Description of Brookfield College

  • Location: Tralee, Ireland
  • Students age: 15 to 18 years
  • Study programs: High School Program
  • Language of studying: English
  • Duration of the course: academic year, from September to May.

Brookfield College was founded in 1988 and from the very beginning offered students primarily a program for obtaining a Leaving Certificate, an Irish secondary education certificate that gives an opportunity to study at the university, that is, it was aimed at graduating (Senior Cycle). Today, the school studies about 110 students, most of them - citizens of Ireland and the UK (especially its northern part).

The college is located in the small Irish town of Tralee (population of approximately 24,000 people), in the county of Kerry in the south-west of the country. It is dominated by a temperate marine climate with an abundance of fresh breezes and a fairly high amount of precipitation throughout the year: The surrounding nature is very picturesque, peaceful, calm. Tralee, despite its very modest size, is considered to be one of the brightest tourist centers in Ireland: there are many museums, the Irish National Folklore Theater with regular performances, a large indoor Aquatic Center with a mini-golf course. The city is surrounded by green forest thickets, spacious fields, parks for walks and nature reserves with untouched animals and flora.

Foreign students can enroll at Brookfield College from the age of 15 (from the 12th to 13th grades of the general education school, the graduation classes in the Irish educational system). The entire educational process and the achievements of students are monitored regularly: they pass intermediate tests and control, semester exams. Before the final tests they will have to pass the Pre Leaving Certificate Exam: it shows how well the basic aspects of the school curriculum are mastered and how much the student is ready to receive a valuable diploma. All results of tests and examinations are reported to the custodians or parents by fax or e-mail - the family is always aware of the progress of their child. Each student works with a personal mentor: they meet after each assessment of knowledge and verification and discuss the difficulties that have arisen, determine the path for further education, the possibility of solving problems.

The purpose of the High School Program is to enable children of different nationalities and backgrounds to receive a quality education, to teach them to perceive a different point of view and someone else's opinion, to cultivate tolerance and respect for others. Students become more friendly and tolerant, better understand intercultural processes throughout the world and are ready for life in the modern international community. The program is selective: for admission to the course the child must demonstrate a sufficiently high level of knowledge, independence and perseverance in order to meet the high standards of the Royal School Cavan. Lessons are usually held in the morning, from 8:55 to 16:05, additional lessons last until 5:30 pm (breaks are provided). Children are engaged on weekdays (from Monday to Friday), 1 lesson lasts 35-40 minutes.

Behavior of the student is watched by the host family, in whose house he lives during studying, as well as his local curator, school teachers and educators. General uniform in the school is absent, like the official religion: children are accepted regardless of nationality, religion, origin and colour.

The Transition Year program allows you to adapt to a new educational, cultural and academic environment, to significantly improve the level of the English language, to deepen and update knowledge on the core subjects of the curriculum. After passing the Transition Year, the student will be ready to study at a foreign school, college or university at the level of native speakers.
