Shenandoah University is a private, nationally recognized university. Along with five other institutions of higher education, it is part of the United Methodist Church of Virginia.

The history of the institution began in 1875, when Shenandoah High School was founded in Dayton. Over the next 85 years, it changed its name six times, and in 1960 moved to Winchester with its current name. The status of the university was obtained in 1991.

In six specialized schools of the educational institution, you can get a bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees. Representatives of many countries come to the campuses of Shenandoah University for high-quality education and competitive skills - the total number of students is about 4000 future specialists. Coupled with accredited higher education programs, the university offers modern approaches to learning, the latest equipment and a diverse student life focused on the personal and professional growth of its pupils.

Accommodation, meals, prices

The university has nine residences, accommodating students depending on their level of education.

Housing for first-year students:

First-year students live mainly in double rooms and use shared showers.

Second-year students, masters and doctoral students are accommodated in the following buildings:

  • East Campus Commons – double rooms with private showers, shared kitchens and living rooms,
  • Edward Residential Village — rooms with private bathrooms,
  • Romine Living Center – single and double rooms with private showers,
  • The Village Apartments are four-bedroom apartments with two bathrooms, a living room and a kitchen, an outdoor barbecue area,
  • Vaden Campus Commons – double rooms with bathrooms, shared kitchens and grill areas, fitness room and swimming pool,
  • Solenberger Hall is a single, double and quadruple apartment/studio with all amenities.

In each building next door to the students, university staff live, taking care of the order and safety of each pupil.

Residential buildings are located on or near campus - a few miles from Winchester. For convenience, students are allowed to have a private car and park it on the campus (for an additional fee).

To be accommodated in one of the residences, students need to draw up a meal plan: they include from 10 to 15 meals per week, up to 50 meals per month. Students have the opportunity to purchase meals à la carte and in free mode, when visiting the dining room.

Activities Shenandoah University

Thanks to 22 men's and women's sports teams, more than  90 student clubs  and organizations, students can develop their interests and lead an active social  life on campus.  

Shenandoah University conducts group, individual educatioin and competitions in the following sports:

The Shenandoah Conservatory is home to more than 20 instrumental, choral and dance ensembles that organize many performances each year. Students participate in events not only on campus, but also at the city's venues.  Some of the musical groups are:

  • Wind instruments,
  • Big Band Studio,
  • Dance Ensemble,
  • Conservatory Choir,
  • Symphony orchestra,

Students can develop their skills in theatrical, performing and visual arts by participating in thematic communities and performances. Every year, more than 300 events with the participation of students are organized on the campuses of the university.

Facilities and equipment at Shenandoah University

The university is headquartered in Winchester, offices in the North Shenandoah Valley and Northern Virginia, and campuses in Winchester, Leesburg, Fairfax, and Bluemont. The proximity to Washington and Baltimore allows students to explore metropolises, take advantage of sports opportunities in any of the four seasons, explore the sights and immerse themselves in the cultural life of the locals.

Most of the learning areas are located in Winchester:

  • Founded in 1960, the main campus is home to all undergraduate students and many graduate programs. It has a vibrant residential campus atmosphere, sports and arts events are held, and most of the academic classes take place,
  • The Health Professions Building, founded in 1996, is located on the grounds of the Medical Center Valley Health Campus. The building organizes the work of the Bernard J. Smith School of Pharmacy. Dunn and Physician Assistant, Occupational Therapy, and Physical Therapy Programs of the School of Health Professions. 
  • Founded in 1997, the James L. Bowman Building houses the School of Education and Leadership,
  • The John Kerr Building was purchased by the university in 1982 for just $10. In 1983, Shenandoah began an $850,000 restoration project to save the building.  Currently, there is the Academy of Arts of the Shenandoah Conservatory, which is equipped with concert halls, a chapel, performance halls, an outdoor amphitheater,
  • The Feltner Building is located in the Winchester Walking Mall and contains administrative offices, an alumni assistance department.

Founded in 2001, Scholar Plaza in Leesburg is a place to study graduate programs in business, education, leadership, nursing, and other health specializations. The hull is located in the historic developing neighborhood of Loudon County, Virginia, just 35 miles from Washington. 

In Fairfax, Virginia, a number of medical programs are offered through a partnership agreement with Inova.

Founded in 2013, the Cool Spring River campus is a 195-acre conservation area along the Shenandoah River. This campus serves as an outdoor classroom, a recreational space for students, and a living laboratory for history and environmental studies programs.

Each educational area is equipped with modern classrooms, recreation areas, cafeterias, specialized laboratories and many other premises. The university owns a large library, which stores paper and electronic publications, has access to the Internet and computers.

Admission dates and extra charges

Important stages of the academic year:

  • Autumn semester: August-December,
  • Winter session: January,
  • Spring semester: January-May,
  • Summer session: May-August.

Not all students study throughout the year, as some programs have individual dates.

Classes are organized on weekdays, and weekends and holidays are devoted to recreation and excursions.

Enrolment process

You can apply for admission to any of the specialties and levels of education using an online application. The prospective student should fill out a questionnaire, provide documents and pay registration fees. At the invitation received further from the admissions committee, the applicant arrives on campus for an interview or audition, and then books accommodation on campus and begins education.

Perspectives

University staff help students at every stage of their studies, including finding an internship or their first job. Thanks to their help and competitive knowledge gained during the program, graduates are employed or move on to the next educational stage almost immediately after graduation.

Entry requirements, how to apply, what is required to enrol

Music and medicine programs have special requirements for new students. Other specializations will require the following data from foreign candidates wishing to study for a bachelor's degree:

  • Certificate of complete secondary education and official transcripts,
  • Certificate confirming the level of English: IELTS (from 6.5), TOEFL (from 79), PTE (from 53) or equivalent.

Future masters and doctors of science must provide the following documents:

  • Personal documents: passport, health insurance, visa or residence permit,
  • Bachelor's / Master's degree depending on the chosen level of education,
  • Unofficial transcripts from all institutions where the candidate was previously educated,
  • Resume
  • Essay on future plans, motivation and goals for education,
  • A letter of recommendation from a supervisor or employer,
  • Certificate confirming the level of English: IELTS (from 6.5), TOEFL (from 79), PTE (from 53) or equivalent.

Scholarships Shenandoah University

Undergraduate students have the opportunity to apply for grants and financial assistance to cover part of the cost of tuition. Scholarships are awarded to students of master's and doctoral programs. Among the scholarship awards:
