Description of Oxford Tutorial College (Oxford Sixth Form College)

  • Location: Oxford, UK
  • Established: in 1988
  • Educational programs: GCSE, A-level, BTEC, academic English courses, preparation for IELTS, University Pathway, special programs to prepare for the retake of exams
  • Students age: 15+ years
  • Total number of students: 170 people
  • Accommodation type: host family or residence (boarding house).

Oxford Tutorial College deservedly enjoys an excellent reputation among educational institutions specializing in preparing students for British universities. The private college Sixth Form was created by the Oxford Educational Foundation in 1988: its founders were five honorary trustees, including the director of the college. In 2010, the college passed under the management of the company ISIS Group, funded from the charitable foundation of Prince Charles, including - it allowed to open on campus effective summer and winter language schools, to conduct seasonal tours and combined programs.

Oxford Tutorial College accepts children from 15 to 18 years of age: the total number of students today reaches about 200 people, boys and girls are approximately equal (most of the students have already reached adulthood and study on programs for high school students). The first week in the college is dedicated to the adaptation of foreign students: they get acquainted with British cultural and national characteristics, learn the rules of safety and behavior, learn on the campus and in the house chosen for living, walk around Oxford.

In 2013, Oxford Tutorial College was ranked 30th among private schools in the country according to the results of final exams - for this young institution it is more than an impressive success. Accredited by the British Council, repeatedly received high marks from profile independent organizations for effective preparation before the university. The total number of graduates today already exceeds 30 thousand people - they continued their education in such prestigious universities as:

  • University College London
  • Cambridge
  • Edinburgh
  • Durham
  • Oxford
  • St Andrews and others .

Another valuable feature of the college is the opportunity to choose the most optimal educational form for each student:

  • 6 classroom lessons per subject weekly;
  • Weekly - 4 lessons in mini-groups for 7 people and 1 individual lesson;
  • 3 individual lessons per week for the chosen subject.

Many college teachers are graduates of Oxford: working in small classroom and giving each student personal attention, they are able to achieve really impressive results in teaching.

About 35% of Oxford Tutorial College students are foreign students: most are from Europe, the US, Russia, Thailand and China. Parents every trimester (at least once) receive a full-fledged school report: on the progress and behavior, successes and difficulties of the child, the recommendations of teachers and educators. If desired, parents or guardians can order controlled studying: once a week the student will perform homework under the supervision of a qualified teacher. This helps to fill the gaps in knowledge, to raise learning, to learn to concentrate and work more efficiently and carefully.

Each student at Oxford Tutorial College is given an individual approach and personal attention: for this purpose, a personal mentor is assigned. It is the mentor that first of all helps students to solve any problems (for household issues it is better to contact a special security officer available throughout the working day). If necessary, an independent consultant is invited for a confidential meeting with the student, his parents or guardian. Together with the tutor every week the student conducts individual lessons: learns to write and critically analyze essays, to discuss novel or philosophical treatise, to analyze ideas of fiction, etc. Such a technique is successfully used in Oxford University, so this preparation for students will be very useful.

Oxford Tutorial College works with professional medics on a partnership agreement: each incoming student must register with a British doctor, have a medical card with vaccinations, allergies and contraindications (it is recommended to register not only with the therapist, but also with an ophthalmologist and dentist). Usually, medical services for students are free of charge (they go through insurance, including hospitalization, intensive care and return to their homeland).

When is the best time to apply to British schools? What should students prepare for?

The earlier the better! If you are choosing a prestigious school, be prepared for a rather rigorous admission process: elite schools choose students, not the other way around.

The main British program is designed to prepare for the university, considered to be the most popular option for studying in the Sixth Form. The college offers two options A - level: a classic two-year and accelerated, designed for a year.

1. Two-year A-level course

Students themselves choose 1-4 disciplines, which they will study in depth and thoroughly, almost at the university level:

  • ICTs
  • Accounting
  • Foreign languages (Italian, German, Dutch, Arabic, Chinese, French, Japanese, Russian, Spanish, Turkish, Latin)
  • Ancient Greek
  • Music
  • Literary creation
  • English literature
  • History
  • English and Literature
  • Philosophy
  • Art and design
  • Ancient world history
  • Human biology
  • English
  • Religious studies
  • Business fundamentals
  • Media technology
  • Policy
  • Classical civilizations
  • The photo
  • Chemistry
  • Higher mathematics
  • Anthropology
  • Music technology
  • Information and culture
  • History of art
  • Textile
  • Geography
  • Biology
  • Psychology
  • Economy
  • Mathematics
  • Computer science
  • Sociology
  • Right
  • Filmmaking
  • Physics.

Students can choose any subjects from the list and combine them on their own. If there are not too many students enrolled in the discipline, classes in mini-groups and individual lessons are organized.

2. A-level annual course

The subjects for study are the same as in the standard biennial program - but the intensity of the studying is even higher: please soberly and objectively evaluate your chances and readiness to study hard. This option is for the most purposeful and ambitious students. Applicants must present very high marks in the GCSE certificate to prove their working capacity.

3. A-level (5 terms)

An additional option of the "golden British educational standard": study begins in January or April and lasts 5 terms. If there is a need, the student starts the course with individual lessons and only after the initial preparation joins the main group. This option is suitable for strong, gifted students, ready to learn the information as quickly as possible, or to students who need a quick and effective repetition of the program before the exams.

Classrooms on the A-level course are very small - for 6 people, on average 4 group lessons and 1 individual lesson per week are provided.

Review about Oxford Tutorial College (Oxford Sixth Form College)

Milena's mom
(08.06.2022)
At Oxford Sixth Form College, our daughter took the IGCSE program. We chose this option for two reasons. The first is that my daughter wanted to study at Oxford, and the second reason was that she wanted to study art and photography on the program. There were no problems with the first one, but the photos as an object on the IGCSE were difficult to find. In this captivity, Oxford Sixth Form fit perfectly. I would also like to note the teachers in these disciplines. They are truly professionals who are able to captivate with their subject. The choice of an educational institution has never been regretted. Of the minuses, I can note only a limited selection of additional circles, a section and a leisure program in general. But, since the main goal of the college is still to prepare foreign students for admission to universities, this is not particularly critical.

A decent level of education at an adequate price. Two years ago we moved with my family to London for work. We were choosing an option for my son, at that time he was finishing the 9th grade. We turned to Smapps for help in selecting options, and I want to say a big thank you to our manager Elena for the excellent work and high professionalism. They helped us with the preparation for the tests, gave us full information about the college, organized a visit. The college itself is quite modern, I immediately liked that the small size of the classes (7-8 people, in some subjects it is less). The child did not have any special problems with adaptation: the staff at the school is friendly, there is no harsh tense atmosphere in the school and classes. Good additional English training for international students. Now the child is in the last year of study, while he really likes the work of the curator, who helps with applying to universities. The child is controlled, not allowed to relax.

Did foundation (IFY) at Oxford Sixth Form. The college is located in the city itself on King Edward street, very close to the buildings of the University of Oxford. A small building with small classrooms. In general, as for the level of education, I can say that this is a standard college. The program helped me prepare for admission to the bachelor's degree in business management. The college has excellent tutors who help with filling out the application to UCAS. And in general, the staff is very good and friendly to students.
