Description of The University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC)

The University of Nottingham in China is located in the intensively growing and developing Ningbo, a few dozen kilometers from Shanghai. Despite the fast pace of life, the history of Ningbo dates back 70 centuries: the city stood here when tribes of hunters and gatherers roamed on the site of Rome and Jerusalem.

It was founded in 2004 as the Chinese Political Institute. Since 2013, it has been officially recognized that the quality of education here does not differ from that at the University of Nottingham in the UK. 

Education is conducted in English, graduates are awarded degrees from the University of Nottingham. All structural units conduct education at three levels - bachelor's, master's and doctoral studies.

Faculties and colleges

The academic structure of the university includes three faculties, which are divided into departments, schools and departments:

Bachelor

62 directions, training in English. The duration of training, depending on the level of language training, is 3 or 4 years (in this case, students are invited to take a preparatory year to improve their English), full-time format, with accommodation on campus.

There are 2 options for bachelor's degrees: 4 + 0 and 2 + 2. In the first case, the entire period of study takes place on the campus in Nanbo, in the second - the last two years of study, students can spend in other campuses of the University of Nottingham - in the UK or Malaysia.

Accommodation, meals, prices

The university's campus was opened by British Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott in 2006. Architecturally, it is a copy of the Trent Building in Nottingham, with some modifications designed to reflect the national spirit of China.

It is located in Ningbo Higher Education Park, surrounded by picturesque lawns and hills. The total area exceeds 30 hectares, and the area of residential, educational and administrative buildings is 640 thousand square meters. This made it possible to place on the territory:

  • Living rooms for more than 8000 students and staff;
  • Several dozen shops, cafes, restaurants;
  • A multidisciplinary sports complex that meets all the requirements of students.

Accommodation on campus is paid. Depending on the type of accommodation, the cost will be from 9 to 16 thousand yuan per year (plus utilities) + a deposit of 1000 yuan:

  • Four-room apartment with a common living room, two bathrooms, a balcony and a kitchen with modern kitchen appliances;
  • Single rooms with shower, toilet and balcony;
  • Single rooms without private facilities, with shower and laundry room on the floor.

Regardless of the type of accommodation, the housing stock is equipped with:

  • Air conditioning
  • wireless Internet,
  • bed with mattress,
  • a desk,
  • wardrobe and other furniture;
  • hot water is supplied around the clock.

Entrance is carried out by student card.

For the first year of study, the fee is paid at a time, from the second it is possible to pay for semesters.

Activities The University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC)

Student life in Ningbo is under the scrutiny of the Office of Student Engagement in order to develop a transparent, diverse and competitive environment, including extracurricular activities.

Within the walls of the university there are 20 student self-governing organizations, several dozen innovative research groups, over 70 communities of students of various profiles - academic, scientific and practical, sports and humanitarian.

The calendar of university life is filled with events of various formats and degrees of involvement. Among the most striking annual events are "world villages" (fairs where student communities represent their country in its traditions, customs, stage theatrical performances, treat colleagues to their own national cuisine, etc.), various sports competitions.

Among the latter, a special place is occupied by the Tri Campus Games - an Olympiad in which several hundred students of two dozen nationalities from three campuses of Nottingham (British, Chinese and Malaysian) compete with each other in various sports disciplines for a week.

Advantages

  • The university has established partnerships with six dozen universities of the PRC, the lion's share of which participate in the "Project 211" - a program for the priority development of Chinese universities;
  • The university also entered into a partnership agreement with Fudan University, under which the Confucius Institute was opened in Nottingham in 2007. In 2016, a branch of the institute was opened in Ningbo – thus nottingham University in Ningbo became the first university in mainland China, where a CI representative office was opened;
  • At least 250 bachelors each year are transferred to the British University of Nottingham on a two-diploma program as the final stage of education. Over 70% of UNNC graduates continue to study abroad, with at least half of them enrolling in one of the top 50 universities in the world;
  • The University conducts active research work; The citation index of the University of Nottingham in Ningbo bypassed a number of prestigious Chinese universities with an average score of 1.45, and in a number of areas (in particular, engineering, economic, socio-scientific and humanitarian) occupies a leading position.

Facilities and equipment at The University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC)

The campus is located in the middle of the picturesque Ningbo Higher Education Park. On the territory there is a traditional Chinese and English garden, a lake, student dormitories, a library complex, educational and administrative buildings, as well as a kind of main "street" - a gallery of restaurants, shops and cafeterias. The official website of the university says that Starbucks, which opened here in 2008, was the first in mainland China.

The Center for Sustainable Energy Technologies (CSET), which has been operating since the autumn of 2008, is the first building in the country with zero carbon emissions.

