Sarah Hicklin

Director of International Admissions at Oswestry School

How long have you been working in secondary education?

For 14 years already.

What makes British schools special? Why are they chosen by parents from all over the world for their children?

Schools in the UK continue to be the gold standard of education and offer the highest quality teaching.

UK boarding school rankings: what criteria are used to compile it? How accurate is it today?

The rankings usually include government exam scores, so it is useful to consider them when selecting the best, academically strong schools. However, I believe that even leadership schools cannot be perfect for everyone.

What are the most important questions to consider when looking for a school in the UK?

Parents are primarily looking for a school where their child will be happy!

When is the best time to apply to British schools? What should students prepare for?

The earlier the better! If you are choosing a prestigious school, be prepared for a rather rigorous admission process: elite schools choose students, not the other way around.

What subjects have been most commonly chosen in recent years?

In principle, the choice remains the same: the economy, business, science are on the rise. It's a shame that interest in art and foreign languages is declining.

Does every school strive to be ranked among the best?

Everyone wants to be the best, this is a fact, but ratings, like other statistics, should not always be trusted, and therefore official tables are not so priority for many.

How has COVID-19 affected student enrollment? How do schools help students during this time?

At Oswestry School we were very lucky: only those students were upset who could not return in January after the holidays (when the lockdown was announced). Those who stayed at the boarding house had a great time: we managed to create a sealed and safe "bubble" so that the children could socialize with friends, study and have fun.

Is it difficult for a talented student to get a scholarship? What are the usual discounts offered by schools in Britain?

A real talent will always be able to find a suitable place to study, a qualified, experienced consultant will always suggest a good school. Discounts can be up to 50%, but even if you fail to win a scholarship, a good school will raise the prestige of your diploma (not to mention that it will develop and hone your talents).

At what age do foreign students usually enter schools in the UK?

Usually 13 years old or even earlier. It is possible at 16, there are also many of them, but if you do not know English well enough by this age, it may be too late.

Does every school offer ESL language support to foreign students? How important is it?

No, not all schools, that is why it is so important to work with an educational consultant - he will advise the institution where this course is.

How much do parents usually spend per year apart from school and living fees?

If the child stays on campus for the holidays, this is usually paid separately, plus pocket money, plus additional EAL (English as a foreign language) classes. In total, approximately £ 150-750 per term.

What to consider when choosing a school, besides academic success?

Safety and care on campus.

What advice can you give to potential applicants to British schools and why?

Decide what is the highest priority for you: a happy child, active communication and friendship with peers, the realization of creative or academic potential? Don't get hung up on ratings! Personally, I would recommend a school away from big cities so that children are less distracted.
