Portland State University is a state research university in Portland, Oregon. It was founded in 1946 as an institution of higher education for veterans of the Second World War and over the next two decades turned into a four-year college and received university status as early as 1969. It is the only state urban university in the state of Oregon, located in the state capital and governed by a board of trustees. The university belongs to the category R2 - the doctoral university (the highest level of research activities on the classification of Carnegie universities).

Activities Portland State University

Portland State University offers students 10 cultural centers and 150 student clubs that allow them to find a hobby, a favorite thing out of school, to meet like-minded people.

Since 1966, the Outdoor program has been inviting PSU students to spend more time outdoors, offering hiking, walking tours, one-night outings, and other outdoor activities that allow them to experience the wild side of Oregon.

First-year students enter one of seven learning communities, find themselves among peers with similar interests, have constant access to teachers, and interact with them outside the classroom. Each community is staffed by an assistant who provides academic support to students.

There are thematic communities on campus designed to bring together residents with similar interests:

  • Viking - for first-year students who want to get acquainted with the possibilities of the university and the city.
  • STEM provides an opportunity to build a community focused on science, technology, engineering, and math.

Entry requirements, how to apply, what is required to enrol

Foreign students present a high school diploma / certificate of completion, a university graduate certificate for a university equivalent to a US high school with an aggregate (total) grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher.

SAT / ACT college entrance exams are not required, but a low average score can be offset by a SAT or ACT score.

Bachelor's applicants, for whom English is not a native, provide official reports on the delivery of international language exams:

  • TOEFL - from 527 on paper, from 197 - on computer.

The Office of International Student Services (ISS) coordinates the Portland State Fellowship program for international students. Financial assistance for international students is available, but limited.
