Howell's School Llandaff places great importance on a rich and varied life outside of the classroom. The school offers a wide range of extracurricular activities, everyone can find something to their liking, from photography to yoga classes or creating a rock band.

Educational process

The school curriculum is based on the Welsh National Curriculum and additionally includes PSHE, Welsh, French, Spanish. There is an accredited program for gifted children. Each student can participate in more than 10 different extracurricular academic activities or clubs: for example, in recent years, Howell's School Llandaff has successfully participated in national chess tournaments. Throughout the year, regular educational trips for students are held, meetings with invited speakers are organized. The Forest School is available for students up to Grade 2, and trips around the country are organized from Grade 5.

In two spacious, bright classrooms, girls explore real-life situations through role-plays, dress-ups, dolls and stories. Girls create their own little worlds using a variety of toys that are "animated" by their imaginations.

Howell's School Llandaff has fenced-in green spaces for gardening and walking, an open space for running, hang gliding, and imaginative play, custom-made wooden climbing equipment, and quiet corners for relaxing time with a book.

Preparatory School

Howell's Preparatory School provides an excellent education to a vibrant community of girls from 3 to 11 years old. The school strives to instill a love of knowledge, the ability to ask questions and make informed judgments.

From grades 3 to 6, a highly qualified foreign language teacher teaches all girls Spanish and French as part of a weekly schedule. From the moment they enter the 6th grade, girls also learn the Welsh language, the entire curriculum as a whole has a Welsh flavor, largely dedicated to the history and culture of Wales.

High School

Howell's teachers are very enthusiastic about their subjects and are committed to providing high-quality teaching that nurtures young girls' curiosity, commitment, enthusiasm, and love of learning. Regular one-on-one feedback between teacher and student in all aspects of the work is at the heart of success, enabling every girl to reach her potential.

  • In Year 7, girls study Science, ICT, History, Geography, Religious Studies, Welsh, French and Spanish, Mathematics and English. Art is an integral part, music, drama, art and design are studied. A healthy approach to life is fostered through physical education and the Wellness Program.
  • In the 8th grade, all girls choose two modern foreign languages to continue their studies and begin to study Latin.
  • In Years 10 and 11, most girls will take 10 GCSE subjects, including Maths, English and Literature. The school believes in quality, not quantity, so girls are given time for extracurricular activities and for themselves. Howell's encourages female students to foster a modern, broad, and diverse curriculum to ensure that every girl's aspirations for the next stage of their education are supported. It is recommended to take at least two exams in science and at least one modern foreign language.

Accommodation, meals, prices

Howell's School Llandaff offers full-time instruction only, but students are looked after all day, from 7:45 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The school has a Crocodiles Club : this is a comprehensive care and supervision for children from 3 to 11 years old. Crocodiles includes the Breakfast Club, the After School Club, and the Howell's Holiday Club.

Howell's School Llandaff adheres to a healthy and balanced diet for students, each menu is worked out taking into account all individual preferences. Meals are prepared with fresh ingredients, and breakfast and afternoon snacks include dairy products and fruit.

After reviewing the application, candidates will go through the following stages:

Entry requirements, how to apply, what is required to enrol

The school has an academic selective admissions policy.

  • Kindergarten. Assessment using play-based activities is used to determine whether a child is ready to benefit from the curriculum offered.
  • Preparatory school. In the first and second grades, assessment is carried out through games, informal activities and unstructured assignments. For admission to grades 3-6, candidates submit entrance papers in mathematics, English, and non-verbal reasoning.
  • Grade 7. Candidates take entrance tests in mathematics and English, and pass an interview. Girls from Howell's Preparatory School take an exam so that they can be considered for scholarships.
  • Grades 8-11. Candidates take entrance exams in mathematics and English, and after successful completion of written papers, interviews are held with the school principal to assess communication skills.

Scholarships Howell's School Llandaff

  • The GDST Scholarship Fund provides financial aid to enable suitably qualified students whose parents would not otherwise be able to pay their tuition to attend high school and college.
  • Students entering the school in grades 7 and 12 are provided with full scholarships covering 100% of the tuition fee.
  • Honorary Scholarships: Scholarship applicants who are unsuccessful in receiving the scholarship will be considered for Honorary Fellow status. Honorary scholarships do not provide financial gains, but recognize a girl's potential and her commitment to her chosen subject area.
