Student Life at US Universities: The Truth About Student Communities

Although student life, full of fun and noise, is very much glossed over in American movies, it does receive special attention in the United States. How do American students really spend their time?

Educational and extracurricular activities

American universities focus on providing useful leisure activities for students, but not quite as we see in the movies. On the contrary, America's universities have developed a high university culture that allows students to continue to develop outside the classroom, to acquire valuable knowledge and skills, to interact with peers, and to participate in volunteer programs and interest clubs.

For these reasons, about 50-100 or even more communities and interest clubs operate on the campus of any American university. Through community, students make friends with common interests and broaden their horizons - you have to admit, all of this makes for a richer student experience and brighter memories.

Active extracurricular activities are also important for employment. Companies need more than just in-depth knowledge for jobs, and in a highly competitive environment where all candidates have strong credentials, employers look at personal qualities, social skills, and creativity.

Working on campus is another way to gain valuable student experience. It is acceptable to combine work with study, and statistics show that working students learn as well or even better than non-working students. You can work on campuses as assistants, in residence halls, and in the cafeteria. Part-time work pays well: the average wage is about $12 to $14 an hour: working 2 hours a day, you can make about $500 a month. For example, 11,000 students work on the campuses of the prestigious ASU University. Many of them choose to work part-time at Starbucks - there are more than 20 on campus.
