Hamelin-Laie International School Barcelona is the first and to date the leading private school in Barcelona, offering education in English, Spanish and Catalan.

The institution provides high-quality education in the programs of the Spanish system in the primary grades and in the Nacional Bachillerato and the International Baccalaureate (IB) in the senior grades. The school educates children from one to 18 years old, while among them representatives of more than 45 nationalities.

The teaching staff takes a holistic approach to the education of young students, preparing them for life in the world and promoting personal, social growth along with academic development. Early Years

  • Age - from one year to five years,
  • The term of study is four years.

The personalized early childhood program is based on the Spanish national curriculum system and aims to foster natural curiosity and a love of discovery. 

Students study in English, but have the opportunity to learn Spanish and Catalan . Through the wide variety of activities offered, teachers encourage exploration, creativity and physical activity of the youngest students.

The Hameln-Laye International School in Barcelona has created a stimulating and nurturing learning environment with a variety of activities that develop physical skills, reading and numeracy skills, creative and critical thinking. The child will engage in music, literary reading, games and interactive exercises in small groups and individually with the teacher. 

The early years program is divided into two age stages:

  • The first stage is one to three years: stimulating games and classes taught in English and Spanish/Catalan in a 50/50 ratio,
  • The second stage is three to five years: 90% of the lessons are conducted in English, and the remaining 10% in Spanish and Catalan.

Primary School, Primary School

The primary school program follows the educational system of Spain and focuses on the development of horizons, diverse skills of young students. Mostly children learn in English, but also learn Spanish and Catalan during integrated classes.  

The curriculum of primary school students includes areas of study such as:

  • English Language and Literature: improving English language skills through reading, writing and studying literature,
  • Geography: the practice of working with maps allows students to understand the regions of the world,
  • History: Through historical events and cultures of the past, students will learn what factors have shaped society and how it has changed over time,
  • Languages: The school encourages multilingualism and cultural awareness, as students learn Spanish and Catalan, additionally choosing French, German or Chinese,
  • Mathematics: Students develop an understanding of mathematical concepts, numbers, and problem solving,
  • Natural Sciences: Students explore scientific concepts, conduct experiments, and form an understanding of the natural world,
  • Physical Education and Health: Through physical activity and health education, children learn how to ensure their personal well-being,
  • Arts: Broadening and deepening skills in music, art, and musical theatre.

Over the course of six years, teachers will build a strong knowledge base for each student, gradually adapting it to further and more rigorous stages of school academic life.

Secondary School, Secondary School

In the middle grades, students follow the Spanish national curriculum, taking into account the many integrated global contexts from the international learning environment in Spain. Students mostly study in English, but have the opportunity to study in Spanish and Catalan . Teachers create a personal set of subjects and extracurricular activities for each child, including the development of personal and academic, social and emotional skills, individual talents.

Middle school students engage in collaborative projects that strengthen their teamwork skills and leadership skills while promoting the values of collaboration, tolerance, and perseverance. Through group projects, they combine their ideas and find solutions, learn how to find compromise and practice speaking in public. 

The curriculum contains a variety of subjects, including new technologies, biology, physics, chemistry, art, and others. A variety of disciplines will help children find what they are really interested in.

National Baccalaureate Programme

The national Spanish program Bachillerato is a graduation certificate of completion of secondary education with the opportunity to enter mainly universities in Spain.

The program aims to comprehensively develop high school students: academic, critical, personal and value skills that will help them in their further education.  To earn a diploma, students will be required to pass several subject exams and meet the school's graduation criteria.

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP)

  • Age - from 16 to 18 years,
  • The term of study is two years.

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Program is a respected degree worldwide and helps students succeed through the perfect blend of personal and academic development. With a wide range of subjects, research projects, and practical opportunities, students create an exceptional development kit that validates their level of knowledge and skills.

Students choose one subject from each of the following groups:

  1. Language and Literature,
  2. Language acquisition,
  3. Individuals and societies,
  4. Science
  5. Mathematics
  6. Art or one of the other group subjects.

Also, high school students need to complete three academic courses, which are a mandatory addition to the subject set:

  • Theory of Knowledge (ToK): reflection on the nature of knowledge and the study of critical thinking,
  • Extended Essay (EE): research on a topic of interest to them in the format of a 4000-word article,
  • Creativity, Activities, Service (CAS): Engaging in activities that will improve the student's creativity and well-being will provide support to the community.

Accommodation, meals, prices

Accommodation in the residence is available for teenagers 14-18 years old. Throughout their stay at the guesthouse, they will be accompanied by experienced staff who are available around the clock and provide invaluable support when needed.

The residential complex has modern conditions for comfortable living during the school year:

The academic year lasts from September to June, during which holidays and days of rest are organized in honor of national and international holidays. Classes are held on weekdays: from Monday to Friday.

  • Arrival at the campus to book a place in the residence (only for children from 14 to 18 years old), making a deposit,
  • Orientation days and the beginning of education.

Entry requirements, how to apply, what is required to enrol

Applications for admission are accepted throughout the year.

Academic requirements for applicants to various levels:

  • Early years: a report from a preschool teacher with notes on the child's general habits and behaviors,
  • Elementary School: Tutor's Report, Latest School Transcript and Final Grades for the Previous Year,
  • Middle and high schools: class teacher's report, two transcripts and final grades for the last years of study, motivation letter.

Language criteria are important if you want to study in the IB Diploma high school program, as the last two years of academic work are very important for passing exams. Students must have a sufficient level of conversational English, read and write perfectly. The exact criteria are set for each child individually during the interview process.

All foreign applicants must provide personal documents: passport, health insurance and residence permit for education in Spain.
