The University of Oviedo (UNIOVI) is a public research university in the Principality of Asturias. The institution was founded in 1574 as a college for orphan girls, but fully opened only in 1608. Over the 400-year history, there have been many changes: name changes, obtaining accreditation in 2009, the introduction of bachelor's, master's, doctoral programs.

Every year, about 25,000 students study here, about 800 of them are foreigners. The teaching staff consists of more than 2000 highly qualified lecturers, researchers, professors.

Accommodation, meals, prices

On the campus of Los Catalanes in Oviedo there are two dormitories: San Gregorio and Dormitory of America. They are located in a vast area overlooking the Winter Park, next to the sports facilities of the university, near the old quarter of the city.

Dormitories offer accommodation with cleaning services, meals, WiFi. Accommodation options and services:

  • Bathroom in each room

The price of accommodation, including breakfast, ranges from 400 to 528€ per academic year.

The residence of the University of Altamira is a residential building near the Winter Park. Accommodation options and services:

The University Residence on the Mjeres campus offers modern rooms with 112 beds in private rooms or studio apartments with bathrooms and toilets. Common areas include a library, a computer room, a self-service restaurant, WiFi throughout the property. The residential building is located next to the educational, research, sports facilities of the campus, just a few minutes walk from the city center. The cost for a semester of accommodation in a single room, including breakfast - 336€,per month in an apartment for two - 609€.

UNIOVI has its own housing search platform (CIVE). Students wishing to rent an apartment can access information by contacting the university administration.

La Casa de Las Lenguas offers accommodation with host families.

Meals are provided in university restaurants:

UNIOVI campuses are located in the central region of the kingdom: the city of Oviedo - El Cristo building, El Milan, Llamaquique, Catalanes, Oviedo Center, as well as in the cities of Giljón, Mieres, Aviles.

The public transport network allows you to use a wide range of traffic, travel options in the region. The Asturias Transport Consortium (CTA) provides a student transport smart card – a monthly/ten-fold travel card that gives a 10% discount on travel.

Admission dates and extra charges

The academic year includes two semesters – the study lasts from September to January and from February to June. A session is held at the end of the year.

Most of the undergraduate degrees offered consist of 240 ECTS credits divided into four years of 60 credits each, with the exception of a degree in medicine (6 years/350 credits) and dentistry (5 years/300 ECTS credits). Master's programs are designed for 60-120 credits, i.e. education lasts 1-2 years. Full-time eduaction  in doctoral studies will last no more than three years. Part-time doctoral students will have no more than 5 years to complete their studies.

La Casa de las Lenguas courses are 90 hours of learning a foreign language in a group of 20 students. Classes are held twice a week, lasting for 85 minutes. At the end of the course, students who pass the exam receive a certificate of achievement. Those who did not pass the final test can receive a certificate of attendance.

Entry requirements, how to apply, what is required to enrol

To study in the La Casa de las Lenguas programs, the student must be at least 17 years old.

Before admission, every prospectant UNIOVI student must have access to the online questionnaire. After filling in the data, the applicant expects admission to book a place in the group. After admission, the registration fee = 300 €must bepaid.

General requirements for applicants:

  • Diploma of the previous stage of education (school/bachelor's/master's degree)
  • Official transcripts or textbook on the disciplines completed
  • Personal documents (passport, visa, medical certificates, etc.)
  • Testing for knowledge of English/Spanish.

Some master's degrees require a level of English at least B1.

Important dates:

  • Pre-registration period: April-June
  • Preliminary lists of enrolled students, reservation of places: July
  • Registration for education: August-September.
