The Universidad CEU Cardenal Herrera (CEU Cardenal Herrera University) is part of the Fundación CEU San Pablo (Foundation of the CEU San Pablo University), which is a non-profit educational organization with more than 80 years of experience in the field of education. Those who created the Foundation were members of the Asociación Católica de Propagandistas (ACdP), an organization founded in 1908 by Ayala's father.

The foundation, founded in 1933 by ACdP, has educational institutions in 25 locations, providing more than 190 educational programs: from preschool education to postgraduate education and vocational training. The Foundation currently has offices in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Murcia, Alicante, Vigo, Jerez, Elche, Seville and Valladolid.

The creation of the CEU Cardenal Herrera University was approved by the Valencian Parliament in December 1999, the Foundation carried out educational activities in Valencia from 1971 to 1972. After this first year of pre-university education, the institution became centro Adcrito, or university college. Since then, the curricula have grown to such an extent that it has become an independent university, the first private university in the Valencia region. The Elche campus began operating in 1994-95 and the Castellón campus in 2007-2008. CEU Cardenal Herrera University is the only private university represented in the three provinces that make up the Valencia region (Comunitat Valenciana).

The innovative development strategy has transformed CEU UCH into the most international university in the region. More than a third of the university's students are foreigners (about 35%), and the university pays special attention to preparing students for today's globalized world. Today there are students from more than 90 countries.

The university is part of the Fundación Universitaria San Pablo CEU (FUSP-CEU), whose mission is to contribute to the betterment of society through learning at its facilities, offering an educational model "consistent with Christian principles, the values transmitted by the Gospel, and playing a role in public life, defending justice and the individual."

There are television studios, a veterinary hospital, computer labs, recording studios, a dental clinic, a pharmaceutical practical office, and simulation rooms. The university consists of 3 different campuses, which are located in Alfara del Patriarca (Valencia), Elche and Castellón. All major facilities, like the Central Library and the Department of International Relations, are located in the main campus in Alfara del Patriarca. The campus is very well connected to the centre of Valencia by a direct metro line (line 1) and an accessible bus service. The centre is also close to some private student residences.

The brand new Central Library of the University is a building of 5000 m2, which accommodates about 700-800 students. Its training facilities include several computer labs, 12 rooms for group classes and 7 research rooms. Audiovisual and online reference materials are available in periodical libraries and media libraries.
