The Early Years Foundation

  • Age: from 2 to 6 years.

Early years are the most important stage in a child's development. Early childhood, the years from birth to six years, is the most important period that lays the foundation for a child's growth and learning.

As part of the EYFS curriculum, core areas of study are foundational and play an important role in encouraging children's curiosity and enthusiasm for learning. It is these important areas that are the driving force behind children's support as they learn to form relationships, soften emotions, and prepare them for life and learning.

These main areas are:

  • communication and language,
  • physical development and personal, social and emotional development.

Personal, social and emotional development in primary school refers to the process by which children develop the ability to establish and maintain trusting relationships with adults and peers; understand and express emotions appropriately; become independent, explore and interact with the environment, make responsible decisions.

These skills allow children to interact positively with others, have a positive attitude towards school, increasing academic performance. Teachers play a key role in supporting children in developing social and emotional skills.

Daily activities help children feel safe. Routines help children learn to perform tasks ranging from dressing, brushing their teeth and preparing for school to learning how the world works and the skills needed to interact successfully in it. A simple daily routine provides a basis for teaching children other important skills, such as basic hygiene, time management, self-control, self-care, responsibility, independence and self-confidence. The school and teachers understand the importance of the daily routine and its impact on the well-being of children and provide such an opportunity throughout the day.
