The English Montessori School is a private co-educational school located in Madrid. The joint educational institution offers comprehensive education for girls and boys from 3 to 18 years old. The Montessori English School has been operating in the Spanish capital since 1973, offering education according to the British national plan, integrated with the Montessori approach. The latter lies in the concept of a special attitude towards students, including motivation for learning, self-discipline, the development of self-confidence, mutual respect and the desire to acquire new knowledge. Pupils of all ages will learn Spanish and humanities.

The English Montessori School (Tems) shows good results in the British national program, and then switches to the Spanish Bachillerato course, which allows the institution to get into TOP-10 best schools of the educational community in Madrid. In total, it includes about 200 secondary schools, whose students can attend universities in Spain, Britain and the United States.

TEMS is authorized by the Spanish Ministry of Education and is a part of the National Association of British Schools in Spain. The English Montessori School (Tems) is a part of the Cognita international educational network, with more than 70 points in Europe, Asia and Latin America. The institution has been operating on the international educational market since 2004.

Preschool education

Student education begins at Discovery House, a place for nursery and kindergarten. The curriculum for preschool education is based on the Montessori principle and the British system, therefore it is fully aimed at developing the social, emotional and personal skills of each student. The application of the Montessori method in the first years of study has a positive effect on the education of the child, since at this stage the following important areas are developed:

  • The study of phonetics, the development of fine motor skills, preparation for reading and writing
  • The development of basic social skills
  • Early immersion in English
  • Each child receives personal attention from the teacher.

The method used has repeatedly proved its effectiveness over a 40-year period of successful work.

Junior School

  • Age: 6-10 years old
  • Dates: September-July
  • Duration: 5 years
  • Cost: from 731 € to 843 € / year.

The curriculum of juniors (elementary grades) is designed for children from 2 to 6 years of study. The educational plan is divided into topics that affect the study of various areas of the British educational program, including science, history, drama, art, music. At the core of philosophy is the Montessori principle, encouraging the pursuit of personal experience and analytical thinking.

All subjects are taught in English, with the exception of Spanish and environmental subjects. Each study group is assigned to a curator who teaches disciplines in English and creates the conditions for the development of students - personal and corporate (the latter is facilitated by the teamwork of students to solve various educational problems). Pupils for whom English is not native, also get the opportunity to improve it by improving grammar or expanding vocabulary.

high school

At the stage of middle classes from the 7th to the 11th year of study, the children study the main disciplines that are part of the British education system. In the final, students take the IGCSE exams, confirming receipt of the first stage of secondary education. A sample list of areas of study looks like this:

  • English language and literature. Pupils of the Madrid School devote time to developing written skills, learning poetry and prose in the language, getting to know popular science books or articles in the media
  • Mathematics. It includes the study of 4 main areas of science - algebra, arithmetic, data processing, form and space. Additionally, students learn to apply a logical approach to solving mathematical problems
  • Sciences. Studying this range of subjects will allow students to develop mind flexibility and critical thinking, and gain decision-making skills in the technological world
  • History. Here, teens will plunge into different eras from medieval England to the fall of the Berlin Wall. Studying history will teach them to collect information using various sources, correctly interpret and systematize it
  • Geography. This section combines social sciences with natural sciences - students study the landscape, population, various places and the environment
  • Information and communication technology (ICT). Pupils are engaged in the development and management of websites, the creation of public information systems
  • Art. In this area, students first acquire basic drawing skills, and then move on to in-depth aspects of painting, sculpture, ceramics, collages
  • Physical Education. Here, students get acquainted with different sports from team to extreme
  • French. Studied as foreign for students from other countries
  • Music. It is taught only for 7-8 years of study: young people study the theory of music, musical notation, types of music.

Bachillerato ( Spanish Undergraduate )

  • Age: 15-17 years old

In high school TEMS - 12 and 13 years old - students are offered training in the Spanish undergraduate program Bachillerato with preparation for passing A-Levels - an exam in the British educational program with the study of the corresponding levels of this level (AS and A-Levels).

Spanish undergraduate studies for high school students include the study of the natural, humanities and social sciences. The training takes place in the format of a higher school - students are waiting for lectures, practical seminars, university tours and conversations with professors.