The university library has more than 1 million volumes. Subscription to 1680 periodicals was organized, access to online resources and databases of various subjects was provided, virtual reading rooms of 8 national libraries of various states were opened.

Within the walls of the university library there is a unique collection of reproductions of ancient Chinese classics - a collection of 13,396 volumes of the oldest literary works. The preparation of this meeting took 6 years and required over 60 million yuan of investment. Access is available by appointment.

Also, the university is equipped with its own clinic, which is equipped with all the necessary equipment to provide students and teachers of the university with first aid; if necessary, specialists will write out a referral for specialized examinations or issue a prescription.

Admission dates and extra charges

According to the university's own estimate, the total total costs, including tuition fees, health insurance, food, accommodation, etc. are 140-160 thousand yuan per year.

The fee for submitting an application for admission in electronic form is $ 30 per person. The registration fee can be paid using GooglePay or UNNC Finance payment systems.

The average cost of food is from $ 200 to $ 250 per month (in the case of meals in the university canteen) or up to $ 400 (in the case of using catering establishments located within the city).

The deadline for submission of documents is May 30, the results of HKDSE, GCSE, A-level and others must be received by June 15. however, the administration of the university is ready to meet the students whose results will be published after this period, BUT subject to timely notification of the administration of the educational institution.

Entry requirements, how to apply, what is required to enrol

The applicant must be at least 18 years old at the time of enrollment. In the event that the applicant has not reached the age of majority, parents or guardians must provide written consent and guarantees that the university will not have to assume all or part of the parental functions.

Applicants must provide:

  • One letter of recommendation on a letterhead signed and/or stamped;
  • Transcript of school exam results (in full or currently available);
  • High school diploma;
  • Certificate with the results of testing in English (IELTS or PTE);
  • Application;
  • Photocopy of the main pages of the passport;
  • Color photo 4 * 3 without a headdress on a white background.

All documentation in languages other than English must be accompanied by a notarized translation performed by an accredited translator.

If the applicant came from a country where the official language is any language other than English, he must confirm the level of English proficiency. The minimum requirements are as follows:

  • IELTS 5.5 with at least 5.0 for any element;
  • PTE Academic 59;
  • TOEFL iBT 79 (minimum 17 in writing and listening, 18 in reading and 20 in speaking).

Scholarships The University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC)

The University offers a wide range of scholarship programs; according to statistics, 29% of undergraduate students and over 40% of graduate students are recipients of various scholarships from the moment of admission.

For bachelors who are not citizens of the PRC, Hong Kong SAR, Macau or Taiwan, the following scholarship programs are available:

Nottingham Global Scholarship

Covers 100%, 50% or 25% of the tuition fee for the first year of undergraduate studies. Available to foreign applicants who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and meet the minimum requirements (AAA in A-level; 36 IB points or equivalent for participation in a qualifying year; or AAAAA in iGCSE). Applications are considered until May 31 annually and can be submitted online;

Scholarship for Central and Eastern Europe

20,000 yuan for full-time students who have citizenship of one of the following countries:

  • Poland
  • Czechia
  • Slovakia
  • Croatia
  • Romania
  • Bulgaria
  • Serbia
  • Montenegro
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • North Macedonia,
  • Slovenia
  • Estonia
  • Latvia
  • Lithuania.

The scholarship is paid annually in June.

Zhejiang/Ningbo Government Scholarship

A one-time payment of 20 thousand yuan. To apply for this scholarship, it is necessary to make a corresponding note in the package of documents for enrollment and attach a completed application form for admission to a university and a motivation letter-application of no more than 500 words.

Nottingham Family Scholarship

Tuition discount of 10% for those whose relatives are currently studying in Ningbo or have successfully graduated from the university with awards or distinctions. To receive a discount, you must provide documents confirming kinship.

For undergraduates and postgraduates are available:

  • Nottingham Global Scholarship (covers 100%, 50% or 25% of the full cost of the first year of study on the Master's programme).
  • Family scholarship;
  • Scholarship of the countries of Central and Eastern Europe (30 thousand yuan);
  • Zhejiang/Ningbo Government Scholarship (30,000 yuan);

The rules for applying for scholarships are identical to those described above for undergraduate studies.

In addition, graduates of the University of Nottingham who apply for full-time postgraduate studies are entitled to a 15% discount throughout their studies. To obtain it, it is necessary to provide the administration of the educational institution with documents confirming the availability of a bachelor's or master's degree.

In addition, the university has established a fund of 500,000 yuan annually to provide scholarships to exchange students. The average size of the scholarship is 6000 yuan (one-time).
