Language Courses

  • Age – 16+
  • Duration – from 2 weeks;
  • The language of instruction is English.

Language course programs are designed for students who want to improve their English or are interested in improving their language proficiency for admission to a higher education institution or job search.

The college offers general and academic English courses at all levels, both full-time and part-time. The programmes are accredited by the British Council.

The college offers programs for different levels of English, from beginner to upper intermediate (CEFR A1-B2). Each of the courses offered covers four key language skills:

  • Speaking;
  • Letter;
  • Reading;
  • Listening.

Serious attention is paid to grammar, vocabulary and cultural aspects of the language; students will not only improve their English skills, but also gain confidence in communicating and applying English in real life.

Full-day programs include 13 hours of classroom instruction, including one-to-one tutoring and additional conversation lessons and English language workshops. Part-time programs vary in intensity: options with 3, 6 and 9 hours of classes weekly are available.

The main difference between this course and other General English courses is that the language assignments that students face are more academic in nature and will prepare them for the various modules of the exam:

  • Speaking

Students will take part in interactive communicative tasks in the format of role-playing games, discussions, debates and interviews, which will develop the ability to accurately use grammatical forms and specialized vocabulary in appropriate situations, master the management of discourse, hone pronunciation.

  • Listening

Students will have the opportunity to practice listening for general understanding and details from a variety of sources on a range of topics. Assignments will include taking notes, filling out forms, completing sentences, and collating information.

  • Reading

As part of the classes, students will be offered a number of texts to read with relevant tasks. This will help at the stage of preparation for the university, where you will have to read a lot: the course will help you learn how to work with long texts, including articles, reports, excerpts from academic sources. Students will have to perform tasks such as multiple juxtapositions, definitions of meaning, awareness of the coherence of the text and its understanding.

  • Letter

Improving academic writing skills is a vital part of success within higher education. It is expected that students will master formal English, which will help to learn correct and consistent work with the text, provide proper practice, develop the accuracy of writing, paying great attention to spelling and punctuation, structure and coherence of the text.

  • Grammar

Students will learn and repeat important structures: tenses, word order, question construction. They will be given the opportunity to actively practice the new structures in both written and oral speech through supervised practice, free communication activities and homework.

  • Vocabulary

Working on vocabulary replenishment, students will study specific areas of vocabulary related to academic topics and issues addressed in the course, as well as relevant phrases, features of word formation, idioms; great importance is also attached to pronunciation.

Accommodation, meals, prices

The issue of accommodation is an important factor in the learning experience: the right decision here will be one of the most important for expat students. The college board recommends that students reside within cardiff city limits or within a ten-mile radius.

The international team of the college is ready to assist in the search for comfortable and modern housing even before students arrive in the country: the college has entered into partnership agreements with housing suppliers offering excellent conditions for living, recreation and study, capable of satisfying any budget. This may refer to:

  • Private student dormitories;

The college has entered into partnership agreements with several operators of private dormitories for students, offering rooms of varying capacity, comfort and amenities. All students living in such dormitories have access to the student kitchen and rest rooms, laundry. As a rule, wireless Internet is available on site, and heating, water and lighting services are included in the price.

  • Family accommodation;

The international CAVC team can arrange homestay accommodation for its students. The college works with Hosts International, a British Council-registered company, a high-quality professional homestay accommodation provider that has been providing accommodation services for expat students since 1988.

The company has experience in accommodating younger pupils (16-17 years old) in host families for international students and has an extensive database of hosts who have experience in accommodating both individuals and groups: teenagers under the age of 18 living in the UK are by law children, these students may have additional needs in terms of social security and support.

Up to three students can live in one family, while for the entire period of stay each will be provided with a separate room equipped with the necessary furniture and amenities.

  • Rental housing for students over 18 years of age.

Students over 18 years of age can rent housing in the private sector. These options should be sought on open resources: as a rule, we are talking about cohabitation in student residences, in blocks, rooms or apartments designed for 3-5 people.

This accommodation option has a number of advantages: rent and cash are cheaper. Disadvantages include self-catering and additional transportation costs.

A list of accredited accommodation agencies can be requested from the college administration.

Students from the EU and other foreign countries (excluding British Commonwealth member states) must make a deposit for accommodation in order to book accommodation:

  • Pay the cost of training before enrollment in full;
  • Make a prepayment of £ 3000 per room;
  • Pay the remaining accommodation fee during the first semester.

Homestay accommodation will cost from £ 600 per month, including meals.

As a rule, renting housing in the private sector costs from 500 to 600 £ per month; utility bills can be included in this amount or paid separately.

In some cases, the optimal solution for short-term programs will be visitor visas, and in the case of learning English under a program lasting from 6 to 11 months, a short-term study visa is sufficient.
