Tonbridge School is a famous British boarding school for boys. Its founder is Andrew Judd. Tonbridge School has a membership in the Eton Group. The school belongs to the Association of the 12 most prestigious boarding houses in Britain.

The institution is famous for outstanding academic results of its students. The school is also famous for own symphony orchestra. 

The institution has a high GCSE and A-level rating among private independent boarding schools in England. It ranks 11th and 29th in the TOP-50, respectively.

Entry conditions

In a prestigious school, recruitment is carried out on a competitive basis. Foreign students need a characterization from the school, an extract from the report card or a certificate of graduation from 9 classes, an ideal knowledge of English (level B2).

Each entrant is also interviewed. It often plays a decisive role in the enrollment of students. The interview allows you to assess the ambitions of the entrant, his desire for achievements, the available personal qualities and acquired communication skills. At school natural sciences, humanitarian subjects, exact sciences are studied. The strongest in the educational institution are the departments of economics and political science. They are among the best in the country.

Year after year, graduates with their exam results confirm the high quality of the education. The average results are A * -B for A-level - 93%, for GCSE - 96%. Annually more than 40 graduates from Tonbridge School enter the programs in Oxford.

Students learn a large set of subjects: English and foreign languages (Chinese, German, Spanish, French - to choose from), biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, computer, information technology, physical development.

10-11 year students are preparing for the GCSE. At this stage, mathematics, English, natural sciences, at least one foreign language are compulsory for studying. Students are offered a choice of 3 more subjects from the list, which includes technologies and design, music, theatrical skills, art, the foundations of religion, history, geography, Greek, Latin.

The sixth form of studying (12-13 years) provides for the opportunity of obtaining an A-level certificate. The program is distinguished by a high level of academic load. Students at Tonbridge School are allowed to learn 4 main subjects instead of 5 (according to the standard program). The choice of the boys is offered to study the following subjects:

  • Latin, Greek, English, Chinese, Spanish, German, French;
  • Geography;
  • History;
  • Physical education;

  • Chemistry;

  • The fundamentals of religion;

Accommodation, meals, prices

The boys are accommodated at the school on a full board basis. There are 7 dormitories on the campus, designed for 60 people each. The residences have dining rooms, kitchens, staff.

Students 1 - 5 years old  are accommodated in 2-3-bed rooms with private facilities. 6 years old boys live in separate apartments, including a bedroom and study. In general, every dormitory has a recreation room, a sports infrastructure.

Students meals are organized by residences. Joint dinners and barbeques are arranged on weekends, so that students can communicate in an informal setting. Food is prepared in the kitchens of residences by professional chefs. Healthy eating in the Tonbridge School is marked by a special award

Subjects and sports

Activities Tonbridge School

Traditionally, for British boarding schools, an extracurricular program at the Tonbridge School is divided into 3 blocks. Entertainment provides for the participation of students in various activities. The boys are offered interesting excursions around the city, to London, the university centers of England. Local entertainment is also organized for students: concerts, quizzes, show programs, sports inside and competitions between schools.

There are a lot of clubs in the school. International students are also given the opportunity to visit clubs of interest. Boys can develop creative abilities, study optional subjects of interest to them.

The sports program is no less diverse. Infrastructural possibilities of the educational institution make it possible to engage in volleyball, tennis, water polo, swimming, squash, shooting, sailing, judo, hockey, golf, football, pentathlon, fencing, cricket, rock climbing, basketball, badminton, athletics. The program also includes sport orienteering. Each boy can choose one or more priority sports.

Sports infrastructure includes a gymnasium, indoor pool, 17 tennis courts and 40 hectares of playgrounds and fields. Creative children can study in the art and design studio. Mass events take place in the theater for 350 seats.

Each department has its own auditor fund in the academic buildings. Most of them also have a profile library with a reading room. The school has an extensive computer network. Its capabilities allow students to exchange educational information online.

Admission dates and extra charges

The school year starts in September, ends in early July. After each trimester, students leave for a two-week vacation. In the summer trimester, the vacation lasts a week.

  • Autumn trimester - from 02 sep. till 10 dec.;
  • Spring trimester - from 05 jan. till 16 mar.;
  • Summer trimester - from 12 apr. till 02 feb.;
  • Vacation - from 17 oct. till 01 nov., from 12 feb. till 21 feb., from 27 may till 05 jun..

Additional fees:

  • registration fee - 150 pounds;
  • deposit (cost of one trimester) and confirmation of the place in the school - 12096 pounds + 1500 pounds ;
  • lessons "English as a foreign language" (EFL, for non-English-speaking students) - 1200 per term;