High school students of TEMS annually achieve high academic results, including when passing the entrance examinations to the university (PAU testing). School successes in the field of teaching are noted at the country level, so the institution has several relevant awards.

Summer camp

  • Age: 6-12 years old
  • Dates: June 30-July 13
  • Duration: 2 weeks.

The summer camp program at TEMS combines learning English for international students and playing sports, participating in educational seminars and recreational activities for students aged 6 to 12.

TEMS Summer School is 160 km from Madrid on the estate of La Casona de Somolinos en Guadalajara. Here, students are offered a 17th-century stone mansion with comfortable furnished rooms and bathrooms. The apartment house has a kitchen, dining room, internal rooms for seminars and events. On the territory near there is a football field, a volleyball court, an archery court, a golf course, an adventure park and a climbing wall.

For two weeks, students live in the house and eat at full board (three times a day). Departures for the territory are accompanied by staff.

The educational program of the summer school includes various classes and activities:

  • Language learning
  • Sports and tournament activities
  • Swimming every day
  • Adventure (passing the track with bridges, a climbing wall, archery, canoeing, surfing, ice-skating)
  • Traditional sports games
  • Archery Tag (a strategic sport where two teams score points for using bows and arrows)
  • Creative workshops
  • Ecological routes
  • Evening events (discos, hiking, star watching)
  • Daily entertaining leisure (shock of dances, radio, popular games and not only).

Accommodation, meals, prices

Since the English Montessori School belongs to international schools with a full-time education format, students are provided with full-board meals in half-board format. During the school day, students will receive a carefully balanced meal for lunch and a good snack. The menu is carefully developed by the school chefs, taking into account the age characteristics of students - a different diet is offered for students in junior, middle and senior classes.

Activities The English Montessori School

The English Montessori School has designed a rich extracurricular program for students, which is held 1-2 times a week after the main academic classes.

Sports and creative sections of additional activities are divided taking into account the interests of students of different ages:

  • Children's department: ballet, judo, tennis, Chinese and others
  • Junior school: ballet, football (including women), basketball, judo, art, drama and Chinese
  • High school: judo, art, drama, mathematics, Chinese.

Classes in all sections are conducted under the guidance of professionals, and at the end of the year, students show what they learned at reporting events. During the year, football, volleyball, basketball and athletics competitions are held for students of all classes.

During the year, the school also hosts a series of events that middle and high school students can join:

  • Ski trip. A week-long trip to the ski base is usually organized in the middle of the second semester. Schoolchildren are accompanied by teachers and ski instructors
  • Campaign This is a three-day outing in the surrounding mountains, accompanied by teachers. Participants of the trek are waiting for a game program in the fresh air, walks along routes and an introduction to astronomy
  • A visit to London. In February, students of the 8th year of study can go to the British capital for 5 days, where they will have a morning at Meoncross School, walk along London streets and attractions, including a visit to Harry Potter's studio
  • A trip to Mar Menor. Students of the 9th grade can spend 5 days in the famous center of water sports
  • Excursion to Gredos. This natural center invites schoolchildren of the 10th grade to visit - here they will find an educational program led by a biologist in English. Children will study rivers, ecosystems, rocks, lichen species, and food chains that exist in nature.

In addition to all the listed types of activities, TEMS students will have a sightseeing program around London, which includes visits to museums, zoos, local castles and monuments, a trip to the planetarium and other interesting places related to the curriculum of schoolchildren.

Facilities and equipment at The English Montessori School

The territory of the school includes two educational buildings on one campus: there are necessary buildings, playgrounds and sports grounds for juniors and senior students. For the youngest students, the school offers a separate educational building Discovery House: this is a unique space, built specifically for children from 3 to 6 years old, who are taught according to the Montessori method. Eco-friendly furniture is installed for students.

Admission dates and extra charges

The school year begins in September and ends in May-June. There are several vacations throughout the year.

To enter Tems, students must complete several steps:

  • Fill out the registration form on the school website
  • Visit the school: this can be done in the form of a private visit or during an open day, which is held during the school year - this will allow you to see teachers and students in action during the educational process
  • Take an individual interview with the admissions office of the school, with which you can verify the required level of candidates of different ages - from 1 to 13 grade.
