What distinguishes Swiss schools, making them highly valued by parents?

Several factors make Swiss schools stand out: safety, the opportunity for year-round sports and activities (like water sports, skiing, snowboarding, rock climbing, hiking, and team sports), and the chance to learn multiple languages amidst a rich cultural backdrop. Swiss education paves the way to top universities, and many state-owned Swiss universities offer world-class education at minimal cost.

Educational process

Laptops, tablets, smartphones, the Internet, and other technologies have become the backbone of modern life, and TASIS believes that these tools can support the acquisition of knowledge, enable creative expression, and promote lifelong learning. It recognizes the need to teach pupils to be responsible, informationally literate digital citizens. Wireless Internet access is used throughout the campus, protected by a reliable filtering system, Each classroom is equipped with an Apple TV, a projector with an audio system, and an interactive display. In computer labs and on personal equipment, you can access student assignments, school calendars, family catalogs using the Veracross school information system.

To support the youngest students in their classrooms and meet diverse learning needs, the primary school began transitioning to a mobile technology integration model in 2012. Today, most elementary classrooms are equipped with iPads, so children learn from a variety of materials that will prepare them for success in high school:

  • Use of applications, the Internet to search for information, images,
  • Writing texts with word processors, graphic organizers,
  • Practice arithmetic, spelling, grammar,
  • Creating and conducting informational presentations,
  • Creation and editing of videos, other forms of multimedia,
  • Development of digital citizenship skills,
  • Use of translators, dictionaries,
  • Sending e-mails (in grades 4-5),
  • Recording study trips through an online portfolio.

Middle school students use school iPads as their primary device, continue to improve the communication, research, creative, basic computer skills they acquired in elementary school. There is also a greater emphasis on digital citizenship, which includes topics such as privacy and cybersecurity. Students use their devices throughout the year for the following purposes:

  • Creation and implementation of multimedia presentations,
  • Collecting scientific data, writing laboratory reports,
  • Practice Language Arts Skills, Mathematics,
  • Collaborative work on online projects,
  • Video creation, editing,
  • Conducting and participating in surveys,
  • Research of current and historical information,
  • Communicate with your teachers and other students.

As high school students approach life beyond TASIS, they must be prepared to meet the demands of a world saturated with technology and information.

High school students are required to bring their own computer devices. TASIS provides technological capabilities to support these students in developing a range of skills:

  • Effective, efficient research,
  • Multilingual communication,
  • Cooperation
  • Creativity, innovation,
  • Resourcefulness
  • Problem solving,
  • Digital citizenship.

Faculties and colleges

TASIS has three academic departments: elementary, middle, and senior. In addition, during the holidays, they are joined by a summer school offering short-term courses.

Things to know about

TASIS has a thorough approach to the issue of caring for the environment, works to promote environmental sustainability, minimize waste: 90% of organic waste from the kitchen is recycled, all disposable paper plates, cups, cutlery are made of recyclable and biodegradable materials.  Most of the products that are used in the preparation of the dishes are supplied by local farmers, which significantly reduces the level of damage from exhaust fumes (common when transported from afar).

International Baccalaureate is a Swiss-based universal school program with a curriculum that has made it possible to equate the education received by students in other countries with the national curriculum. Today IB Diploma (the equivalent of the certificate of secondary education) is recognized as the leading universities in the world.

The program has a number of features, one of which is the development of students' social adaptation skills regardless of their chosen specialization. The emphasis is on independent work. Students are taught to think critically and motivate to achieve. This style of teaching spurs interest in in-depth study of priority subjects. The program, aimed at developing self-confidence, is suitable for purposeful students.

As for academic preparation, students are offered a large selection of subjects. The study of science (methodology) and mathematics is obligatory. In total, to receive IB Diploma, it is enough to pass examinations in 6 subjects. Teaching of disciplines is conducted at the standard and advanced levels.

Advanced Placement, an additional student education program for enrolling in a higher school, helps students to choose in advance subjects for which they will be able to study at any university in the future. This program is recognized by 90% of US universities, and about half of them enroll graduates immediately on the second course.

The certificate of a secondary school in America is not equivalent to the diploma received in Europe, therefore surrender from three or more disciplines in TASIS is a direct enrollment in any university in Europe.

Review about TASIS The American School in Switzerland

Hope
(29.11.2022)
They sent a child here for a summer program. We got into the camp on the second attempt. We applied in February, but we were told that there were no more places! They put me on a waiting list, and in April the place appeared due to the fact that someone refused. The program was wonderful, a lot of sports and interesting activities. We visited many interesting places throughout Switzerland. The child especially liked the excursion to Zurich. We took a regular course in learning English, because we wanted a language camp, but in general there are many other options at school.

(21.11.2022)
In 2019, my son enrolled here to study in the 10th grade. We moved to Lugano a year earlier, so the school was known to us and we planned to enter here. For all the time of study, we were not disappointed at school. A really good level of training and support for children. They are well prepared for admission to universities, and the curator helps with the selection of a program not only in Switzerland, but also in other countries. You can apply to any number of universities, and they will help with this. The son decided to enter American and Canadian universities.

Hello, Do students have to live in the school? I’m thinking of sending my boy to your school but will only go for the day. Is the yearly cost different for those students who don’t live in the school? Thank you, Sasha

I want to say a huge thank you to the school management for being able to accept us from the middle of the year to the 11th grade program. Before that, I had the experience of studying at another American school in Switzerland, and we didn't like it there at all. The program was weak and the teachers were not professionals. We turned to the SMPAS for help in urgently transferring the child to another school. Manager Ilya suggested considering TASIS. Since most of the documents were already ready, the enrollment process was fast. Special thanks to our manager for his help with filling out the forms, there will be quite a lot of them. The teachers at TASIS are excellent and very attentive to foreign children. The child really came to life after a bad experience in the first school and feels comfortable here.

Very good school. Great location on a hill, from anywhere on campus the view is simply stunning! In addition to the American program, there is also IB, and you can finally choose the option of the training program immediately before moving to the 11th grade, it is not necessary to do this in high school. A very beautiful shape that children like.
