St. John's Academy Vancouver (SJS) is an independent and non-religious school with IB programs for students from junior kindergarten to grade 12. The institution was founded in 1986 as the St. Andrew's School Society, which had fewer than 100 students in grades 3-10. Now SJS offers International Baccalaureate programs for all ages.

SJS is a preparatory school for university admission. There are university consultants here to help students master academic disciplines and student life.

Primary IB (PYP) (including kindergarten)

The International Baccalaureate Primary School (PYP) program is designed for students from junior kindergarten to grade 5. The focus is on the development of the child as a researcher. The overall structure of the program is designed to give students an academic base, develop their leadership and social qualities. IB Diploma Program

  • The training period is grades 11-12.

The Diploma Program is a complex, comprehensive two-year curriculum for students in grades 11 and 12. It allows you to get a qualification that is widely recognized by the world's leading universities.

Over the course of two years, students explore two to five languages, literature, business and art, science, and mathematics. Each student creates a research project on a topic he likes, which is handed over at the end of training. Thanks to a wide range of disciplines, students can "assemble" a schedule of subjects according to their interests.

Summer to Discover

  • Age – from 4 to 11 years
  • The training period is June 20-July 15.

The Summer to Discover summer program is a four-week interactive program for students from 4 to 11 years old. All pupils are divided into age groups for better mutual understanding and a friendly atmosphere. Students participate in sports, creative and scientific competitions, go to nature. Depending on the age, students can try diving, climbing, field strategy games.

Activities St. John's Academy Vancouver

Sports teams of the Academy compete in the Association of Independent Schools of Greater Vancouver, primary schools and in the Canadian Association CAIS, which shows the impressive level of training of young athletes.

The school conducts many trainings in various sports, including:

  • Cross-country running
  • Golf
  • Athletics.

National teams are both women's and men's, as well as joint.

Academic clubs invite students to participate in debates and the Duke of Edinburgh Award programme. Designed for students between the ages of 14 and 24, this award consists of three levels: Bronze, Silver or Gold. Students complete a personal programme of volunteering, physical education, skills and expedition activities, competing for one of three titles.

Throughout the year, the institution organizes numerous student fundraising events for children's hospitals, food banks and medical foundations.

The Academy has more than 70 hobby groups:

  • For grades 1-5: embroidery, board games, choir, textile design, etc.
  • For grades 6-12: business club, chess, school newspaper, jazz and rock bands, theatrical art, etc.

The SJS Outdoor Education Programme offers all students the opportunity to explore british Columbia's ocean, mountains, and forests. 

  • Trips for kindergarten groups every Friday
  • Grades 1-2 on one Friday monthly visit the camp "Yubileiny", go boating, climbing, shoot from the bow
  • Grade 3 students spend one night at Chekamus Camp on a Bird Farm
  • Grades 4-5 visit Lun Lake for two nights, explore the forest reserve, engage in orienteering
  • Students in grades 6-7 spend three nights camping in Hope with lots of activities
  • Grades 8-9 attend Stratcona for three nights, doing rowing, kayaking, rock climbing, and competing for the Duke of Edinburgh Award.
  • High school students go to Bamfield for three nights, where they participate in hiking, fishing, team building and scientific experiments.

Facilities and equipment at St. John's Academy Vancouver

The study building is located near Arbutus and Broadway, allowing students to explore the nearby attractions, architecture and natural beauties of the city.

The campus has prepared many classrooms for each age group, practical laboratories and several sports facilities, including the largest gym among all independent schools on the Lower Mainland. Many buildings have recently undergone renovations, so students can enjoy a modern campus, new equipment and modern technology.

The Arts Center promotes music, dance classes, meetings of student clubs of interest. Most of the events are also held here.

Admission dates and extra charges

The school year lasts from September to June and consists of three trimesters. Most courses are linear (annual) in nature, that is, unchanged for one year.

Entry requirements, how to apply, what is required to enrol

Due to the rigor of academic programs, all students must be fluent in both written and spoken English. The school in Vancouver does not provide additional language courses, but provides students with support from teachers.

For admission you will need:

  • Recent photo of the child, family photo
  • Birth certificate, status of foreign citizenship
  • School report cards for the last year or two
  • Recommendations from teachers of the previous place of study, family friends or other personalities not included in the family
  • Registration fee for filing an application in the amount of $ 300.

All applicants undergo a personal family interview to assess the child's well-being, language and academic knowledge.

Application Deadline:

  • Kindergarten groups: November 1
  • Grades 1-4: November 15
  • Grade 11: December 1.
