Description of Waring Private School

Founded in 1972, our institution is situated in the charming town of Beverly, Massachusetts, USA. We are proud to welcome students aged 12 to 18 years into our collaborative learning community.

As a day school specializing in the humanities and natural sciences, we are committed to providing a comprehensive and enriching educational experience. For those in need of accommodation, we offer the option of host families, ensuring a comfortable and supportive environment.

The student body consists of 168 individuals, fostering a close-knit community where students can thrive academically and personally. The language of instruction at our institution is both English and French, promoting a multicultural and multilingual approach to learning.

Waring School, nestled in the scenic region of Massachusetts, is not your typical high school. Here, we uphold rigorous academic standards, equipping students with cutting-edge resources and modern opportunities for comprehensive growth. Our doors are open to students from diverse backgrounds and countries, each of whom possesses a unique talent or passion, be it in the realms of science, mathematics, writing, athletics, arts, or the performing arts. Our mission is to help every student unearth their potential and nurture it daily.

What sets us apart is the fusion of our vibrant school community, intellectually stimulating materials, and a rich curriculum, which empowers students to reach remarkable heights. Through creative projects, talent showcases, and successful peer and teacher interactions, our students flourish. Our courses, electives, and experiential learning options encourage students to view the world from fresh perspectives, cultivate critical thinking skills, and advocate for their own ideas.

Waring School takes a distinctive approach to grading. We believe that conventional letter grades can hinder the progress of learning. Instead, our dedicated teachers tailor their methods to each student, helping them tackle challenges and uncover answers to questions about academic growth and their strengths and weaknesses in various subjects.

At the start of each school year, all students embark on a camp experience, fostering better adaptation and the forging of new friendships. This initiative is particularly valuable for our international students, as it helps them acclimate, assimilate into a new culture, and become acquainted with local traditions. Additionally, Waring School offers a comprehensive support program, extending guidance and assistance to students of all ages throughout their academic journey.

Educational process

Waring School has adopted a special system of evaluating students: teachers do not give letter grades, preferring a detailed description of the merits and gaps in the knowledge of each student. Leading universities and colleges accept such reports as standard report cards, taking into account students' strengths, each teacher's comments on their abilities. The entrance forms of Waring School students are sometimes even put in a separate pile in the admissions committees of universities.

Faculties and colleges

Waring School has two academic departments, each of which is focused on teaching children of a certain age: middle and high school. The school also has a summer education department that organizes seasonal short-term courses.

High school

  • Students age: Grades 6-12
  • Duration of the program: from 1 year,
  • Dates: annually.

The core school curriculum in grades 6 through 8 is designed to help students transition from the elementary curriculum to a more challenging high school program. Teachers focus on developing skills in a demanding and supportive environment. As students are required to spend 2 years studying the course, they have the opportunity to develop their study skills according to their own pace and needs, in a well-rounded academic environment that is conducive to achieving goals.

The program includes the study of:

  • Mathematics
  • Natural Sciences,
  • Humanities.

Also, students are offered an extensive set of courses that are usually not available at the high school level:

  • Regular participation in classes to develop writing skills - twice a week,
  • Learning French through a partial immersion program,
  • Basics of music,
  • Enriched mathematics,
  • Study of geography in French.

Students can also join a high school math club and compete as part of a math team.

The high school program gives you the opportunity to:

  • Learn to read critically, write text expressively and analytically,
  • Participate in discussion classes, developing the skills of expressing one's own ideas and the ability to listen to and perceive the ideas of others,
  • Engage in research, projects and long-term assignments, communicate in spoken French, building a solid foundation in all areas of knowledge,
  • Develop skills to manage your time within a complex program, which helps to form useful qualities necessary in future studies and life in general.

The high school writing program is designed to help students develop and find their unique style by learning the basics of effective writing in a variety of genres:

  • Verses
  • Stories
  • Dialogues
  • Plays
  • Personal essays.

Regardless of the genre chosen, students write each week throughout their studies at Waring School, which contributes to the development of their imagination, self-understanding and writing skills. The writing program also prepares high school students to speak at meetings and graduation ceremonies.

Writing classes are held twice a week. Students quickly internalize the idea that their work is intended for an audience of peers and teachers. The audience plays a central role in the writing program at Waring School: over time, students become more adept at formulating critical commentaries on the work of their comrades, they themselves begin to better understand how their own work affects readers. Regardless of which grade students started their studies on the program (6-7 or 11-12), writing lessons become useful seminars for them, where they write, criticize, review, improve and create their portfolios.

Waring School students are often recognized for their achievements. Every year, children become winners of a teenage poetry contest held by the Beverly Public Library. They also take part in the Young Writers Conference, which is held in March each year, interacting with well-known authors from all over the country and writers from the Boston area.

The educational process in stages:

  • Grades 6, 7 and 8 - no more than 9-11 people study in each. Classes are taught by senior teachers and writing assistant teachers who provide direct guidance. Assistants effectively promote understanding of the writing program and inspire students, contribute to strengthening the relationship between younger and older students. As educators, senior students pass on the culture and traditions of Waring School's writing program to the next generation.
  • Grades 9-10 - they are engaged in writing together, in groups usually no more than 12 people. The educational process is built on a genre principle, with attention to literature, poetry and personal essays at different periods of the school year - or, alternatively, on a thematic basis, with a focus on specific topics set by teachers. In both cases, classes are held in the form of seminars.
  • Grades 11-12 – In them, students have the opportunity to choose one-semester writing courses to focus on a specific topic. Here they study literature, write poetry, develop personal essays, engage in dramaturgy, create scripts, work on the school newspaper Le Temps Retrouvé.

The French program

  • Students age: grades 6-12,
  • Duration of the program: from 1 year,

The French program begins with partial immersion in grades 6 and 7: at this stage, special attention is paid to developing a quick understanding and acquiring the correct pronunciation of French words. Students achieve high scores on the SAT II tests and the AP exam in French. Students who have successfully mastered the language by the time of graduation can take the course after passing the AP exam. The brightest middle and high school students can apply for a French teaching assistant position.

In the 9th grade, students participate in a 4-week exchange program in Angers, France. Each event, which is held annually in February, includes a French poetry reading competition, judged by members of the French consulate. Under the guidance of their teachers, all classes prepare original French performances at meetings of the whole school, which is a real event for performers and spectators.

Students have the opportunity to visit the provinces of Quebec, Angers, Paris and Provence to improve their language skills and deepen their understanding of other areas. By the end of the training, children will program the robots to move autonomously based on sensor signals, as well as to control based on signals from the remote control. To participate in this camp, children need to take a free Learn Java programming course (from Codecademy) before the first day of the camp,
  • Introduction to the first LEGO league (12 to 15 years old) – this program will teach the basics of building and coding an FLL robot. Instructors will teach students how to use Spike, a Scratch-based programming language, to control robotic systems. • Photography (12 to 18 years old) – students will learn how the first film cameras worked, learn how to develop photographs in various techniques, and visit a darkroom. Additional projects include Photo-gram collages using objects and drawings, adding color using paints created for photographs.

The week of training will begin with the manufacture of a camera obscura, with the processing of paper negatives in the laboratory: this will give students the basis for the invention of black and white film photography. In the field, with the help of 35-mm cameras, teachers discuss the composition with the pupils, devoting time to a careful examination of the object and lighting, introducing them to the aperture settings, shutter speed and exposure meter readings. During the week, students will process film, print enlarged images in a dark room, creating a series of photographs for demonstration.

Summer programs do not provide accommodation and meals on the school campus.
