Employees of the institution offer a high level of individual care for the child - the main goal is to ensure his safety in all respects. Children celebrate the family atmosphere at Bales, which makes them feel comfortable and ready to learn.

The main values of the school:

  • Respect
  • Humor
  • Energy
  • Persistence.

Bales is an independent school and Sixth Form College for children between 11 and 18 years of age that accepts British and international students. Most of the students are local, about 10% are foreigners. Students join Key Stage 3, Grades 7-9, GCSE courses in Grade 10 or 11, and A-Level courses in Grade 12 or 13.

Educational process

The guide meets each week to critically analyze student progress and develop an academic program. Primary school classes have two objectives: the development of subject knowledge and skills, as well as more general learning abilities.

The institution offers full coverage of the national curriculum in grades 7-9, with the opportunity to continue studying a range of GCSE subjects in grades 10 and 11. GCSE courses are based on the Edexcel curriculum with a combination of GCSE and IGCSE. Homework is also a key aspect of the learning process: children receive weekly homework in each subject according to an alternating calendar, this is recorded and monitored through the online learning portal. Teachers provide timely and instructive feedback on students' work to encourage further engagement and research.

The school uses Durham University's CEM system to conduct a process of monitoring each child's progress. Tests are completed at the moment the child enters school to ensure a learning profile. It illustrates the strengths and areas of development for each student, providing teachers and leadership staff with valuable information to assist each child in learning and development.

  • For grades 7-9, the Midys system is used,
  • For grades 10 and 11 , the Yellis system,
  • For Sixth Form (Grades 12 and 13), the Alis system.

The learning cycle for any class includes learning activities, experimenting, researching, and reflecting on experiences. Goal setting helps create a structure and vision of what the student would like to achieve. Bales students set goals based on their current knowledge and academic performance.

Final exams are held annually in June. Parents receive a grade letter each semester, a full written report at the end of the Easter semester, and parent evenings are held in mid-December and summer. Repeat classes are held during the holiday period for GCSE and A-level students.

Subjects taught:

  • Arts, painting and design,
  • Biology, business,
  • Chemistry, informatics,
  • Economics
  • English literature,
  • French, German, Spanish,
  • Geography, history,
  • Mathematics, physics.

Things to know about

The institution welcomes applications from children who have been identified as having additional educational needs (e.g., needs for speech, language, and communication, the help of an autism specialist, or special learning difficulties such as dyslexia). There are a number of employees specially educated in this area: for example, Mr. Mark Yersley is the acting senCo, and Ms. Monika Wojczyk is an educational psychologist who works on individual support for children as needed. The school works closely with families and relevant local authorities to ensure that every child with additional needs receives the support and guidance needed to succeed. SENCo and the Deputy Director ensure that highly qualified and experienced employees conduct education in such a way as to ensure that the requirements of the Educational Health Care Plan (EHCP) for the child are met.

Students wishing to progress to certain A-level subjects and university degrees must complete the relevant GCSE subjects. Mathematics, English and English literature are usually compulsory.

A continuous assessment program throughout the year with a focus on past exam preparation and exam technique will help students maximize their A-Level scores. Among the former students here were politicians, diplomats, BBC news reporters, leading experts in the field of medicine and business.

The institution accepts students with mixed abilities (with a minimum of 5 credits on the GCSE). All A-Level subject teachers conduct regular class tests on topics studied throughout the year. Formal mock exams are held in December and April to help with preparation for upcoming exams. This regular practice helps to build confidence, focuses the attention of each student on the practical use of the information received.

Throughout both years of sixth form training, faculty and other staff assist students both formally and informally in applying for summer jobs, in developing their UCAS applications, and in general career advice. The student may need at least the first year of A-level to achieve a good level of skills in the educational process, and the staff helps him with positivity, trying not to create artificial pressure. Staff are available throughout the day for one-on-one meetings with students who need additional support regarding homework – these conversations can eliminate possible delays in a student's work schedule.
