Mr Steven Allen

Fyling Hall School Principal

How long have you been involved in secondary education?

I've been working in secondary education for over 25 years. My journey began at Fyling Hall School where I was a student and served as a warden in my final year. After graduating, I returned to the school's sports faculty and became the head of the department in 2008, teaching business, design technology, and graphics. Since 2010, I've taken on roles in student management and administration, eventually becoming the director in 2014.

What makes British schools unique?

British schools stand out for their rich traditions, deep-rooted appreciation of history, and enduring values. This is particularly true for Fyling Hall School, which is nearing its centenary. Our foundational ethos, emphasizing a nurturing and healthy environment for schooling in England, remains as true today as it was at our inception.

Why do parents highly value UK primary and secondary schools?

It’s the combination of our longstanding traditions and core values that parents find appealing. British boarding schools, in particular, are known for fostering a well-rounded set of skills and interests in students. We believe that education should extend beyond textbooks and academic programs to encompass life lessons. Our commitment to traditional values like manners, honesty, and mutual respect is key. As one of our founding students aptly stated, the education that teaches us to live and respect one another is what truly matters.

How are boarding schools in the UK ranked, and how much trust should be placed in these rankings?

Rankings are just one tool for selecting the right school. We advocate for a more personalized approach. It's important to engage with staff, students, and other parents to make an informed decision, rather than relying solely on rankings.

What are key considerations when choosing a school in the UK?

Parents should identify their priorities and seek those qualities in prospective schools. At Fyling Hall, we take a holistic approach, fostering a supportive environment that encourages not just academic excellence but also achievements in sports, arts, music, and more. Our location in North York Moors National Park offers a serene and safe learning environment. We balance modern amenities with a close-knit community feel.

When is the best time to apply to UK schools, and what should be expected?

Ideally, start the application process when you feel ready. The unpredictability of recent times, like the 2020 pandemic, highlights the importance of feeling secure and prepared for such a significant step. Research the school's website, subscribe to newsletters, follow them on social media, and don’t hesitate to ask questions.

What subjects are currently popular among students?

Subjects like mathematics, sciences, English language and literature, languages, geography, and history are highly sought after, especially by Russell Group universities. At Fyling Hall, we also offer strong programs in business studies, ICT, drama, music, fine arts, and sports, and support students who choose to specialize in these areas.

Do all schools aspire to be top-ranked?

While every school desires to be recognized as the best, the definition of “the best” varies.

How has COVID-19 impacted student enrollment, and how have schools adapted?

The pandemic has certainly had an impact, but at Fyling Hall, we're proud to have had no infections since returning to in-person classes. We implemented strict safety measures and maintained smaller, isolated class groups. Despite some fluctuations, our student numbers have remained fairly stable.

How accessible are scholarships for talented students, and what are the typical offerings?

At Fyling Hall, we strive to keep tuition affordable and transparent. Scholarships are available for students excelling in academics, sports, music, or drama, typically covering about 10% of tuition costs. We also offer financial assistance to families in need.

At what age do international students typically enroll in UK schools?

International students often join UK schools around Grades 9-10 after completing GCSE, allowing them time to adapt before progressing to A-levels.

Do all schools offer ESL programs, and how crucial are they?

While I can't speak for all schools, at Fyling Hall, we consider ESL essential. A high level of English ensures academic success and full integration into the school community. The number of ESL lessons varies, but they are a staple in the schedules of our international students.

What additional expenses should parents plan for?

We aim for fee transparency at Fyling Hall, but additional costs include uniforms, travel, some extracurricular activities, and trips. During the pandemic, most outings have been local, but in normal times, we coordinate with parents regarding the financial aspects of more extensive excursions.

Beyond academic results, what do parents consider when choosing a school?

Pastoral care is a crucial factor, as it supports students' emotional and psychological well-being. This includes guardianship, mentorship, and fostering resilience and positive values. Since 1923, Fyling Hall has emphasized the importance of pastoral care, adhering to our motto: "The days that make us happy make us wise."

What advice would you offer to applicants before joining a British school?

Focus on your child's needs. At Fyling Hall, we prioritize this daily. Ensure that the school aligns with your child's requirements and aspirations.
