Summer School in Sydney organizes exciting specialized programs for students from 13 to 18 years old. Courses focus on academic rigor, stimulating students' intellectual curiosity about their chosen subjects. Children will learn new concepts and share ideas in small groups of like-minded people under the guidance of experienced mentors who have honed their expertise by teaching at world-class universities, including Cambridge, Oxford and Harvard.

Classes are held on the campus of the very first university college in Australia - St Paul's College. Students have access to all its infrastructure and residential buildings, in which they live throughout their studies.

Summer programs are attended by students from all over the world - on the campus in Sydney you can meet representatives of more than 125 nationalities.

Academic Insights Programmes: Creating Writing

  • Age - from 13 to 18 years,
  • The training period is 10 days.

The introductory course in creative writing at the University of Sydney supports the development of the practice of creative writing in a variety of literary forms, with an emphasis on the importance of fiction and non-fiction in a changing world. The curriculum will introduce students to all stages of the writing process, including idea generation, writing and editing, reviewing drafts, and more.

Academic Insights Programmes: Engineering

Engineering students enrolled at the University of Sydney Summer School will be exposed to topics that form the foundation of engineering and gain new skills by working through a carefully designed program. They will understand the history and trends in engineering, gain a practical understanding of problem-solving through a series of practical problems and logic puzzles. Students will learn the basics of topics such as thermodynamics, materials, mechanics, and electrical engineering. 

Over the course of 10 days, including 35 hours of classes, children will learn:

Academic Insights Programmes: International Relations

The introductory course in International Relations will help students who would like to influence the socio-political agenda of their country and the rest of the world, often wonder how governments work and how their decisions affect not only their own country, but also the global level. The program will provide a solid foundation of knowledge about international relations.  In academic classes, the theoretical foundations are explored, with the help of which it is possible to approach the global political, economic and social problems of the past, present and future.

The program is based on the following blocks of topics:

  • The UN and its rivals,
  • Rising Powers and the World Order: The Case of China,
  • Changes and continuity in U.S. foreign policy,

Academic Insights Programmes: Medicine

  • Age - from 13 to 18 years,
  • The training period is 10 days.

A medical course is a great opportunity to learn the basics of the world of medical care, from its incredible history to industry-changing technologies. Students are encouraged to take their place among the next generation of general practitioners, surgeons, researchers, emergency physicians, geneticists and pharmacists by exploring a huge range of professions in the field.  The program, which combines the work of experienced faculty from the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge with the prestigious colleges of the University of Sydney, provides a full-fledged insight into the possibilities of medicine around the world.

The basics on which the program is built:

Academic Insights Programmes: Psychology

An advanced pre-university psychology course allows students to explore some of the most interesting topics in this complex and interdisciplinary field, from behavioral genetics to social psychology. Psychologists explore intriguing questions such as: What makes you unique? What sets you apart from others? Academic Insights Programmes: Veterinary Studies

  • Age - from 13 to 18 years,
  • The training period is 10 days.

The pre-university course in veterinary medicine is designed to build on students' existing knowledge and understanding of sciences to introduce them to veterinary research and prepare them for a career in the field of animal work.

Composition of the program:

  • Life and evolution,
  • The structure and functions of animals,
  • Keeping animals,
  • Metabolic functions of animals and homeostasis,
  • Genetics and genomics,
  • Veterinary pathogenesis,
  • Animal nutrition,
  • Animal health, welfare and disease,
  • Nervous system.

These topics will be explored for 10 days: 35 hours of specialized lessons, thematic events and scientific excursions, a lot of entertainment and useful experience.

Accommodation, meals, prices

St Paul's College, on the campus of which the programs will be held, offers comfortable rooms in a residential building. Students will occupy single rooms, use shared bathrooms, living rooms, and self-study areas.

Residents of the boarding house are provided with three meals a day on a daily basis: breakfasts, lunches and dinners are served at the College Hall. Several times during their studies, students will visit the University of Sydney Dining Room for festive lunches.

Activities Summer School in Sydney

Children are offered an exciting program of activities, including a large-scale tour of Sydney: a harbor cruise, a sports tournament on Manly Beach and a themed detective evening "Murder in College".

The program also includes a full-day excursion to explore Sydney's iconic landmarks, including the Sydney Opera House, the Australian Museum and the Royal Botanic Gardens. Activities and excursions are led by a team of friendly mentors who are current students of the University of Sydney and city experts.

The school specializes in making students have a great time, so even on campus it offers them small collective events: movie nights, book discussions, board games and much more.

Facilities and equipment at Summer School in Sydney

The study area is ideally located for exploring the iconic sights of Sydney: the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Sydney Opera House, the Royal Botanic Gardens, the Australian Museum are a short drive from campus.

Classes will be held in modern classrooms with interactive whiteboards, events will be held in studios, halls and open areas on the territory.

The school provides students with a shuttle service to and from the city's international airport. They deliver new students at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

The nearest train station to the college is McDonaldtown, which is 14 minutes on foot or five minutes by car.

Admission dates and extra charges

Courses on the campus of St Paul's College in Sydney take place in January: from the 4th to the 14th. Daily schedule:

  • 08:00-09:00 – breakfast,
  • 09:00-11:30 – academic classes,
  • 11:30-13:30 – lunch,
  • 13:30-15:30 – academic classes,
  • 16:00-17:00 – a short tour of the city or free time,
  • 17:30-18:30 – dinner,
  • 19:00-21:00 – events on campus.

Classes are held only on weekdays, on Saturday or Sunday students will have a full-day excursion.

The cost of the program includes:

  • 10 nights accommodation at the Central College of the University of Sydney,
  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner at College Hall,
  • 35 hours of academic lessons with teachers from Oxford and Cambridge universities,
  • Transfer (according to the schedule),
  • Carefully designed teaching and lecture materials,
  • Mentoring program and access to support materials,
  • All excursions, including a formal dinner at the University of Sydney,
  • Graduation ceremony and certificate,
  • Written assessment of the teacher.

A change fee of £95 is possible

Enrolment process

The admission procedure is in several stages:

  • Filling out the online form: choosing a program, information about the participant and his parents,
  • Full or partial payment for the course (in the format of a deposit - 995 £),
  • Getting instructions on how to arrive on campus.

Perspectives

All alumni at the ceremonial evening at the end of the programs receive a certificate of participation confirming their academic success. A personal mentor will write a review to each of his pupils, assessing their progress.

Participants of last year's courses are already successful in university studies - real examples:

  • biology at the University of Vienna on exchange, postgraduate studies at the University of Munich,
  • computer science at Queen Mary University of London, working as a software engineer,
  • Faculty of Medicine, University of Sydney, work in gynaecology,
  • philosophy at the University of Edinburgh, work in the field of sustainable development.

All graduates graduated from specialized programs at the school, continuing to study the chosen field and achieving amazing results.

Entry requirements, how to apply, what is required to enrol

Future students must provide personal documents: passport, visa or residence permit, medical insurance. The level of English is important for the convenience of learning - students will need knowledge of at least B2 level. Applicants must meet the age criteria of the course: from 13 to 15 or from 16 to 18 years.

Scholarships Summer School in Sydney

Students in need of financial aid can apply for a scholarship – a maximum 100% reduction in program fees. All candidates are checked for academic performance and the need for material support. Only a small percentage of students receive such scholarships, as they are distributed by age group.

Students also have access to an essay competition program, according to the results of which the winners are awarded 100% scholarships to study at the University of Sydney or another institution of their choice. Outstanding participants who do not get a little points to victory have the opportunity to receive a partial reward.
