Description of Brighton Girls GDST Private School

  • Age of students: from 2 to 18 years
  • Location: Brighton,
  • Founded: 1872 year
  • Type of institution: private school
  • Language of instruction: English
  • Type of education: separate, for girls

GDST is the largest group of independent schools in the UK, employing almost 4,000 staff and 20,000 students. As a charitable foundation that owns and operates 23 schools and sponsors two academies, it invests all of its income in its schools.

Since its founding in 1872, GDST has been at the forefront of innovation in girls' education. GDST students were among the first women to graduate and start working, and this pioneering spirit persists to this day as GDST strives to help girls make their mark on the world in their own way and on their own terms.

Brighton Girls strives to create an environment where students:

  • Positive towards others and kind to themselves,
  • Understand the power of diversity and value different points of view,
  • Have a strong sense of community,
  • Develop strategies for managing their well-being and life,
  • Understand and appreciate their strengths,
  • Intellectually inquisitive, appreciate learning for the sake of learning,
  • Cope with difficulties confidently and creatively,
  • Set high goals in the belief that they can change any situation.

There is strong evidence that segregated education for girls leads to greater self-confidence, resilience, greater variety of subject choices, academic achievement and accelerated career advancement.

Today's girls' schools serve to destroy rather than support gender stereotypes by offering an education designed to develop and empower successful, happy, confident and enterprising young women. Girls achieve more when they are given a separate space to develop. In a separate school, girls:

  • Less likely to conform to gender stereotypes,
  • Show a greater propensity for risk and innovation,
  • They have more opportunities to show leadership.

In a school for girls, their needs and preferences can be fully taken into account in a special learning environment.

Scientific achievements

Some of the achievements of girls in school:

  • Cheerleader Millie is the first international team to win the Triple Crown,
  • At the World Dance Championships,
  • Sussex County Swimming Championships,
  • Silver Award and Best Result of the Year – UKMT Maths Challenge,
  • Brighton's fastest cross country team.

The GSA study also highlights that compared to girls in co-educational schools, female students in girls' schools:

  • 2.5 times more likely to take additional courses in mathematics and physics at A-level,
  • They are more likely to study the natural sciences: biology is 40% higher coverage, chemistry is 77% higher, computer science is 72% higher.

Things to know about

This year, the anti-racism committee has worked diligently to inform and educate girls about systemic racism. The committee held workshops for students aged 7 and over, covering topics such as "The Origins of Racism in the UK", "Introduction to White Privilege" and "Racial Terminology", as well as interviewing some inspiring GDST alumni about their experiences.

The purpose of the Committee against Racism is to instil in girls an awareness and understanding of systemic racial injustices, both within and outside the school community, and to enable them to denounce and oppose racism in any form.

Preparatory School

  • Age: from 2 to 5 years.

The training that a girl undergoes in the first year is crucial, it is on these strong academic foundations that all her future success is built. For this reason, the curriculum has been designed to balance core literacy and numeracy skills with a focus on global studies and a variety of specialized subjects. The main approach focuses on the following seven areas:

  1. Communication and language development,
  2. Physical development,
  3. Personal, social and emotional development,
  4. Literacy development,
  5. Mathematics
  6. Understanding the world,
  7. Expressive art and design.

The days are carefully planned to stimulate children's social, physical and intellectual growth while maintaining lightness and ease. A number of extracurricular activities are available, including a children's choir, gymnastics, ballet, flamenco, drama, yoga and an entertainment area to explore.

Primary school

  • Age: from 5 to 11 years.

A broad, balanced curriculum means that every girl's interests are fully encouraged. First of all, they focus on seven areas of learning and development within the curriculum of the initial stage of early learning:

  1. Communication and language development,
  2. Physical development,
  3. Personal, social and emotional development,
  4. Literacy development,
  5. Mathematics
  6. Understanding the world,
  7. Expressive art and design.

There are also many extracurricular activities including music, drama and gymnastics. Trips to places like the Chichester Planetarium, the local farm, and Wild Beach School ensure that girls don't just learn in the classroom.

An interactive learning diary gives parents accurate information about their daughter's achievements and successes, and the opportunity to participate more actively in learning.

  • 1 and 2 years of study

The curriculum of grades 1 and 2 is based on the basic level, but with a great emphasis on self-study. Girls are taught mainly by their classroom mentor, who is assisted by assistants and teachers who are specialists in subjects such as French, music and ICT. The humanities and natural sciences are taught comprehensively to encourage curiosity and to begin to foster an interest in history, geography, and specific sciences.

  • Year 3 and 4

Class teachers continue to observe, and may conduct their class from time to time. In general, girls have more lessons with specialist teachers (subject teachers). School excursions continue to improve the curriculum, and an overnight trip to an active recreation center in 4th grade is very popular.

  • Year 5 and 6

In grades 5 and 6, girls continue to study according to the extended curriculum, preparation for high school becomes more focused. The curriculum is expanding and students' abilities in core subjects are being strengthened.

School visits and educational seminars also improve lessons. A two-day trip is held in the 5th grade, a five-day trip to France in the 6th grade – this helps students develop a sense of independence.

The summer semester of Grade 6 focuses on life skills, including entrepreneurship, cycling skills, and first aid. These activities, often done in groups, help girls develop initiative and a sense of responsibility.
