guesthouse offers students single-sex double accommodation with full furnishings and en-suite bathroom, WiFi access; Each child has their own desk and wardrobe, bed and storage boxes. Counselors and staff live next door to the children, providing comfort and safety around the clock.

Common are cozy living rooms and kitchens, which have the necessary appliances for preparing snacks and hot drinks.

Students also have a choice of Flexible Boarding, which allows them to stay in residence for one or more nights per week. If a student does not need on-campus accommodation, they can opt out of this service and only visit the school grounds during the day (say, if they are traveling with their parents).

Meals in the summer school are provided by a team of professional chefs who are able to meet any food needs: from standard to dietary. Residents of the guesthouse will enjoy themed evenings, cooking classes and the opportunity to taste cuisine from different parts of the world.

Activities Summer Program at Rothesay Netherwood School

From whale watching and sea kayaking to hiking the Hopewell Cliffs and having fun at Rockwood Park, the breathtaking nature of Canada will not leave children indifferent!

From Monday to Thursday, students stay on campus, immersing themselves in the natural beauty of the surrounding area. Evenings come alive with a variety of exciting activities, including an invigorating dip in the fresh water of the Kennebekasis River. Before going to bed, they will have gatherings around the fire and intellectual games, soulful singing with a guitar and even cooking dinner under the starry sky.  

Hiking in the forest is a great opportunity to explore the local flora and fauna, which is provided almost daily. At the end of the week, students are invited to participate in musical performances and concerts. 

Full-day excursions are available on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. They guarantee children an unforgettable experience: an exciting experience of whale watching in their natural habitat, learning about the history of the region in King's Landing, and water adventures in the Bay of Fundy. 

The entertainment program also includes trips to the Haupwell Cliffs to observe beautiful scenery and extreme tides, a visit to Canada's oldest city - St. John, sea kayaking in St. Martins and a hike challenge at the TimberTops rope park.

In the two-week camp, students will make five full-day trips, and in the week-long camp, students will make three.

Rothesay Netherwood School, which hosts summer programs on campus, is located in Rothesay, New Brunswick, Canada. Its location is adjacent to the state's natural beauties and attractions, as well as important transport places - for example, St. John Airport is a 10-minute bus or car ride away.

The 125-acre wooded area is located on the banks of the Kennebekasis River, which allows students to admire the beauty of these places on a daily basis, breathe fresh air and feel calm away from home. Campus amenities include:

Admission dates and extra charges

Summer courses usually take place from July to August, the dates may vary depending on the year. Students have a choice of the format of study: full-time, flexible or full board, depending on the choice, they will be offered a room in the residence and a certain type of meals.

Each week of study includes from 24 to 30 hours of academic and developmental classes: from Monday to Thursday — lessons, from Friday to Sunday — excursions and activities. Every day, students follow a schedule that includes special times for breakfast, lunch and dinner, educational and entertainment events, excursions. The day starts at 7:30 a.m. and ends at 10:00 p.m. when staying at the residence.

The cost of the program includes all the necessary services and fees that the student will need: accommodation, meals, transfers, excursions and activities. The list of additional expenses will only include additional travel and events on campus.

Enrolment process

Applicants need to fill out an online form and provide personal documents. Applicants will be contacted by the Admissions Office if there are places available. In case the child is eligible for enrollment, his/her family should make an initial payment of $250 or $800, depending on the chosen program: with or without accommodation. The prospective student then arrives on campus and begins their studies.

Perspectives

Each course provides graduates with certificates confirming the knowledge and skills they have acquired: from general education to the level of English language development. This document will strengthen the student's portfolio and help in the further stages of the educational path.

Entry requirements, how to apply, what is required to enrol

Foreign candidates need to provide a passport and birth certificate, health insurance, visa or residence permit. The education takes place in English, so the student will be comfortable with the level of knowledge from B2 (but this is not a mandatory criterion).
