Starting work in 1916 as a school of oriental studies, after 22 years the school received university status, occupying a special position among world universities through a rare specialization in Asia, Africa and the Middle East. At the moment, SOAS has gathered the best teachers of orientalists and teaches students from 133 countries: at the same time, the university receives about 5,000 full-time students and more than 3,600 students in distance education. In addition to core knowledge, within the walls of the university there is a unique opportunity to start learning rare oriental languages from scratch. The high level of academic teaching was appreciated - in 2009, SOAS received the Royal Award and is consistently among the top 40 best educational institutions in England. The university is a member of several major academic associations in the country, including the Association of Commonwealth Universities, Universities UK, 1994 Group.
