UCO is the only educational institution of this profile in Europe that awards advanced degrees. It is distinguished by an evidence-based approach to healthcare: clinical practice and research at the University College of Osteopathy have been at the forefront of this professional field for over 100 years.

Access to Higher Education Diploma

The higher education diploma course (osteopathic sciences and health) is a one-year continuing educational program.

The course is designed specifically, but not exclusively, for students with little or no scientific background, and is ideal for those looking to pursue a career in osteopathy or a related health care field but are not yet ready for a degree.

The program will help to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to continue studying osteopathy (or related subjects) at the undergraduate level. Particular attention is paid to biological and physical sciences, introduction to interaction with the patient and psychology. Other sections include English, Mathematics, Medical Ethics.

Accommodation, meals, prices

UCO is currently unable to provide their own housing, but prospective and current students have access to the Facebook posting group. The group provides students with the opportunity to ask for placement recommendations, advice, and to find other UCO students who are interested in finding an apartment. Students post information about available rooms to rent and find potential neighbors looking for an apartment in a specific area.

Activities University College of Osteopathy

UCO is a small, friendly community: students quickly get to know each other and form supportive connections.

The student community is diverse, from college graduates pursuing bachelor's degrees to mature professionals who are continuing their studies or looking to change careers. Students come from all over the UK and around the world. Experienced students provide an informal support network for newcomers to UCO.

Manus Sinistra, the UCO student society that seeks to provide a forum for more in-depth study and discussion of aspects of osteopathy, organizes an exciting annual program of events, guest speakers.

Students organize a number of informal clubs and societies: running clubs, sports teams, meditation groups and yoga classes.

Advantages

  • The University College of Osteopathy has assembled a team of experienced employees who are passionate about their work. Many teachers are former students who have made careers in professional practice and are ready to teach future osteopaths.
  • University College supports an evidence-based approach to teaching, patient care. Note the active research department, which is regularly published in journals, researchers speak at conferences around the world.
  • The University Hospital, located on nearby Southwark Bridge Road, provides about 35,000 visits per year, and in line with the philosophy that osteopathic health care should be available to everyone, most of the advice is free.
  • UCO has been awarded the right to award degrees: as part of this process, academic standards and management processes have been rigorously tested, and the university is extremely proud to be the only osteopathic institution in Europe to be awarded its own degrees and the title of a university college.

Facilities and equipment at University College of Osteopathy

Central to UCO's teaching strategy is the integration of e-learning resources to improve and guide student learning.

  1. Students have access to a wide range of research support materials, including the largest osteopathic library in Europe, the BONE virtual learning environment, and anatomical television. BONE is UCO's virtual learning environment, which provides students with secure access to a variety of learning materials that they can use in the classroom and for self-study: lecture commentary videos, e-books, discussion forums, video resources, copies of lecture materials, and related research papers.
  2. The university provides ergonomic computer classrooms, spaces for group, independent studies, technical practice rooms, and a lecture hall.
  3. The UCO Clinic is a purpose built modern building with 34 wards.
  4. The UCO library contains more than 9000 books, as well as a wide selection of electronic publications, DVDs, anatomical models, an extensive collection of osteopathic journals. The library team constantly monitors, replenishes stocks, guaranteeing the relevance of these resources, investing about £ 20,000 per year.

Located on Southwark Bridge Road, just a short walk from the UCO Borough High Street Educational Center, UCO welcomes more than 35,000 people annually. The clinic offers to students the opportunity to develop practical skills, to take care of patients in busy real life, providing an excellent foundation for professional practice, and allow it to offer treatment to the general public at a subsidized rate.

Entry requirements, how to apply, what is required to enrol

Requirements for admission to the bachelor's degree

  • Five GCSE (A * -C) exams including Math and English.
  • Three A-level exams (or equivalent qualifications) with BBC grades, which must include the chosen scientific discipline.
  • Students whose first language is not English must demonstrate a fluency in written and spoken English equivalent to an IELTS score of 6.5 or higher, with no individual component below 6.0.

Requirements for admission to the magistracy

  • Five GCSE (A * -C) exams including mathematics and English.
  • Three A-level exams with BBC grades (or equivalent qualifications) that include Biology, Science or Physical Education.
  • Students whose first language is not English must demonstrate a fluency in written, spoken English equivalent to an IELTS score of 6.5 or higher.

Candidates will be invited on the day of interviews and assessments, where they will participate in practical tasks, have the opportunity to speak with UCO staff and students.

Requirements for admission to PGCert

Applicants from abroad must be registered as a practicing osteopath with the appropriate regulatory body or association and must have appropriate professional liability insurance.

Students whose first language is not English must demonstrate fluency in written and spoken English that corresponds to an overall IELTS score of 7.0.

  • UCO students are eligible for discounted rates at the University of London South Bank Sports Academy, access to their fitness center and classes.
  • UCO students are eligible for free use of Microsoft Office 365 while studying. Students can install and run Office 365 programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) for free on five devices (including desktops, laptops, tablets and smartphones) and get 25 GB of cloud storage.
  • UCO students are eligible for a free Buzz Card that offers discounts and special offers at local restaurants, bars, shops, tourist attractions, and businesses.
  • UCO full-time students are eligible to apply for the student Oyster Card, which offers up to 30% discount on travel passes, trams and buses.
