Hymers College is an independent, coeducational day school in Kingston upon Hull, located on the site of the old Botanic Gardens. It is one of the leading schools in the East Riding of Yorkshire and a member of the Conference of School Principals and Headmistresses.

Hymers offers a supportive system of pastoral care with a powerful system and a home system. The college recognizes that the social and emotional development of students is just as important to progress as academic pursuits.

Educational process

The standard school day at Hymers College runs from 8:40 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and the school itself opens even earlier with pre-school supervision (Breakfast Club) at 7:50 a.m.

Hymers provides parents and children with extended day services until 18:00. During this period, children participate in extracurricular activities and attend interest clubs. A homework club is organized free of charge, which is open until 17:30.

The Junior School curriculum is designed to provide thorough mastery of the core skills that are required throughout schooling, along with providing students with a wide range of subjects that go beyond the usual and are interesting and challenging.

All younger students are placed in one of four faculties, which encourages students to form friendships and work as a team. Faculties compete in a variety of activities, stimulating teamwork and collaboration across different age groups.

  1. Grades 7 and 8. All students study the following subjects: English, Mathematics, Science, French, Spanish, Latin, History, ICT, Geography, Design and Technology, Art, Drama, Music, Reading Skills, Religious Education, Physical Education. In addition, various games are held, personal and social education classes are organized.
  2. Grade 9. Students can choose their curriculum subjects from a range of languages, creative and expressive disciplines.
  3. Grades 10 and 11. Each student will study English, English Literature, Mathematics, and either a Science Trilogy course (worth two final exams) or three natural sciences as separate subjects. Based on their main schedule, students can choose 4 or 5 optional subjects.

Sixth Form

  • Age – 16-18 years old,
  • The duration of study is from 2 years.

In the Sixth Form, students typically choose three subjects (four under certain circumstances). In addition to the A-Level and BTEC, Hymers offers a range of self-study courses, such as the Advanced Project Qualification and the Certificate in Financial Studies.

Students are supported in their studies with the help of a tutor, usually in small groups of 12 that meet daily. They are invited to weekly lectures from interesting guest speakers, such as Holocaust survivor or hypnotist Martin Taylor.

Accommodation, meals, prices

Hymers College offers full-time education only. Babysitting is available from 7:50 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., the Breakfast Club (7:50 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.) and the After School Club (3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.). Separately, parents can pre-order healthy hot meals or cold snacks for their child, and if they wish, they can pack lunch boxes for their children to go.

Activities Hymers College Private School

All Hymers College students have free access to pool classes, and swimming lessons are a mandatory part of the curriculum.

Art and music are taught to all students as separate subjects. Dramaturgy has been present in the curriculum since the 5th grade. All students learn to play musical instruments in class, and half take extracurricular lessons on musical instruments from the 3rd grade. There are three choirs (with the participation of 70% of students) and several instrumental ensembles, the choir has extensive experience in participating in national choral competitions. There are several extracurricular art and performing arts clubs.

The musicians of the Hymers school give more than 35 concerts every year, including outside the school. In 2013, the Junior School Choir performed in the School Choir of the Year category for Barnardos and BBC Songs of Praise.

Dramaturgy is taught to students in grades 7 and 8, often young people prefer to study it at GCSE and A-Level. Many students participate in the school's annual play, which is performed in March each year. Recent performances: "Oliver!", "Annie" and "Les Misérables".

The school makes a significant contribution to the development of the local community. Hymers College is the only independent school in the country that is an official partner of the National Civil Service (NCS). There is a coordinator who oversees the education of approximately 130 students before they volunteer for 30 hours in their local community. The school's annual contribution to the development of the local community is highlighted online.

Unlike most independent schools that employ a unit of the United Cadet Force, Hymers College has its own Army Cadet Force unit, currently numbering about 10 cadets, ranging from recruits to staff sergeants.

A unit of the Royal Hymers College Logistics Corps is part of the 150th Transport Regiment of the Royal Logistics Corps. The unit is part of the Humberside and South Yorkshire Army Cadet Force Company.

Specialized centers for art and design, music, and technology are available. Sixth Form students have their own dedicated spaces for study, relaxation, and socializing. The Learning Resource Centre supports independent study, a valuable skill for university and further education.
