San Diego State University, San Diego (Residential and Homestay) is the third oldest university in California and the largest university in the San Diego region, conducting summer courses for students from 10 to 17 years old. Students have access to an intensive English language course, which includes a large-scale entertainment program with field trips and activities on campus. Among the students are representatives of different nationalities who come to study from Russia, Italy, Brazil, Israel, Japan and other countries.

English Course (Residential/Homestay)

The English course at San Diego State University includes intensive classes in groups of up to 16 people, individual lessons as needed, an extensive program of activities and field trips, and two types of accommodation. Students are divided into groups, effectively learning the language in groups that suit them: from beginner to fluent level. Classes are taught by native English speakers, so the educational material is absorbed easily and quickly. The number of lessons is optimal for the load during the summer holidays - 15 hours a week, they take place both in classrooms and outdoors.

Within a few weeks, students will be able to explore the sights of San Diego, relax on the beach, go to Los Angeles and try their hand at surfing. On campus, they will have access to various parties and theme nights, sports games and creative competitions.

Accommodation, meals, prices

Two options are available for accommodation: accommodation in a residence or a host family.

The residence offers comfortable conditions:

  • Triple or quadruple rooms,
  • Shared bathrooms and toilets, but separate for women and men. One bathroom is used by a maximum of five residents.

Meals are provided according to a clear schedule:

  • Breakfast: 07:30-09:00,
  • Lunch: 12:30-13:30,
  • Dinner: 17:30-19:00.

In case of early notification, the student will have access to an individual nutrition plan containing only those products that he can use depending on medical and dietary indications. A daily menu has been prepared for all residents, including dishes for vegetarians.

Homestay accommodation is a great option for the youngest students who are not yet ready for independent living, which the residence offers. Caring and experienced families will provide the student with a double or triple room with a work area, three meals a day and comprehensive assistance. Lunches are provided in the form of packed lunches that can be taken to school. The experience of living in this format will help international students learn about the culture of local residents, regularly practice in language skills and feel comfortable away from home.

Activities San Diego State University Summer School (Residential and Homestay)

The curriculum includes a lot of entertainment:

  • A visit to the beach and Belmont Park,
  • Trips to the San Diego Zoo and Balboa Park,
  • Visit to the USS Midway Museum.

The longer a student's education lasts, the more places and attractions they will be able to explore. The two-week program includes two full-day excursions and six trips for several hours.

For an additional fee, each student has the opportunity to attend six hours of surfing lessons per week, equipment and transportation from the school are provided by Pacific Beach. A tour of Los Angeles with local accommodation is also provided for a surcharge.

After lessons, parties are regularly held on campus, themed karaoke nights, group readings, and film screenings. Entertainment and interesting activities are included in the schedule for each day.

The education  will take place on the campus of San Diego State University. Ancient buildings and modern classrooms will be available on all days of study, for use by students are open:

  • Playgrounds for games and events, where theme nights, discos, conversation courses are held,
  • Outdoor swimming pool in the residence,
  • Fields for team sports and individual education,
  • Recreation areas with table tennis,
  • Patio – a courtyard for walking, socializing and relaxing,
  • Computer class.

Wired internet access and Wi-Fi are available on campus.

Thanks to the excellent urban transport system, traveling around San Diego will not be difficult: students in the group will be able to use trolleybuses, subways, buses, rent bicycles and scooters. Upon arrival and on the last day of education, the transfer will take students to the airports, the road to which will take:

  • San Diego Airport - 20 minutes,
  • Los Angeles Airport – 2 hours 45 minutes.

Admission dates and extra charges

Students can choose a study option that is convenient for them: from one to six weeks of classes. The price for the course includes:

  • Full board in a residence or homestay,
  • Program of excursions and activities,
  • Tickets for all local public transport,
  • Transfer from / to the airport, meeting the child by employees,
  • Graduation certificate,
  • Course Study Materials,
  • Language classes in classes of up to 16 people.

Additionally, you must pay:

  • Laundry service when staying in the residence,
  • Deposit for damage or loss of the key to the residence room - $ 100,
  • Registration fee - $ 200,
  • Guardianship fee - $ 90,
  • Courier delivery of documents - $ 100,
  • Transportation and escort of adults - $ 57 per day (only for schoolchildren under 13 years old),
  • Health insurance - $ 4.10 per day,
  • Fee for late changes in the conditions of study (type of accommodation, duration or cancellation) - $ 110,
  • Surfing for six hours a week,
  • One or two additional nights of residence or family accommodation and a tour of Los Angeles.

Enrolment process

The admission process consists of several stages:

  • Filling out the registration form and providing personal data. At this point, it is necessary to inform about the peculiarities in nutrition, accommodation or education, if any,
  • Receiving a response from the admissions committee,
  • Reservation of a place in the class (confirmed only upon receipt of 20% of the total cost of study),
  • Arrival at the campus for final registration and distribution to groups. All applicants take a small speaking test, in which employees check their language level.

Enrolment statistics

The course includes compulsory accommodation in a residence or host family. 160 beds are available for accommodation, so this number of students will be able to study, no more.

Perspectives

Certificates issued after completing the program are able to complement a personal portfolio and prove language skills when applying to a school, college or university.

Entry requirements, how to apply, what is required to enrol

Children from 10 to 17 years old are accepted for education, regardless of their level of knowledge of the English language - the program provides for a grouping of students suitable for each other.

To enroll in the course, prospective students must provide a package of personal documents, including:

  • Health insurance,
  • Student visa or residence permit,
  • Vaccination card,
  • Contact information for parents or guardians.

It is necessary to apply a few months before the expected start of education, the deadline for receiving a deposit is the beginning of March.
