Description of Adcote School for Girls

  • Founded in: 1907
  • Students age: 4 to 18 years
  • The total number of students: 280 people (of them at the boarding house - 120 ).

Adcote School was founded in 1907 by the pioneering Amy Gough, whose vision was to provide excellent schooling for young women. Adcote School is an award-winning all-girls school based in the beautiful Shropshire countryside, just outside Shrewsbury. There are currently around 200 pupils, with around 50 boarders calling it home. There is an incredibly diverse boarding facilities where the girls make lifelong friends from all around the world.

Adcote School is located in a beautiful rural setting with a magnificent Grade I listed building. Adcote was originally a country house built for the Darby family and designed by the famous architect Norman Shaw RA. The 30 acres of beautifully landscaped parkland surrounding the school cannot be underestimated, not only as wonderful recreational space, with tennis and netball courts and a forest school site but also as a reminder of the school’s life story. These wonderful gardens provide an incredibly safe, secure, and idyllic backdrop to this historic school.

The school aims to inspire learners for their futures through high expectations and a supportive, caring environment which fosters personal pupil happiness and good relationships between all members of the school community including parents. Adcote helps to secure the core skills of confidence, leadership, engagement, achievement, and resilience so that students can thrive in the 21st century through our CLEAR learning programme. Thanks to this programme, in 2020 Adcote School achieved 70.3% A*-A in their A Level results, and 50.5% A*-A in their GCSE results.

Adcote School were the winners of the ISA Academic Excellence and Innovation Award 2019-20 and were finalists in the ISA Senior School of the Year 2020.

When is the best time to apply to UK schools, and what should be expected?

Ideally, start the application process when you feel ready. The unpredictability of recent times, like the 2020 pandemic, highlights the importance of feeling secure and prepared for such a significant step. Research the school's website, subscribe to newsletters, follow them on social media, and don’t hesitate to ask questions.

Educational process

The school uses modern technologies in the process of teaching its pupils. For example, using Google Workspace for Education, it provides girls with flexibility and accessibility in studying subjects, communicating with teachers, homework and research. Some lessons and workshops take place remotely using video recordings or live broadcasts, and homework can be found at any time in Google Classroom.

Foreign students have access to additional lessons in English - the ESL course. Depending on age, the number of classes will vary:

  • Grades 3-9: 1 hour per week of General English,
  • Grades 10-11: 4 hours per week (IGCSE English and Academic English support),
  • Grades 12-13: 3 hours per week (IELTS and Academic English support).

Primary School is an educational program for international students and contains educational blocks of 4-6 grades.

About the educational program: Younger schoolgirls study basic, fundamental school subjects (among them mathematics and English). They are provided with a large number of extra-curricular activities, entertainment and games. On the one hand, it does not allow students to get bored, does not "load" them ahead of time with a lot of knowledge and information. On the other hand, every leisure activity has a learning character and helps:

  • To learn new things;
  • To show their abilities and talents;
  • To practice their knowledge and skills in an informal, friendly environment.

Summer Camp, Summer Camp

  • Age - from 7 to 16 years,
  • The duration of training is one or two weeks.

The summer camp at Adcote School offers students from 7 to 16 years old an exciting pastime, new emotions and interests.

Students can choose the most suitable format of education: with accommodation in residence or only full-time stay on campus. Regardless of the choice, each girl is provided with three meals a day, a variety of activities and excursions.

Children will learn outdoors, participate in thematic events aimed at developing teamwork skills, independence, dexterity, communication and coordination, as well as build self-confidence and interest in the world around them. A variety of classes combine science and mathematics, languages and literature, history and art - all educational material is presented in an informal, playful setting.

Entertainment awaits camp participants not only on campus, but also off-campus: excursions to Liverpool, Oxford, London and other metropolises of England with sightseeing, visits to cultural and entertainment centers will diversify the summer holidays.

Accommodation, meals, prices

At Adcote School we welcome boarders from the age of 9 years old through to the Sixth Form for international students, who are housed both in the main building and in purpose built boarding houses. Norman House is for girls aged 9-16, and is based in the main building, offering some twin rooms, and some rooms with 3-4 beds for the younger girls. All rooms are bright and airy with desks for study. There are several common areas with kitchen facilities and seating areas for the girls to relax.

Aston Hall is a brand new built boarding house for our sixth form, with en-suite twin rooms (although there is space for one girl to a room). Rooms are modern and bright with dedicated workspaces, and there is a large common area with a TV and games console, and kitchen facilities.

We offer a safe, caring and disciplined environment in a school where privacy and independence are respected, and where the girls can enjoy companionship, fun and a lively programme of boarding activities.

All of our pupils eat school meals in the Darby Restaurant. There are three sittings for lunch. First sitting is for Junior pupils, with two later sittings for Senior girls. Vegetarians and children with food allergies or those who are on special diets are fully catered for. The catering team at Adcote produce a wide variety of nutritional food sourced from local suppliers wherever possible.
