Description of Oakham Private School

  • Established: in 1584
  • Location: Oakham, Leicestershire, United Kingdom
  • The age of the students: 10-18 years (+ preparatory classes)
  • Total number of students: 1079 people, including 10% of foreign students (at the boarding house 595 people)
  • Type of studying: mixed
  • Accommodation type: full board (residence).

Oakham School is one of the oldest boarding schools in the UK: like many other educational institutions, originally (founded in 1584), it was designed exclusively for boys, but today the school practices mixed studying at all stages. By the way, the school is considered to be one of the first in the country, where girls of all ages were admitted to the educational courses!

The institution is in the TOP-100 of British schools, and according to the results of the program IB ranks 9th in the country. Approximately 11-12 graduates each year become students of Oxford and Cambridge, many choose for themselves the prestigious universities Russel Group:

  • Newcastle;
  • Nottingham;
  • Leeds;
  • Birmingham;
  • UCL;
  • Durham.

The school is conveniently located just a couple of hours drive from London and Heathrow Airport, to Gatwick International Airport can be reached in about 3 hours. The town of Oakham is very quiet, calm, friendly with lots of green gardens and lawns: it is the pastoral corner of England, where the child will not be distracted from the lessons. Within the transport accessibility there are many interesting and historic cities of England - Birmingham, Cambridge, Leicester, Nottingham, Bristol - in the free hours of students waiting for exciting excursions and walks.

About 10-12% of students are foreign: they represent more than 30 countries and nationalities. According to statistics, foreign students usually go to school at 11, 13 and 16 years.

There are 3 main departments in the school:

  • Junior classes
  • High school
  • Senior grades.

Almost every teacher except work in his field is engaged as a curator: he regularly meets with his students, helps them to solve various problems, to make an optimal curriculum, organizes leisure and entertainment programs. Together with the mentor, children can play sports or art, go to the cinema or theater, take part in a charity event or go on an excursion.

Director of International Admissions at Oswestry School

At what age do foreign students usually enter schools in the UK?

Usually 13 years old or even earlier. It is possible at 16, there are also many of them, but if you do not know English well enough by this age, it may be too late.
