The International Year One

The program is a specially adapted first year bachelor course for international students. To participate in the program, you must meet academic requirements and a certain level of English language skills (if necessary, you can first increase the level of the language in special courses). The programs last 2 semesters and have two versions of the annual schedule: starting in January or September respectively. Studying is conducted in 6 different directions:

  • Academic English. Classes in English are intensive and include the development of professional skills in the main sections of linguistics. Students develop effective skills in reading and assimilating information, skills in literate and accurate written language, listening skills and fast fixing of information. In addition, the skills of effective participation in seminars and creative activities are actively developing, and the clarity and correctness of the presentation of their thoughts in English is sharpened.
  • Skills of career development. Much attention is paid to the development of career building skills. The process of studying at the university is inextricably linked with the process of employment and self-realization in the professional sphere, and therefore students have a unique opportunity from the first days of studying to receive comprehensive support in finding the most preferred specialization and the field of application of their talents.

Pre-Master's is a specially adapted pre-master's program for the University of Sussex, designed for international students, whose goal is to bring the university's requirements and the level of knowledge of applicants in line. Studying lasts 1 or 2 semesters (depending on the level of the English language) and begins three times a year - in January, May or September. For admission to the Pre-Master's it is necessary to have a certain level of English and a bachelor's / specialist's diploma (with good points). If necessary, the entrant can first pass a special course in English.

Studying is conducted in 4 directions:

Each educational program is carefully designed and includes various modules that allow the most complete disclosure of the topics needed for the chosen direction. Modules include:

  • Academic English. The module is devoted to the development of the following skills: academic writing, effective reading strategies, effective participation in seminars, skills in preparing and presenting presentations, listening and recording information from lectures. Also, the accuracy and clarity of the expression of thoughts in written and spoken language that are necessary for an effective learning process in the magistracy.
  • Skills of study at university and employment skills. This includes teaching students the skills of university education and the skills necessary for an effective job search process.
  • A complex of academic disciplines (including disciplines to choose from). ItcContains items that are needed to disclose all topics and questions of the chosen direction.

The studying is conducted through lectures, seminars, interactive seminars, teamwork and individual work. Teachers constantly monitor the progress of students and ensure that all the passed material was learned by them; for each difficult issue the student addresses directly to the teachers and receives exhaustive explanations.   • Approaches to media and film research. The module represents the study of media texts, technologies and audiences and their contribution to social life. It also examines the role of media influence in how they reflect or challenge the dominant ideologies of society.
  • Media-critical practice. The module introduces students to the narrative potential of photography and develops an understanding of the intended value, both in a still image, and in relation to its cultural and social consequences, by creating a photographic project.
  • Media stories. The module develops further knowledge and understanding of the forms and practices of the media in relation to political processes and documentary films as an effective genre for the narrative of "life".
  • Media technology in the context (only for the semester program). The module is aimed at developing a critical understanding of the role of technology in the media landscape from the Western point of view. 2. English language level for participation:

  • For entering the semester program, the language level is required: IELTS 6.0 (minimum 6.0 in the Writing section and 5.5 in the remaining sections)
  • For admission to the 2-semester program, the language level is required: IELTS 5.5 (minimum 5.5 for all sections)

3. Educational level: bachelor's degree / specialist diploma (minimum score GPA 4.0).

Accommodation, meals, prices

Housing stock is represented by 3500 rooms and apartments. Accommodation on the campus is guaranteed to all first-year students who have completed the application for accommodation and foreign students (for the entire period of studying). Family students and students with disabilities are offered separate apartments. Accommodation is available on self-service basis. Students with disabilities can take advantage of special offers, including cleaning and food delivery.

Activities University of Sussex

The University has several dozens of sports sections and clubs of interest. Students are offered many opportunities for physical and creative development. Also, students can choose from a wide range of excursions: bus tours in England, trips to neighboring Brighton, eco-tours in the hills of South Downs.

Daily routine

Students at the University of Sussex attend daily academic classes, carry out assignments for self-study. Evening time in the university is reserved for leisure.
