What sets Spanish schools apart from others around the world? Why do parents opt for primary and secondary education in Spain?

Several factors make Spanish schools stand out. These include complete immersion in the Spanish language and culture within a family-like environment, Spain's strategic location in Southern Europe, highly ranked educational institutions, and a rich historical and artistic heritage. Additionally, the warm and welcoming nature of the people, vibrant festivals, colorful cities, and unique traditions and folklore add to the appeal.

How are the top Spanish boarding school rankings determined? Are they reliable today?

Colegio San Patricio, featured in El Mundo's top ten most prestigious schools in Spain, is a prime example. To be listed in El Mundo, factors like academic results, educational models, international recognition and reputation, campus facilities, academic and non-academic services offered, student retention rates, and teacher satisfaction are considered.

ISSPT, as part of the Boarding Schools Association (BSA), follows standards that emphasize child welfare, well-being, and boarding experiences, rather than just geographical location.

What's crucial when selecting a Spanish school?

Look for excellent support and management, the opportunity to study the International Baccalaureate (IB), the school's prestige, successful IB diploma completion rates, university placement recommendations, and the national diversity on campus. Also consider extracurricular opportunities, healthcare services, language immersion programs, shared values, community spirit, academic support, safety measures, and adherence to COVID protocols.

When is the best time to apply to schools in Spain, and what should applicants expect?

It’s advisable to start the process about 8 months before your intended start date due to limited spots. If aiming for a September start, begin applications in January or February, and be ready to navigate visa requirements.

What subjects are students currently favoring?

There’s a balanced interest in both sciences and humanities, including fine arts, music, modern languages, and global politics.

Do all Spanish schools aspire to be in national top rankings?

Indeed, being recognized as one of Spain’s top schools is a significant accolade for the school community, setting it apart and contributing to its continual rise in rankings.

How has COVID-19 affected your school, and how have you supported students?

Some new families chose to delay enrollment, but many entrusted their children to us from January 2021, reflecting our successful pandemic management. We’ve maintained in-person classes with reduced boarding capacity and quarantine provisions. The shift to online learning was smooth, thanks to our status as a Google Reference School and existing online platforms. We’ve now adopted a hybrid model, with a preference for in-person attendance, facilitated by our spacious, safe campus.

Is it challenging to obtain a scholarship for talented students? What are the typical offerings?

Colegio San Patricio Toledo awards limited scholarships annually, considering academic and extracurricular achievements, family finances, and needs. We look for future leaders across various fields. Scholarships typically cover 30-70% of tuition and full board, contingent on the student maintaining their success levels. However, they don't include costs like books, transportation, uniforms, extracurricular activities, registration fees, external language exams, or official IB exams. Scholarship applications are open to new IB Diploma Program students.

At what age do international students typically enroll in Spanish schools?

We welcome international students for full boarding from age 14 and day school from age 12.

Do all schools offer ESL support? How important is this?

International School San Patricio Toledo provides a bilingual education system, with 50% instruction in Spanish and 50% in English. We offer supportive English courses for all foreign students to help with exams, studying, and project preparation. Spanish lessons are also available. Students prepare for Cambridge YLE exams from PYP 4 and can progress to higher levels of ESOL exams by the University of Cambridge.

What additional expenses should parents anticipate?

Beyond tuition and living expenses, parents should budget for:

  • Non-refundable entry fee: €850

  • Refundable deposit: €1,100 (first year only)

  • Uniform: €500

  • Airport pick-up: €125

  • IB Diploma Program equipment: €120

  • Arts Center activities: €90-120/month

  • Additional Spanish lessons: €50/month

  • Mother tongue diploma (if not Spanish/English): €1,950/30 lessons over 2 years

  • Pocket money: ~€150/month.

When choosing a Spanish school, what else should parents consider?

Parents often look at inclusivity, national diversity, personalized learning, emotional support, safety protocols, language and cultural immersion opportunities, career/educational guidance, location, campus facilities, sports amenities, arts center resources, e-learning options, and personal development programs.

Any advice for potential applicants to Spanish schools?

Familiarize yourself with the IB program structure and methodology. Explore the school’s website and prepare for your interview by highlighting your qualities, achievements, plans, and how the school can help you reach your potential. Prepare thoughtful questions for school representatives, improve your English, and work on a compelling motivation letter.

Why choose the IB Diploma Program?

The IB Diploma Program is globally respected, opening doors to leading universities worldwide. It offers a comprehensive, balanced curriculum that prepares students for future employment and community involvement, fostering academic and personal growth.
