Early Childhood Center

  • Age: 2-4
  • Cost: 11700

Marymount’s Early Childhood Center (from ages 2-4) implements a child centered, play-based pedagogy that explicitly teaches international values. The curriculum content reflects the latest research on early childhood development with input from leading experts, academics, teachers and parents.

The program is divided into four Learning Strands:

  • Independence and Interdependence

This strand focuses on developing social and emotional development.  This includes the development of an international mindset .

  • Communicating

This focuses on the development of a broad range of communication skills including language development, early literacy, early mathematics. ICT and computing, expressive arts and creativity.

  • Inquiring

This strand focuses on developing the skills of inquiry through exploring people and the world.

  • Healthy living and Physical Well-Being.

This strand focuses on developing a positive attitude to health, self- care and physical well-being.

Outdoor play and discovery learning is a fundamental part of our Early Childhood program. The Early Childhood Outdoor Classroom and garden provides our youngest students with a safe, educationally challenging learning environment which builds on their natural curiosity. The development of independence, self-confidence and social skills is made a priority.

The approach to teaching English in the early years is robust and based on recognised research into best practices in the current pedagogy in multilingual classrooms. We understand the educational value of building on the students’ mother tongue language through interlingual teaching and learning. The educators plan inquiry based play activities which are guided in English and tailored to support children as they grow towards becoming confident and enthusiastic English speakers.

Elementary school

  • Age: 5+
  • Language of instruction: English
  • Cost: from 14800 - 17800 € per year.

Marymount's Elementary School program for Kindergarten and Grades 1-5 combines core content areas, such as literacy, math, science, and social studies, with enrichment subjects like music, computer, art, library, religion, physical education, and information technology classes. In this way, the program provides our students with a well-balanced, developmentally appropriate set of experiences that promote creative thinking, support curiosity about learning, and develop global awareness.

Kindergarten is housed in the Elementary School Building and the academic program follows the Early Childhood Program with the addition of classes in Religion and Technology. Kindergarten students have access to the Elementary School's Library, Music Room and Computer Lab as well as their own Kindergarten Playground.

The language of instruction is English for all classes apart from those associated with our Italian language program. Students experience the beauty and historical significance of Rome and Italy through field trips and cultural studies at each grade level. They also celebrate the cultural diversity represented by our students and teachers during monthly assemblies and a bi-annual International Project in which children “travel” around the world to learn about different cultures and customs.

Teaching is based on the best practices found around the world and encourages inquiry and critical thinking. Teachers carefully assess each child's development on an ongoing basis and provide an instructional program that equips children with the skills, concepts, and tools needed for continued learning. A low teacher-student ratio helps to support learning, as do our collaborative (English Language Learning) ELL and Learning Support programs.

Through the use of a positive response philosophy, teachers help to foster in all students the social skills of cooperation, assertion, responsibility, empathy, and self-control.

Field Trips are also an integral part of the curriculum.

Language Program

In the Elementary School students take Italian as a Second Language (Grades 1- 5). The foreign language department enhances cultural exchange and promotes better understanding of Italian culture through the study of a second language. It is dedicated to the individual development of each student in the pursuit of fluency in the language. The main objective of the department is to teach students to express themselves with clarity, orally and in writing in the target language and to foster an appreciation for the diversity of cultures and their contributions.

Students also have the opportunity to take Italian as a First Language in order to prepare for the Quinta Elementare Exam. This is a five-year course (Grades 1- 5) designed to prepare students for the Italian Fifth Grade exam, the elementary school certification required to enter Italian middle school. Students will be exposed to different literary genres. The emphasis will be placed on improving oral and writing abilities. The course is designed for students whose native language is Italian and they should be able to take external exams at the end of each year. Students will study Italian (spelling and grammar) according to the ministerial curriculum for each year. The lessons for 4th and 5th Grade students in Italian Mathematics and Science are built into the after-school program.
