Shapwick Private School is located in the tranquil and scenic countryside of Somerset, near the coast. Shapwick specializes in supporting boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 19, whose developmental characteristics (dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia) negatively affect learning. A team of teachers, speech therapists, and occupational therapists work with small groups of 8 people and individually.

Being one of the first specialized schools for students with learning difficulties, the school is proud of the experience of its teachers in understanding the individual needs of students, helping them grow into confident, qualified, happy adults who are ready to move on to the next stage of their lives.

Students receive education in accordance with the National Curriculum, which is amended according to the individual development path. The curriculum includes humanities, major subjects, drama, games, music, physical education, grammar, score, computer technology. Speech, language, occupational therapy is carried out constantly.

Shapwick Senior from 13 to 16 years old from £ 7194.

Pupils access the national curriculum with a normal range of subjects, and then choose GCSE at the end of the 9th year. Students can choose either IGCSE or ASDAN courses. The study of computer technology is built into the curriculum with a focus on intercollegiate skills.

Shapwick Sixth Form from 17 to 18 years from £ 6072

Studying at Sixth Form will allow students to reach their full potential by mastering the skills and qualifications necessary to gain access to higher education, to get a job. The school has partnership agreements with Bridgwater & Taunton College, Strode College, in which Shapwick graduates continue their education.

Accommodation, meals, prices

Permanent boarders live in school all the time, including weekends. Part-time students can go home for the weekend, visit friends on weekends. The school also offers options for daytime stays, the ability to spend the night on Shapwick grounds on selected nights.

The school offers accommodation in 4 residences:

  • Houses - small pensions, which are managed as family houses. Each of them has its own character and is managed by experienced and caring "parents" -residents.
  • Manor is a home for boys on the first and second floor of the estate on the main campus of the school. The residence is equipped with spacious bedrooms, a comfortable lounge where boys love to watch TV.
  • Lakes is a Georgian-style house for boys: it has been renovated, finished, including new bathrooms. The house is equipped with a computer, gym, game room, common kitchen and a large area.
  • Greystone Cottage is a girls' residence located opposite the Shapwick campus. The house boasts a large living room with oak ceilings, a new shared kitchen, spacious bedrooms. All female students in grades 9-14 live in Greystone, and the old part of the residence with home furnishings is intended for female students of the sixth grade.

Activities Shapwick Private School

  • Every day, after school, the school offers optional classes in several areas: art, photography, robotics, cooking, crafts, netball, media studies, gardening, bird watching, walking, instrumental lessons, music, etc.
  • School football, cricket clubs hold home games, martial arts competitions. Shapwick has a long tradition of nurturing students ’sports talents — many graduates have continued their sports career. High school students can choose to study a BTEC professional certificate in sport, which is equivalent to two GCSE qualifications.
  • Shapwick School regularly conducts educational trips, excursions to Bath, Dorchester, Wales, Glastonbury Abbey, Swindon Steam Railway Museum , Ashford beverage factory.

Advantages

  • Shapwick is focused on working with stuednts with specific learning difficulties (SpLD). The most common of these is dyslexia - difficulty reading. The school supports students with dyspraxia - motor difficulties, dyscalculia - the complexity of performing mathematical calculations.
  • Over 75% of students in past issues achieved or exceeded their projected grades in all subjects, while 80% of students achieved their math targets, 43% in English.
  • Individual educational program meets the needs of each student, maximizes its opportunities for success.

Shapwick is equipped with an impressive gymnasium, a tennis court, and a large playing field surrounds the school campus. Pupils also regularly attend the additional college of additional education in order to enjoy sports and swimming lessons in the local pool.

Entry requirements, how to apply, what is required to enrol

Shapwick accepts students between the ages of 8 and 19 with some learning difficulties, provided that the educational psychologist agrees that they have at least average potential. The school does not accept students with emotional and behavioral problems.

Future students spend 3 days (+2 nights if they plan to stay at school), attend classes, have an interview with teachers, psychologists, and medical specialists.

The award of the Duke of Edinburgh is awarded to students who have shown themselves in 4 areas: research, physical activity, the development of creative skills, volunteering.
