Description of Royal Holloway Summer Kids Camp

  • Location: suburb of London, United Kingdom

On the basis of the famous, prestigious and popular University of Royal Holloway in summer and spring, exciting and effective vacation courses are available to students from around the world aged 10 to 17 years. Students can enter the class at any level of English: even if you have never studied English before, the teachers will select an effective suitable program for you.

The campus of the summer camp is located in Surrey near London (the nearest city is Enham, you can get to the capital in about an hour - only 30 kilometers). You can get to Heathrow International Airport in just 20 minutes, before Gatwick - in 45 minutes, to Stansted - in about an hour. The main building of the campus is the magnificent majestic mansion Founders Building, built in the Victorian era: study here will help children feel like real British aristocrats!

Quick overview of Summer English Courses for children and adolescents:

  • Age of students: 10-17 years;
  • Intensity of lessons: 15-20 hours per week;

About the educational program: Before the beginning of the classes all children are divided into groups according to age and the initial level of knowledge (general introductory testing is conducted). The language program is aimed at developing all the basic language skills:

  • Reading;
  • Auditing (listening comprehension);
  • Written speech;
  • Oral speech (spoken English);
  • Grammar;
  • Vocabulary (vocabulary expansion);
  • Phonetics (correct pronunciation, correction of accent).

The main attention is paid to the development of speech, communication skills, pronunciation correction and vocabulary expansion so that the child can communicate freely and confidently in English in any situation and with any interlocutor.

In the process of teaching, unique teaching aids and books specially developed for summer short-term programs by Oxford International Education Group (specially designed for foreign students) are used. Classes are taught on textbooks, special workbooks, a list of additional literature for extracurricular reading is provided, a list of additional materials, if necessary. Teachers strive for any new word, expression and rule to be given in the language context, in connection with other linguistic means: thus the process of memorizing is easier and more effective.

The curriculum also includes thematic lessons about British culture, history, traditions, art and architecture, sports and cuisine. Every week, there are control tests and a repetition of the passed: if necessary, the teacher can quickly adjust the curriculum and once again explain the complex moments and aspects to children.

Students with any level of English can register for a summer language program: from A1 (basic, initial - Beginner) to C2 (free, advanced - Proficiency). The intensity is 15 academic hours weekly: 9:00-13:00 and 14:00-17:30. Those interested can additionally prepare for the Trinity exam (fluency in conversational English) and pass it at the end of the course, having received the company certificate.

Groups of students include up to 16 people. The curriculum is also assisted by extra-curricular, leisure activities: all of them are conducted in English, so that students can practice their knowledge in an informal, friendly environment.

 

Accommodation, meals, prices

Pupils of summer programs live directly in the territory of Royal Holloway College: for them are opened spacious and comfortable residences New Halls, Reid, Runnymede. Students are provided with cozy, fully furnished rooms for 1-3 people with private facilities (kitchens and living rooms for recreation are common), equipped places for training. Bed linen is provided (changed weekly); For a small fee (2-3 pounds sterling), you can use the laundry and drying (accompanied by the team leader).

The territory is fully guarded, carefully and round the clock - the comfort and safety of children is guaranteed in 24/7 mode. All rooms have locks (students open them with unique identification cards), there are safes in the manager's office (you can hand over documents, money and other valuables). In general, there are computer classes with modern PCs, Wi-Fi is available throughout the territory.

Children's meals - boarding: three meals plus snacks, for meals there is a spacious common dining room:

  • Breakfast (7: 30-9: 00): continental menu, buffet system;
  • Lunch (12: 00-14: 00): minimum 2 hot meals to choose from (one without fail vegetarian), plenty of salads, useful desserts and a variety of side dishes;
  • Dinner (17: 30-19: 00): similar to lunch, free choice of hot and soft drinks, fresh fruit and vegetables.

The camp is distinguished by a very diverse program of leisure, entertainment and excursions. The whole extracurricular program, apart from its entertainment function, is educational in nature: it not only acquaints students with the culture, history and traditions of Great Britain, but also provides an opportunity to practice received linguistic knowledge in an informal, free atmosphere.

Excursions and exciting trips are organized for student groups:

  • The whole day: London, Brighton and the city's huge Oceanarium, Oxford and college campuses;
  • For a few hours (half a day): sightseeing tours to London, a survey of the surroundings of Egham.

On the campus there are also constantly held entertaining and themed evenings: discos, parties, parties and birthdays, Evening karaoke and talent show. There are clubs and clubs on interests: you can choose sports, theater and drama, dance, music, painting, visit an academic club, etc.

In London, children most often visit:

  • A variety of museums and art galleries: the famous Tate Modern, the Great Museum of London;
  • The Great Eye of The London Eye;
  • The lively area and the Leicester Square, the West End, the creative and ebullient Covent Garden, Piazza Square, where almost always the amazing street performers, musicians, actors;
  • St. Paul's Cathedral;
  • The Millennium Bridge (for children, he is most often familiar with the film "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince": an elegant metal suspension bridge.).

Students also rest in the historic seaside Brighton - one Of the most popular seaside resorts in the UK: stroll through the spacious Pier, visit the most beautiful palace Royal Pavilion (built in the 18th century in an interesting and ornate Eastern style). Visiting students and Oxford: among popular for visiting colleges can be noted Christ Church College - it was here that the legendary "Alice in Wonderland" was written, and also a saga about Harry Potter was filmed. In Oxford, you can climb the tower of the church of St. Mary - from there you can enjoy stunning views of the city and its rural scenic surroundings.

Facilities and equipment at Royal Holloway Summer Kids Camp

The nearest town to the school is Egham (Engham) - located within walking distance (about 20 minutes of easy walking), just 10 kilometers from Heathrow International Airport: this makes it easy for children to transfer and travel. It is easy to get to the central and historical part of London, to the picturesque southern coast of Great Britain: trains leave almost every hour (they reach London's Waterloo station). On average, children are scheduled to have 4 trips to London each week.

The campus is well equipped for a fun and diverse pastime for children and effective language training. There are sports halls and numerous sports fields in the open air (tennis courts, football fields, gymnasium and track and field athletics tracks). There are large student halls of the Student Council: general gatherings and holidays, birthdays, discos are held here. Common kitchens are available for all students: here you can make tea or coffee, light snacks, chat with new friends.
